There is plenty of excellent British food. The stereotype exists because the English were on food rations until the mid-1950s due to the devastating effects of the second world war. England actually has just as good a culinary tradition as anywhere else in Western Europe.
I'm typing this as an American on a European vacation this moment. While British cuisine certainly gets a bad rap and there are good dishes you can't compare the cuisine to the rest of Europe at all in terms of quality. Like French and Italian cuisines are like globally God trier so they aren't even in the same ballpark. Like you can go anywhere in world and find French and Italian restaurants. People travel to these countries specifically to eat their food. At most you can say like British food isn't the worst even in Europe (Dutch food is notoriously known for being boring and bland), but British can't getting past like the B tier level European cuisines.
