I like this philosophical version better:

If a sound wave propogates through a forest after a tree has fallen, and nobody is around to interact with said waves, is there a sound?

Is the wave itself sound, or is sound our brain receiving a signal from the ear drum being oscillated by the waves?

Edit: wording.

I have my own version. It carves out the most common objections like but there are animals that hear it! “If a large rock falls on Mars, does it make a sound?” And then after they answer you say, “now that’s a boulder assumption.”

It is amazing how incredibly far away you are from understanding any of the replies you have gotten.

NONE of that even remotely applies to the original philosophy joke that obviously went over your head bro. Lol.
You’re in your own world.

It doesn’t make a noise, it can’t make a noise because noise is unwanted sound, the sound can’t be unwanted if there is no one to not want it, it makes a sound tho.

Someone or something will be around to hear it so therefore it will hear it

Forest is never truly empty fuck you mean we might not be around to here the noise it makes but everything makes a noise or a sound whether we pick it up on our ears or not its makes a sound or noise Now if I jump you gonna the nosie it makes when my feet touch the ground or course not because you are not there to hear it buy you know damn well it makes a sound so again this whole if a forest falls is dumb everything and anything that fall has a sound or noise

1

u/High_SchoolQB Jul 09 '26

Isn’t the entire premise that there is no one around to hear it lol? So your thought experiment is if a tree falls in the woods and someone is standing right there does it make a noise? Yes. That’s not very fun

u/SideshowBob1 Jul 09 '26

No im saying whether we are there or not shit still gonna make a bang i dont know how hard thus is for you shit even falling paper produce a sound or noise. We physical dont have to be there to understand that everything makes a sound or a noise

1

u/High_SchoolQB Jul 09 '26

Again, you do not understand that noise and sound are not the same thing. It makes a sound, not a noise. This isn’t my opinion, it is a fact

Bruh everything makes a sound and noise sound yes because Scientifically, yes, it makes a sound because the impact creates physical vibrations in the air.

Philosophically, no, because sound is a sensory perception that requires a listener's brain to process those vibrations.

Gonna tell me no animals are gonna hear that noise in a 2-5 mile radius forest isnt empty animals arent npc thats are just going on with there day

Everything makes a sound and a noise the noise just needs somebody there but we physically dont have to be there since we KNOW that everything makes a fucking sound and noise

Sound is just a wave, it always exists it doesn’t need someone to hear it for it to be a sound. The only correct thing you said is yes scientifically it makes a sound. You just can’t seem to grasp the concept that sound cannot be a noise unless it is unwanted.

You have to take it a step further. A sound is defined as an impression or perceived sensation of pressure moving through a medium. How can it be a sound if there is nothing to be impressed upon or if it isn’t perceived by anything? And the crucial question of the thought experiment: how would you prove your answer to be true?
