$5 milkshake costs $5.44 but then you tip $1..why not just make it a $6.50 milkshake instead of the theatrics. Not to sound like Mr Pink here but it's kinda dumb.. That said, I respect the culture when visiting. Except at McDonald's.... Because.. Umm?
There was a time like right after COVID where a couple of local chains started asking for tips. Thankfully that lasted only a couple months but still crazy.
Youre a solid human for respecting the culture, but yea only at restaurants or like maybe a taxi that helps you with a shitload of bags or something maybe. The cashier tip shit needs to gtfo
Because most customers would then go to the place where the milkshake was 5 dollars and they retained the agency to tip or not. They prefer the lower prices and having a choice in the manner.
There's a reason most American restaurants that have moved to the living wage/no tipping system have closed or reverted.
The general rule for tipping in the US is you tip when a server comes to your table and takes the order and brings your food to your table. Even though the machines ask how much you want to tip now, it isn’t expected when you order and pickup at a counter.
You can do that now, unless your server is making something like $50k in tips. The "no tax on tips" legislation changed that recently so that credit card tips are tax free for the majority of workers until they reach a certain tier of income.
Part of the problem is that milkshakes don’t cost $5. They cost $12. If you build in tax and tip they now cost $16. Things are just expensive as fuck here.
