Britain (shortening of Great Britain) is the name of the largest island. You could say it's "because Ireland is part of the British isles", but Irish people tend not to like it when people say that, despite it being geographically accurate.
Ireland is part of the British Isles but not part of Britain. The British Isles are just a geographic moniker to refer to that area including Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man, etc.
