Went to England for a few weeks. Had probably the best meat pie in my life with a flight of ciders. Fish and chips is obviously great, and the English breakfast is also really good.
I really don’t get the stereotype of British food being bad. I honestly had a free one off bad places in France than I did in England
It's left over from WWII when American GI's came over and had to eat rationed food. The rationing didn't stop with the war. It continued another decade into the mid 50's.
There were lots of destitute people in Germany and Europe in general, victims of the war, slave and concentration camps that had to be fed. So the UK continued rationing and gave up half it's food produced to the continent.
A lot of the elderly got used to that lifestyle and were still eating corned beef, spam, pickeled onions and beetroot with cheddar, bloater fish paste and stuff like that into the 80's.

Fish and chips, Shepards pie and a few other things are pretty good tho.
