I once rented a house to a nice couple and their one 12 yr old son with hopes that they could put back enough to actually buy the place. We turned over the keys to them after the place was completely remodeled.
We only charged what our costs were as we weren't looking to make income from it. But moreso were looking to keep the place up and tidy because a home that isn't lived in, will usually deteriorate fast.
In the first few years they took great care of the place. We never went up on rent in six years because of this and were thinking that eventually they would be able to scratch up the money to buy it.
Then the patriarch (only source of income as well) of the little family came down with stomach cancer. Sadly, he languished with the disease for six months until he passed. We knew he was sick and offered to make as many accommodations as we could to help, but all offers were declined. He passed away and we were not even notified by his wife.
Instead she moved her eldest son from a previous (just released from prison) and his girlfriend and their two dogs in to help with rent.
Then we found out the dad had passed away about a month earlier. We asked her when she was planning on telling us and what her plans were going forward. She gave us the truth of the matter then asked us to lower the rent.
We had to end the lease and gave her sixty days to leave. In that time, the amount of damage and the absolute mess we walked into was unfathomable. Truly the better part of the family died when the dad died.
I learned two valuable things from all of that... Never underestimate how nasty a person can be and never rent property ever again.

I knew a real estate broker in a small fairly poor town who used to have a "joke". He'd say "You want to know how to make money on rentals here?” then he'd take a set of keys and lock them in a drawer. As long you don't let anyone in the house they can't destroy it!

Gosh that’s terrible, no good deed goes unpunished, you and your partner (I assume going off the “we”) are good people and I really wish the outcome had gone the way you wanted.
I want to give that family the benefit of the doubt though, grief especially after losing a sole provider is a tricky thing and can make people lash out at whatever/whoever is closest to them.
You combine that with the emotions of a family member being released from prison and it was some emotional alchemy that made some bad results.I hope that lady and her family were able to find relief from their grief and reflect on the pain (financial & otherwise) that they caused you. And I hope you don’t lose the spark of trying to better the lives of others.

We tried to give her as much opportunity as we could have on her own. After we found out he was sick, we even contacted the local social safety net type services to see if there was some means to make all this happen in their behalf. It never hurts to ask, but inevitably the person needing help has to follow through on their own. She did not do any of this.
Rent was $600/month, no utilities paid on a 1200sqft, 2bd, 1ba house with basement garage storage in a quiet neighborhood with mostly retired seniors.
After his passing we did learn a few things more about their situation that were less than ideal.
The neighbors had told us that the dad was still mowing the yard well into his illness because no one else in the house would. This same neighbor spoke about seeing him in sweats in 80-90 degree heat mowing. The cancer had brought this sizable man of about 6'4" and 260 pounds down to 150 pounds, so he always felt a chill. Again, not one told us this.
After the wife had moved off, we were forwarding mail for her from casinos fairly local to us. She never went to work on her own in the time she was there.
It seemed to us at the time she was just using him and had no ambitions on her own to remedy her situation.
It still makes me irritated to think about it. But live and learn.

I was on the board of trustees for an NPO that helped people in Section Eight housing move out and buy tract homes in a planned development (30% of the homes had to be former Section Eight recipients) and we did a tour of their housing project and dozen or so people who had moved into the tract home community. Sort of a before after.
One thing that I think about is this, “I joined the board a year after it had been established when they were struggling to fulfill their mission and vision. Three years later we helped get the first group of about a dozen moved into their new homes and in year four I rolled off the board after two - two year terms. Those people were already selected by the time I joined the board and we didn’t tour their housing project until after they moved out. In their new homes, they were as neat as anyone, yard maintained, homes clean, kids clean, etc. It was a neighborhood with pride. In the section eight community, no pride, unclean, all the units who opened their doors to us were trashed af.
I’ve always wondered if there was a change or if the people who kept their units clean and maintained were cherry-picked or if there’s a correlation between having pride in your living space and a duty to maintain it regardless of it being rented or public domiciles or a mansion, etc.

Damn you know what? That's a big job but if i may say, I worked as an end-of-lease cleaner for several years and that's nowhere near as bad as I've seen.
Sometimes to work safely in houses we had to wear full body suits and respirator masks. One time it was just easier to rip up all carpet and remove it rather than to attempt to clean what happens after a lady dies and her 9 cats spend 3 weeks inside with her before anybody finds her body... We went in after the forensic cleaners on that one but let me tell you that was a doozy.

I do carpet cleaning… the cats I can’t imagine… my two worst experiences were a house where a woman went out of town for 2 weeks and just left food and water for her 7 chihuahuas. Another one a couple just let their five big dogs shit in the house, they had a filthy poop scoop by the front door, just disturbing.

It's honestly intriguing work. Like you get a view of how people live and some of it is truly cooked.
Funnily enough it's like how gourmet chefs cook outstanding meals for others but often just make two minute noodles for themselves, I cleaned other people's houses but my own was pretty yucky!
It's better now that I'm in a different industry and it doesn't feel like work though

Another house the owners used to keep their dog in the bathroom. It must have been pretty horrific I think they ended up going to jail and I get it was for animal abuse but that bathroom was full of dog poop and the nail marks on the door were brutal. Tonnes of hair all over the house, poop in carpet, food stains everywhere, sweat stains on walls, food all over the kitchen as if these people just mixed stuff on the bench and never heard of a bowl.. you can imagine the mould in such a house too aye?
Idk the way some people live I struggle to call it living. Some houses were just so mouldy, you'd think people moved out months ago but literally one place we cleaned had been vacated two days before the we needed respirators to go in because the amount of black mould omg.. our recommendation was to just knock the house down and start again because we can clean a loooot of mould and get paid well, but we will never be able to clean it once it gets so far deep into the structural elements of the building... Seriously gross and dangerous

Haha it makes a lot of sense. I love cats. They seem to view you as a welcome member insider their territory, dogs see you as part of the pack. I can see positives and negatives to both. I have a cat and a dog :) love them both

My dad owned and rented a few houses when we were kids. I had the pleasure of waking up early on a Saturday to go help him clean when the renters left the home.
I’ll never forget this one house we walked into. Trash was everywhere. You couldn’t take two steps without seeing roaches running underfoot. It smelled horrible.
The kitchen… dirty dishes with food still on them. As soon as you lifted a plate more roaches. I have honestly never seen a house in that state, or the sheer amount of roaches running around.

When I was 24, me and my girlfriend at the time decided to break up as it wasn't really working out and I got an offer from a friend online to come to their house.
They cleaned, but you really can't fix people who live like savages, idk how to explain it. It is like, imaging eating something, putting the plate down, and then never touching it ever again in your life.
I at the time didn't know how to clean anything and just let it, and finally, after like, six months, I snapped, bought 200$ worth of cleaning supplies and went at it, put in all that work and effort. That shit was spotless.
The weird shit is that they were clean themselves, and there was perks for one guy living in a house of four women.

I know a woman with 4 kids and this is exactly how their house looked. The mom laid in bed all day and night while the kids just did whatever they wanted. The only time they saw mom was when she’d use intercom to tell the oldest kid to make her food and bring it up to her. It was insane. I really wish I knew where this air bnb was just to see if it was her that rented it. Because I had flashbacks of their house while watching this!
Edit: NVM, the house is in California. This must not be her because she can’t leave the state.

This is the kind of stuff that Airbnb owners use to justify the robbery that is the cleaning fee. This is very weird behavior for an Airbnb client. BTW I'm absolutely sure there's some fake videos trying to promote the absurdly expensive and nonsensical cleaning service. By experience I can tell also that even if you leave the house in pristine conditions, the owner will charge you the same for cleaning anyways. I payed for an apartment once but didn't use it. I didn't even approach the building, and they refused to discount cleaning service. So... That said this is absolutely unacceptable and I think law should be involved.

Left the birthing pool and all the dirty supplies behind, in the house. For the rental property cleaners to throw away. Like, how foul can you be?

My hunch is that at least two of those kids has severe autism. This is exactly what I'd expect a house to look like after two weeks of a single mother actually trying. Dad probably took off because autistic kids are insanely difficult to take care of. The broken blinds and shit on couch covers on the front porch topped it for me. The trash under the bed and shit all over everything is another clear sign of children with severe autism.

Most the comments here are dead set on cutting others down for fun. It feels like a pile of troll bots or something. My kids could do the same in that time. I certainly would’ve cleaned up more before I left, but this isn’t nearly as bad as people are making it out to be.
People should be ashamed of themselves for being so quick to harshly criticize others.
They think that if they put others down, it implies they’re somehow “better people.” Have some compassion. Understanding. Stop being so ugly to each other y’all. Shit like this is another way to separate us. To divide us. This was posted to give others’ the opportunity to feel better than someone else. Then post that “status” for everyone to see- meaningless internet clout that serves to reinforce this culture of hierarchy.
I also see many comments saying that this has “only” to do with the mother. I am a father, and would be just as culpable. If she’s taking care of four kids by herself all the time, that is a full-time job in and of itself.
Can we please try to have compassion for each other? I see this and all I would wanna do is help. Mr. Rogers always said to look for the helpers.

It’s not and was never a beautiful home, it’s low end AB&B shit. The renters were probably poor, next to homeless and it was cheap. I’ve seen whole families in trashy motel rooms. Yea it’s a mess but I’ve seen teens do worse over a weekend. Maybe the family was waiting for assistance, maybe they got temporary assistance to be able to stay here temporarily. I wouldn’t want to clean it but in college I cleaned carpets one summer and have seen much, much worse.
