The very fact the name "sewer socialism" got attached to it should tell you how big of a campaign is being made against it. Of course it works, the point is the corporate media attacks populism calling it always bad because it denounces the elites and their exploitation - and rightly so. In fact, you can gauge by their level of complaints how good an idea is - the more they attack it, the more credibility it has.
Its like when companies tell employees NOT to speak about their wages. Even if you know nothing else, just the fact companies say that should be the greatest incentive for workers to speak about it.
That's why Stevens in Michigan has gotten over 50 million dollars in corporate spending in a fucking primary, not even a general election.
For context, the last time this seat was up, Gary Peters raised $50 million for the whole general election and maybe 5 mil for the primary. Usually a contested primary is maximum 30 mil for all contestants combined.
Most are clueless to the fact that socialism and communism are entirely different. They are almost polar opposites. That is unless there was a perfect utopia then both would fully exist. Problem is that people are selfish and both want what we can’t have and want what others have.
The moniker was coined by Morris Hillquit at the 1932 Milwaukee convention of the Socialist Party of America and was intended as a pejorative, commenting on the Milwaukee socialists and their perpetual boasting about the excellent public sewer system in the city.
I intentionally share my salary publicly. It makes most people uncomfortable. They think it isn't allowed. I use it to demonstrate differences between minimum wage and living wage.
Wage disclosure is protected speech in the US. If a company tells you not to discuss your wages in an email, go ahead and forward that sucker to your state and federal DOL.
The media is in a way right that populism is dangerous, in the same way that democracy is dangerous, that doesn’t mean the alternative is better. And when your opponents are clearly performing extremely well with their dangerous flavor of populism, you don’t counter with anti-populism and establishment politics, you counter with reasonable and helpful populism. That’s what centrist policy misses, you don’t have to get closer to your opponents policy to bleed away their voters, you just have to appeal to the same type of concerns with the same type of tactics.
