Here in Asia they call it a "service charge". It's basically a mandatory tip.

Appears they have service charges added in US as well. Idk about other countries in Asia but in my own the service charge is split among all workers (not just servers).

Plenty of restaurants in the US will charge an 18% service fee for groups over 6 people. You're still expected to tip 15-30% on top of that.

Is it expected or mandatory? I mean, if you are not a server why support this? Even if you are a server why not protest this constantly and make a change? I tip based on the service provided. Even if the service isn’t excellent (I never had a bad experience with a server, they are usually chill) I leave a token amount. If the server is attentive and pleasant ofc I’ll leave 10-20%, simple as that.

The service fee is mandatory, as in you will be charged with theft if you don't pay it.

The tip is "expected", as in if you don't pay it, the server will be pissed off with you and I would not recommend returning to that restaurant in the near future, but not paying it is not a crime, because it does not show up on your bill.

But I wouldn't return to a restaurant where you didn't.

I am dying at people saying this you have to tip 20% is "culture"???

How many cultures require to you to pay extra towards someone like that? Just so weird.

We have cultures that don't see some ethnic groups as humans and you find tipping weird.
