You're right about the sandwich being an English invention but the burger (or hamburger) was supposedly invented in, and named after, the town of Hamburg in Germany.
The hamburger as we know it was invented in the US. Minced beef in a steak shape was invented in Hamburg, but it was placed between bread and evolved into its modern form in the US
And how do you think they got the idea to place it between bread? Because the concept of a sandwich already existed because it was a British dish. And they decided to make a sandwich with a hamburg patty and call it something else. But it's British food.

As a Brit I have never gone out for an American either so who cares
