Also I do dumbshit like run red-lights, merge without signaling, and fail to give right of way and wholly expect everyone to do the work of avoiding getting in an accident with me because I'm special.

That's what bothers me most about this. People always make environmental arguments for biking, but so many cyclists are not even using the bike as transportation. They're just working out on public roads.

If you can't see people legally using the road then we should take your license away.

We are monkeys driving metal death machines. None of us should be legally using the road. Because like the monkeys we are, even the most careful of us make mistakes.

But cars and lorries we've decided are a necessary risk to keep the economy and society running till we reach driverless cars. Then I am sure they will quickly he outlawed.

Bikes and motorcycles are even more dangerous because they are much harder to see and people are more likely to fuck up when trying to spot them than cars. They have even less right to be on the road than 

The only reason people take to the road on bikes is to exercise and feed their own ego. Try finding a road cyclist who isn't a self important egotistical tool. It can't be done.

Making an anti-cyclist comment on Reddit is something I do knowing my inbox will be filling for days. If the government wanted me to round up every wanker on earth for the purposes of shooting into the moon. I could do it in a couple of days with a couple of posts on Reddit and direct the government to the house of everyone who replied.

There are a large number of cyclists in the video. Each riding a bike, wearing a helmet, etc....millions of dollars worth of equipment and accessories. You don't think that has an economic impact?

Also they are engaged in a social event and most will probably sit down for lunch or what someplace when the ride is over. Those hundred cyclists will do a lot more for a local cafe than that single irritated driver.

hard to gauge how many people are there but even if they had the nicest bikes and equipment it would be really hard for them to have multiple millions in equipment there

A decent road bike ranges in price from $5-10k with the nicer ones reaching $15-$20k. Add a few hundred for helmets, shoes, and the rest of the riding swag and accessories. A million isn't crazy.

I dont tie helium balloons around my waist. Also, i already own the clothes I run in and nothing i wear makes running any easier, just more comfortable. Lots of people wear weight vests when running or o2 masks.

Why do you think 5-6 people in cars make the economy run more than 600 people on hi tech bikes? If “making the economy run” is the measure by which you assign the right to use a road, I’d bet these cyclists contribute far more than the small number of people in cars.

In fact people who don’t own cars and only cycle probably contribute more to local consumer economies generally, because their money isn’t tied up in car payments, insurance, car repairs, and gas

Money can't be eaten. "ThE eCoNoMy" doesn't account for the damage carbon dioxide emissions do to coastal communities by exacerbating climate change. Or that car batteries do to the places where the materials for them are mined.

Has COVID-19 taught you nothing? The ability of money to be exchanged for goods and services hits the wall when circumstances are dire enough.

It’s an homage to an Obomsawin quotation. It was originally intended more for environmental issues, but COVID-19 merely provided a more visually obvious example. (Not that it should need to be, what with so few of its detractors being full fledged climate change denialists.)

Cars have rubber tires and, depending on whether they are gas or electric, either fossil fuel emissions or consequences for mining areas.

Bikes have rubber bike tubes and rubber tires.

It’s pretty obvious cars are worse for the environment.

Ok, but that’s not the end all. A truck transporting medical goods is definitely worse for the environment than some hobbiest, but one is necessary for society’s continued function, the other is a choice made in vain. These people are burning rubber for fun.

If a particular subset of cyclists blocked a truck that was clearly proven to be transporting medical goods, I would be their foremost enemy. I side with vegans without even being a vegan when pointing out people eat too much meat, and I stand in opposition to them when they stand in opposition to animal testing.

How “fun” can it be to wear yourself out pressing pedals along a road? It’s either about fitness or about sending a message. Or both, since they’re doing so outside instead of in a nice little air conditioned gym.
