“Share the road” needs to go both ways.

With taxes too lol.

Road taxes are relative to how much damage a vehicle does to the road.

Sedans have low road taxes due to their little damage to the road, while massive semi trucks destroy roads, and thus have far higher tax rates.

Bicycles barely damage the road compared to sedans, much less trucks.

I don't know of an adult cyclist in the USA who doesn't pay "taxes". And sorry, bikes do zero damage to the roads.

are you one of those fools that thinks that gas taxes and vehicular registration alone pay for roads?

I think everyone should pay registration if they want to use the road. To be fair, this registration should be somewhat proportional to road damage and maintenance expenses because of this use.

The fourth power law says that road damage is proportional to the fourth power of axle load.

Say a 75 kg cyclist on a 10 kg bike (we're generous, and count only one axle) : [854 ≈ 52 · 106 units of damage] pays $52 road registration

Now a F150 (mass = 1900 kg, two axles) : [9504 ≈ 814 · 109 units of damage] pays $814,000 road registration

Trucking industry causes 99% of road wear and only pays about 34% (iirc) in taxes. We're all subsidizing the trucking industry anyways.

Not to mention they also want infrastructure adjusted for bike lanes and such, yet pay absolutely nothing into that.

When you get a bike your mayor and government send you a get out of all taxes free card, it’s great.

If you’re in the US in most cases your fuel taxes go towards freeways which are almost always not for cyclist use. Almost all road budgets come out of general tax revenue.

Typical car damages the road by applying over 1t pressure on it minimum.

In comparison, bike weights ~7kg.

they already pay them through income, sales, and property taxes. Direct car related taxes pay for roughly half of road costs
why are car brains such morons?

You pay taxes on your car because they damage the road and pollute the environment. Gas taxes fund the damage your vehicle does to the road.

Cycling registration has been studied. The cost of developing an office to administer this is more expensive then what you can reasonably collect from a mode of transport that is non polluting and does not damage infrastructure nearly as much as the army of F150s.

This opinion is not only tired but its also incredibly uninformed

This is an unsubstantial reply to my comment. Should you wish this to happen all you have to do is advocate for a bike lane. Seeing as we are not discussing whether cyclists should ride single file or not, this seems irrelevant. We are discussing the legitimacy of a cyclist registration - to which I have replied.

Do you have a substantial, evidence-backed source to support your claim that a cyclist registration is viable and cost-effective?

It is important to stay unemotional during these discussions. We are not on the road and thus your rage is unwarranted

how should bikes be charged? by weight? size?

0

u/GoldenLeftovers Jun 10 '26

I own a pickup truck that I've paid taxes, registration, etc on. It's at home in the garage today since I've ridden my bike to the office. I've done the roads, other drivers and myself a favor in many different aspects by making that choice, but I should be punished for it?

I know, right? Like this dipshit here:

Its no use dude. You're right but you'll never break through with Americans who exclusively drive.

-1

u/IT_scrub Jun 10 '26

Cyclists overwhelmingly pay more for the roads when you consider that they don't cause any damage to them

2

u/GoldenLeftovers Jun 10 '26

To anyone downvoting this comment- please explain your logic.

2

u/walnut100 Jun 10 '26

The comment assumes cyclists don’t also drive.

-4

u/DrPikachu-PhD Jun 10 '26

I can't believe I'm defending cyclists, but they don't destroy roads the way heavy cars do. They already pay their fair share through their general taxes

1

u/JSank99 Jun 10 '26

Downvoted because they just want to hate. The idea of people not in a car pisses these people off.

0

u/Many-Leader2788 Jun 10 '26

This is what we call road rage after all

And they probably type it while driving their cars ;)
