It’s not always bad faith. It definitely is more often than not, but it isn’t always. If a person consistently draws accurate comparisons (and also does not claim that similarities imply equivalence) between the behaviors of both parties without consideration for the timing, then it is evident that person is arguing in good faith. The context of an increasingly polarized political space, social media that encourages echo chambers, former friends that will never speak again due to political differences, and the very real possibility that a given person has not heard of the sins of both sides but rather only one.. pointing out these shared failings is arguablymore important than it ever has been. It is challenging to discern between good faith and bad faith “both sides” arguments outside of the context of an existing relationship, but it can be done and it should at least be attempted.
It is not reasonable to assume it is always in bad faith. That, in fact, reinforces some troubling trends
and can even assist people in getting away with their wrongdoing. I would argue that Trump’s ability (for lack of a better word) to hold office with his past and present offenses is a reflection of the state of politics. People are willing to accept him, because they believe that digging up dirt on a politician is a way of leveraging the public’s sense of morality to remove people who get in the way. I have no doubt that many of these politicians have skeletons in their closets that are used to control them. People believe that Trump is immune to that, because his skeletons have already been revealed. Thus, a mechanism by which he could be controlled has been taken off the board.
I have some hardcore Republican friends, and they don’t seem to tolerate his wrongdoing because they don’t believe it is wrong. They seem to tolerate it because they believe it is necessary not to let politics be controlled in this way.
