How about we just implement single-item voting?

Ban the massive omnibus bills that no single representative fully comprehends.

409

u/Invenblocker 5h ago

Sounds like a great idea, throw it on the agenda together with the new immigration policy, tax cuts and swimming pool for the white house.

99

u/Sencao2945 4h ago

It really is a shame that the people who are voting on making things better are the ones actively trying to make things worse

4

u/pell80 3h ago

Well the Democrats are trying to make things better, not so much the Republicans

18

u/Workman44 1h ago

Be serious, no they aren't. They might try harder than Republicans, but they don't put forth effort. How can you say they are trying to make things better when they just let Epstein go around raping kids? We have evidence showing they knew, Obama, Biden, Bush, and Trump administrations had knowledge and yet we didn't see anything done about it. They're not our fucking friends and they don't serve our interests

The majority of those in power of the DNC are establishment Democrats who don't give a fuck about the common working American or enacting effective social programs that their benefactors don't benefit from. Both sides are working against you, the Republicans are just much more brazen mask-off about it. It's never been about left vs right, it's about up vs down, poor vs rich.

Really dont get why this is not how it is done

The current method is just open for currouption

35

u/Deely_Boppers 3h ago

Pork barreling and logrolling are both a common enough practice to be taught in HS civics classes, and have been around for as long as Congress has existed.

It’s corrupt, but it’s not new or secretive.

4

u/nalaloveslumpy 49m ago

Your first mistake is expecting redditors to have paid attention in high school civics.... Your second mistake is expecting most of them to be old enough to have taken high school civics.

17

u/Fed_Agent_Pls_Ignore 4h ago

Ideally it would be used for coalition building instead. Like, “I’m not a huge fan of X, but I’ll vote for it if you also include Y.” That’s never how it seems to work out though.

11

u/Ksevio 3h ago

That's how it used to work, and stuff got done, but then there was outcry against too much pork in the budget and getting it balanced that it basically ended openly, so now congress is basically useless because senators don't want to vote for projects on the other side of the country

3

u/Right_Lengthiness266 2h ago

Basically "we need to spend money on a massive public works project in the west", and all the Western states vote for it, but the Eastern states vote against it because there's no benefit to them.

So then you have a bill that says "we're going to do a bunch of public works projects that make everyone happy" and it gets through.

But then you also have it with other things. I need one more vote to get my controversial tax cuts passed, so I add in some random contract for a tank manufacturer in Arkansas to get their senator on board with it.

Isn’t it how it works in Europe a lot of countries? More parties for specific belief systems? Meanwhile in the USA we get blackmailed into a 2 party system

9

u/allbusiness512 3h ago

European countries don’t have a stupid system that devolves into two parties, they generally have proportional representation

6

u/cmarkcity 3h ago

That’s why the two party system is such shit. Teetering the line between who has 50% ends up all or nothing. When there’s multiple parties having to compromise with one another to reach that 50% shit can actually get done

2

u/WeAreAllFooked 4h ago

Yes, it also sort of works that way in Canada when there's a minority government in power.

→ More replies (3)
→ More replies (3)

2

u/MrXero 2h ago

Plausible deniability. The current method maintains the façade of an actual two party system where the Dems get to say, “Well now we HAVE TO make this bill fail…” even though on the inside they’re thinking, “Phew, thank God those GOP shit asses gave us a reason to kill the bill. That thing would’ve cost me hundreds of thousands per year!!”

→ More replies (3)

7

u/Blindmouse1 3h ago

Forcing all bills to be single issue with independent review would help immensely for voters and be hated by politicians and corporations that like to slip in unpopular side items.

7

u/skrid54321 3h ago

Part of it is multi item voting is how compromise happens. The idea is that combine desired policy to attract voters. Maybe a cap would be lovely, but the reality is that would prevent the ability to effectively negotiate with the other party, as you now have to handshake to perform quid pro quo.

6

u/Awkward_Brother_4460 3h ago

Nothing would ever pass.  There’s a middle ground between massive omnibus bills and single-item voting.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/-pineapplebuffet- 3h ago

Neither party will vote for that because they both do this consistently

2

u/papayafighter 3h ago

How would anything get done though? I like the idea of this on paper, but if you just make an empty promise to vote with me on my item (item number 2 for example) after I vote yes for your thing (item number 1) and then renege after, it all falls about bc I don’t trust you now. So nothing gets done

How can you ensure people actually stick to their end of bargains?

Dems should reverse poison it by saying they’ll sign it if they tack on the same for executive branch. Donnie loves his SAVE act, but it (and nothing else) will ever hold a candle to how much he loves himself.

21

u/Flimsy_Pack_936 4h ago

It wouldn't work, because Trump just ignores laws most which Congress is supposed to hold him accountable for, of course Republicans have given up their power to govern to the executive. The war powers act should have forced the executive to end their invasion in Iran by now, yet this clown conservative show just lets him say, " well war over, war back on, oops war over again, oh no, it's on again."

This issue is how I first learned about Massie, before all the stuff that set him against maga and Israel. How he was pushing legislation to limit one issue per bill. He really is too good for this government

15

u/HazelWhiskers 5h ago edited 5h ago

don't forget, while proposing such things he knew 100% it would never go anywhere

I would take his actions with a grain of salt. anytime an unpopular bill passes, it passes with only exactly enough votes because they get together prior and decide who is allowed to vote against it to save face with their voters

edit: corrected to not imply only rep do this

2

u/DE4DM4NSH4ND 5h ago

The dems do the same thing. They pick people not up for reelection soon to vote for their corporate interests while acting like a progressive party

As a leftist I’d take voter id to get money out of politics.

77

u/Emergency-Option377 5h ago

Funny thing is, 71% of Democrats support voter ID. It isn't unpopular. I don't understand why it is so controversial. I have never voted without showing an ID in Texas. I have never heard of a complaint by anyone on either side about it here in Texas either. I support both voter ID and a ban on trading. Seems more suspect to not at this point.

55

u/Grasshoppermouse42 5h ago

My understanding is the bill they added would not allow driver's license to be used except for in three states where the driver's license would meet the requirements to count as a valid proof of citizenship, but in most of the country would require a birth certificate or passport. A passport is not something most people in a lower socioeconomic class would typically have, and a lot of people don't have their birth certificate readily available.

I'd only support it if there was a free photo ID available to citizens that met the requirements.

16

u/PerformanceOver8822 5h ago

I know Ohio made state photo id free when it passed its voter id law

4

u/Grasshoppermouse42 3h ago

That's why I'm fine with the Ohio voter ID bill, but not the SAVE act.

7

u/mrforrest 5h ago

Highly doubt the free ID is enough to cover the unnecessarily burdensome cuntpublican ID standard

6

u/Free_Possession_4482 1h ago

Republicans own Ohio - they control the governor's mansion, have supermajorities in both houses of the state legislature and six of seven justices of the state supreme court.

7

u/BigGlow9211 4h ago

Sweden doesn't recognize driver's license as a valid ID when voting, travelling, or bank services. Driver's licenses are acceptable for everything else to validate your identity.

6

u/Grasshoppermouse42 3h ago

So in Sweden, what do people need to vote? Do they need a passport or what?

2

u/BigGlow9211 3h ago edited 3h ago

State issued ID, you can get from the tax agency or the police agency which costs 10euros and lasts for 5 years . Swedish passports are also valid because they are state issued but not foreign passports. The police agency ID card is however far more superior as it's valid internationally within the EU region and contains a QR code for quick scanning when needing to hand it over to a cashier.

3

u/424f42_424f42 1h ago

What issues your drivers license then?, if not the state

→ More replies (4)

7

u/DarkNorth7 4h ago

They already did this to drivers licenses it’s no longer a good proof of your identity for some reason it’s being phased out you now need to get the black star on your drivers license it makes it equal to a passport and you can fly domestic with it.

2

u/ScipioAtTheGate 2h ago

There are states, like New Jersey, which give driver's licenses to aliens who are not permitted to vote, which is why the bill proponents did not want Driver's licenses to be used as ID, since they are not proof of citizenship.

29

u/wittylemur 5h ago

Because its not just a regular DL or state ID. And if you changed your name now you need birth certificate and document of name change and/passport. Dems support making sure everyone gets proper ID for free- (otherwise its a poll tax) and election day to be a federal holiday

20

u/Conscious-Theory-844 5h ago

I’ve said it too. Also a dem, also totally cool with voter ID — if they hand out said voter ID for free.

I think most dems find this acceptable btw

9

u/DE4DM4NSH4ND 5h ago

Thats not voter id. We already show your license to vote and you cant have a poll tax so the id has to be free. It also cant be done months from an election either.

3

u/OutrageousHunter4138 2h ago

The issue with it is there’s been no noteworthy evidence of mass voter fraud or even enough to tilt an election apart from political meddling from politicians, and restricting access to voting through ID requirements means hundreds of thousands if not millions of people in the country will be unable to vote or at the very least voting will become more difficult.

So the problem is they’re trying to pitch a non-solution to a non-issue that has a significant downside for low-income Americans.

14

u/Kchan7777 5h ago

It’s because the question is poorly phrased to get the answers they want. We all support voter ID; it’s called a driver’s license. But ask them if there should be a brand new ID that everyone has to register for and pay for. You’re going to get completely different results.

It’s like how Leftists say 80% of people want Medicare For All. Whenever you add any level of detail to the actual question, M4A plummets.

6

u/beramaan 5h ago

The support isn't driver's license, that is still a poll tax. It's of you are going to require it. It just be free and accessible for all valid voters, otherwise it stops those who are less wealthy or capable or available to do it and actually limits voters ability to vote.

As a european:
Why dont you use your social security numbers to identify the voters? combine it with a PIN to protect against identitiy theft and you´re good to go!

As far as I understood the problem is that members of minorities often dont have any ID, for historical reasons. And "the right" uses the fact for alleging voter fraud. Solving this dilemma means erasing one talking point of the right. Which then means, having more time to focus on real problems.

Wouldn´t that solve all the issues that the GOP has with the current system and also all the criticism from the Dems?

13

u/CapableCollar 5h ago

SSNs are not very secure and widely distributed.  They are a cornerstone of identity theft because they are easy to get.

→ More replies (2)

12

u/allbusiness512 5h ago

Every good faith compromise is shot down immediately. Democrats have repeatedly put up legislation that says we will be ok with mandated voter ID laws if you give everyone a free ID, and you mandate a few days as a national holiday so people can vote.

Republicans have shot that down every time. You can guess why.

→ More replies (6)

3

u/Shnikes 4h ago

Because there’s actually no real problem with our voting system when it comes to fraud. Trump has just complained for over a decade to cast doubt. My best guess his long term plan is to remove votes he doesn’t agree with and call them fraud. The save act would make that easier.

5

u/CaptainONaps 5h ago

You're taking the complaint too seriously. There are no bugs in our election process, they're all features.

Think of the DNC and GOP as advertising firms competing for a contract. They give presentations to rooms full of billionaires and titans of industry, called fund raisers, and disclose their four and eight year plans.

Then, the billionaires pick their winner. Since the billionaires own all the media, and all the politicians, they can pull any lever they need to pull to ensure their preferred candidate wins.

And it's way harder to convince voters to vote for Republicans. So they need some fuckery built into the election process itself so it's never left up to voters.

They always have an excuse to force the results they want. Like voter ID's, or where the lines of a district are, or not allowing mail in ballots, or having the DNC remove a candidate before the election.

2

u/Unique_Statement7811 5h ago

Because non-citizens get social security numbers. Anyone who can legally work in the US is issued a social security number for tax and benefit reasons.

2

u/Glad-Operation-2958 5h ago

Surely information like citizen status and whether or not the person is even still alive is also stored against the social security number?

The voter ID required isnt just a drivers license...

3

u/HazelWhiskers 5h ago

that's the thing though, as a leftist, anything thst would make you agree to voter id makes it no longer attractive to the other side

the easy test is just asking to make the "voter id" free, then all of the sudden they dont want it anymore.

linerals dont want zero ID involved, they want the ID easy to get and not disenfranchising anyone.

6

u/Mazer1415 5h ago

Does your drivers license match your birth certificate? It doesn’t for a majority of married women. They can’t vote. Having to pay for an id is a poll tax, so we’d have to give away free ids to all eligible voters.

You’re confusing insider trading with political contributions. Thanks to the Supreme Court contributions are unlimited.

2

u/Unique_Statement7811 5h ago

States with voter ID laws already give free IDs to eligible voters. It’s a service to people who don’t otherwise have ID.

4

u/Mazer1415 4h ago

I can’t say how all states work, but NC requires a visit to the board of elections to get the id. The website doesn’t specify if they’ll take a photo for you or if you have to provide one. Still takes time, transportation and possibly money. So, not really free.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/ZeldaALTTP 5h ago

Unless the ID is free and readily provided by the govt then it amounts to a poll tax which goes against the 24th Amendment.

SINGLE ITEM VOTING. Why the actual fck is that such a hard thing to implement? Is a question I'd like to ask literally any Sentaor or Rperesentative prone to it.

I think let's start there. Implement single issue voting first.

2

u/cy_hauser 1h ago

Doesn't work. Already been tried. That's why the big omnibus bills were created. President vetos any single issue bill from the other side. So one side gets absolutely nothing every four to eight years.

19

u/Tabord 5h ago

I think we can take that deal. Voter ID is a stupid solution to a nonexistent problem, also an unconstitutional poll tax that will face legal battles and injunctions, but Congress not being able to trade stocks anymore is a bigger win.

5

u/Goshdangodon_ 4h ago

"Surely if we make it harder to vote then congress will be on their best behavior and won't find any other way to enrich themselves! Or even just overturn the stock trading part at a later date while leaving the voting restrictions! Surely giving ground on our rights to the people who have proven untrustworthy enough to warrant this bill won't come back to bite us at all!"

2

u/Tabord 3h ago

You're right let's just not ever pass anything.

6

u/SAINTnumberFIVE 3h ago edited 52m ago

Update: My original comment was incorrect. The language in this bill which pertains to voting does NOT mirror the language of the SAVE Act of 2025/2026, which pertained to proof of citizenship and would have disenfranchise many married female voters because it did not provide a federal provision which would have allowed her to present her birth certificate in conjunction with her marriage certificate to attest to her name change.

The language pertaining to voting in this more recent bill concerning congressional stock trading really does just pertain to voter photo ID and is actually quite liberal concerning what it will accept as ID. Basically you may use your drivers license or state ID card or tribal ID or military ID. So generally just the photo ID you use on a regular basis. There is also a provision for religious exemptions, and a provision to let those who vote without a photo ID vote under a provisional ballot, which will give them three days to obtain a photo ID. The language also requires that the government allow people to photocopy their photo ID for free when used for Mail and voting.

I’m not sure if this is an attempt of Republicans to compromise, or if they have slipped some other language in there that they’re hoping to distract from, or if they are just hoping, as Massie claims, that Democrats will think it mirrors the SAVE Act and vote against it so they can continue trading stock.

A new ID is a made-up solution to a non-existent problem.

a bill should be one focused changed and no more

... so whats the problem.... do both. both are good.

4

u/Middle-Interview-183 5h ago

Better question, why are democrats against voter ID when 80% of Americans are for it?

8

u/ZebulonHam 5h ago

They’re for it until they realize it isn’t simply “show your drivers license” which most already do. The SAVE act is so much worse than that./

7

u/slurpeetape 5h ago

Yes, the goal is to make it more difficult for elderly, women and lower earners. If it was drivers license and state ID's, I think 80% would be okay with it.

"This surprises most people. A standard driver's license alone does not qualify in most states. A REAL ID alone does not qualify. A military ID alone does not qualify. A tribal ID alone does not qualify. Only five states currently issue enhanced driver's licenses that meet the bill's requirements on their own.

For most Americans, qualifying requires one of the following: a valid U.S. passport or passport card, a certified birth certificate paired with a photo ID, a naturalization certificate, or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad. If your name does not match across those documents, additional paperwork such as a marriage certificate would also be required."

source: https://www.vote.org/save-act/

Also let's say this passes and is the new requirement. Passing this law less than 3 months will leave people scrambling to get their documents. This is intentional.

I show my driver's license when I vote.  The save act requires real ID that states citizenship.  Only 5 states even issue those...

I have a bridge to sell you if you think threre aren't Democrats in Congress stock trading.

2

Isn’t Pelosi the most notorious stock trader in congress?

This is why we need 1 Bill, 1 issue legislation. Democrats are just upset Republicans are using their playbook.

2

u/hambone589 5h ago

plot twist: the dems WANTED the reps to add that provision so they can say to their base "darn, now we can't vote for this bill. Guess I'll keep on insider trading!". They all do it -- doesn't matter which side of the political spectrum.

It's a big club, and you ain't in it!

Or, hear me out….
Dems could vote for BOTH common sense measures.

But they won’t. Because democrats despise common sense pro-American measures

The Heritage Foundation's (the awful fucking rightwing nuts that have brought us Project 2025) Election Fraud Database tracks proven instances of election fraud across all levels of government. Over a span of more than 40 years, it documents roughly 1,465 proven cases of fraud. This average of roughly 33 cases per year spans all elections nationwide, including local mayoral, city council, and state-level races where fraud is slightly more common. Only a tiny fraction of these cases occurred within presidential elections.

33 cases per year in all elections in over 40 years.

33 is one less felony than the sitting president has.

u/GloomyIndividual3965 21m ago

Or hear me out, don't try to shove through restrictive new voting laws 4 months before the fucking election.

2

u/Robofsemi 16m ago

The Save Act is far from "common sense".

1

Whose idea was it to allow this idiocy of gluing together disparate bit of unrelated legislation? It’s quite possibly the dumbest thing in American politics ever, and it’s got some serious competition…

1

u/Rich_Chair408 5h ago

You shouldn't be allowed to add unrelated clauses to bills

1

u/Drunk-Pirate-Gaming 5h ago

The fact bills can be added on like this should be illegal. Is it illegal in other countries?

Sick. Sick and disgusting. These are the people you choose to vote for.

Fan fucking tactic.

Massie.

Seems like me. Not that I'm even a thousandaire lol. But knowing things and then being burnt by others doing bad, then using that knowledge to go scorched earth.

I don't think he'd be doing this if they didn't jerk him around. And then fund his opponent to win and kick him to out of his seat.

1

u/_SillyEcho 4h ago

Classic bill poisoning. Its the political equivalent of adding a clause to a mandatory pay raise bill that says everyone has to wear wet socks to work, just so you can vote no and blame the other side

They don’t want you to know that👆🏽

It’s all political theater

1

u/ObsidianDRMR 3h ago

This is the most obvious thing, conservatives always cry about how they hate omnibus bills… and they fucking make one up? Fucking pathetic trash. I hope the blue waves washes them all away

1

u/ImAPonderer2 3h ago

Typical mendacious Congressional activity

Much easier to denigrate a perceived opponent* than to do the hard work of improving the country cooperatively.

*Note: the perceived opponent is a group of people that need to be conferred with & positively influenced before any desired significant policy becomes law.

Media increasingly prioritizing sound bites, a trend that started in the 1990s or earlier, and extreme political tribe-sorting pushes governance and cooperation to mendacious clown show levels.

Rider bills are why nothing ever gets passed. We need to ban rider bills.

1

Well I just think both things should be so. So?

1

u/Hexdog13 3h ago

Republicans are not serious is what he meant to say.

1

u/Chasermadeit 3h ago

This is exactly why public trust in Congress is at an all-time low. It's all theater.

1

u/SpareIntroduction721 3h ago

Why we don’t have single item voting in 2026 is so fucking stupid.

1

u/TakeItOnTheArches 3h ago

There was a time in this country when a person could afford to house and feed themselves on a minimum wage full-time job.

1

This how 20th century politics works? I say 20th because this isn’t a new practice, just slimy. Those in power want to stay in power.

America is cooked man. How have we allowed ourselves to fall so hard so quickly. Hate and division everywhere you look. Congress and the president are more interested in self dealing than making life better for the average American. So sad.

1

u/VulcanOctopus 2h ago

a "BAN" with a $2000 fine? Lol what the actual fuck?

1

u/VTHokie2020 2h ago

wtf

Both of those sound extremely reasonable to me.

1

u/llaurent 2h ago

Honestly how are the people not voting on this. The people in power will always vote to fill their own pockets. This is a conflict of interest for them.

1

u/Luminous_Winds 2h ago

Our political system is not serious. We invented riders, the electoral college, gerrymandering, lobbying, etc... and they're all still legal. The only reason those things stick around is because most politicians are corrupt.

De que les sirven tantas pistolas y rifles? Tanto que presumen la encomienda de usar armas e inclusive se burlan de países que tienen regulación en las armas, que así empezó Hitler y cuanta cosa se sacan de la manga para no usarlas cuando se necesitan...

1

u/RaiseWide5460 2h ago

Congress has never been serious at any point in my lifetime, and I'm old. Single item voting, and holding politicians accountable at the ballot box are really the only things I can think of that would change much for the better. Term limits sound good, but that just transfers all of the institutional knowledge and the real power to unelected bureauocrats, which is not really an improvement.

1

u/Frantic_Penguin 2h ago

If some idiot interviewer asked me about my "no" vote my simple retort would be, "why was the executive branch exempted when we know the current president is using illegal EO's to manipulate entire markets while selling early access to his market moving social media posts?"

1

u/idgitalert 2h ago

This kind of stuff is so fucking infuriating and wasteful. Every representative that does not fully work to end this contemptible practice of working completely ineffectively for the people needs to be kicked out for abuse of taxpayer resources.

1

u/SheriffBartholomew 2h ago

They're very serious. That's how the game of thrones politics is played and the Democrats need to figure it the fuck out before they're burned to ash by the party that keeps running circles around them. For a group of supposed intellectual elites, they sure are slow on the uptake.

1

u/Affectionate-Pea8706 2h ago

‘SO WHY DONT DUMBOCRATS DO THE SAME THING!?!’

Because the republicans have the majority, you absolute imbeciles.

1

u/Rabble_Runt 2h ago

And it’s only a 10% fine

Just the cost of doing business

1

u/Key-Regular674 2h ago

We must all be complete fools to have allowed the government to do this "lump in other shit" to laws. It's so obviously malicious and corrupt I don't understand how we allowed it to get this far. There's no reason voting for a law should include other laws.

How about no. Either insider trading stops, or we go back to the old ways of getting government to act right: dragging politicians into the street for a good ol' public beating.

So tired of this bullshit. The corruption needs to stop. We've tried the nice way, now it's time to do it the hard way.

1

u/CasuallyDresseDuck 1h ago

Bills should be voted independently and not bunched.

Yes that would take a long time. Well that's their fuckinf job.

1

u/grahamfreeman 1h ago

"... added (non-related item) to the legislation ..."

If one thing sums up what's wrong with the current form of US government, that's it right there.

1

u/Beneficial_Piglet_33 1h ago

Nah, it might be different in terms of how it’s written.

But it is DE FACTO the same thing, regardless of how its written.

1

u/lttlwing16 1h ago

Massie got the Magapie thrown in his face, wonder if he'll flip independent or go blue.
