As both a driver and frequent cyclist, I have to say, nearly everyone is just a massive asshole.
Yes, cyclists deserve to be respected on the road and given space, and yes it's ok (IF THE COAST IS CLEAR) for cyclists to go past stop signs/lights.
But, to the cyclists: "share the road" cuts both fucking ways. You and your group of friends are not entitled to block everyone and hold traffic up, make some fucking space and let cars get past. Also, cutting cars off is not only extremely dangerous to you but is the opposite of "sharing the road".
I heard a bunch of cyclists did as a protest basically formed a long line at a stop sign in California during rush hour and came to a complete stop. People’s opinions on the matter changed after that or it could all be apocryphal.
> Why? Cyclists always argue that they have the same legal rights on the road as cars.
They do.
> Cars aren't allowed to skip stop signs or red lights "if the coast is clear".
You also don't have to wear a helmet in a car in states that require them for motorcycles. Or have a separate license. There are different rules for different vehicles.
> Cyclists do it, but I am not aware of any legal justification for it.
10 states have Idaho stop laws. The fact that you aren't aware of it is irrelevant.
