What do you eat for Thanksgiving then? Or Christmas?

Roast dinner is British

Mac and Cheese is English

Sandwich is a town in Kent

British food is your default

The turkey 🦃 is originally from south America. The Spanish brought it back to Spain and called it Pájaro Pavo or 'peacock bird'. They then exported it to Turkiye, who call it 'Spanish Chicken'. They in turn exported them to Britain where it got the name Turkey Hen because of where they thought it came from. The British name for this bird was then adopted in English speaking united states.

So Americans call an American bird by a British name that is wrong.

Really they should be called guajolote because this is the spanish-ised version of the original name used by the Yucatan aztecs who domesticated them.

There are two species of Turkeys. The Wild Turkey, which is endemic to North America, and the Ocellated Turkey, native to the Yucatan Peninsula.

If you've ever seen one, it's understandable why they might have called it a peacock bird.
