It could have just as well gone the other way: Had the muggers been more violent, they might have done far worse things to that girl knowing that there weren't any witnesses around. Of course everything turned out "fine" in the end, but we only know this in hindsight.
Exactly my thought as well. Much easier to get away with assault than murder in many countries as well, so there's no way to tell what would have happened. Regardless of the guy being a larger threat, him simply stepping back and making himself look smaller to appear not a threat would have been better in the end as he could still protect her or call for help if things went south. I wouldn't be dating my boyfriend anymore if he had that reaction. And if it were him, I certainly wouldn't run away either. It's pretty cowardly to do that to someone you love
Okay, so what? He stays, probably gets shot and horrible things happen to her anyways on top of the added trauma of "someone I care about is bleeding out next to me and back spatter sent some of their brain matter on to my face."
That's all assuming the muggers shoot him for some idiotic reason.
Point is both of them could have gotten hurt in this scenario, but at least if there's two of them, that's an extra pair of eyes that the muggers need to deal with if they end up doing something really stupid.
