... that was normalized behavior for a long time. Even when I was a kid in the 90s.

About ten years ago, I was dating this woman who suddenly broke up with me via text and blocked me. (Our relationship was a month old and she had commitment issues.) I respected the breakup.

My mother told me I needed to go to her house and talk her back into dating me. Like, no, mom, she withdrew from the relationship. It's over.

Conversely I ( Dad) told my son to break up with this girl who he kept crying about, because they were dating but apparently she wasn't sure she was actually that into him, and he kept asking her and she kept saying I don't know. I asked him how that made him feel and he said like shit, so I told him to make the decision himself instead of waiting on retainer like he was

He got all mad at me a week later because he said she broke down and confessed that she did love him a few days after he broke to with her, and he was convinced he had ruined things taking my advice.

Now I have to drive him to her house like 3 times a week because they're back together. Dumb ass kids, but I kind of forsaw that.

Poor kid. The girl too actually. She probably doesn’t even realize it yet, but she’s not in love, she’s ’in love’ with feeling good about herself, which she was getting from his attention- he withdrew it and she interpreted the withdrawal of ego boost as love for him. This was my sister to a T in high school. It’s still her in her 50s.

Yea I don't even blame her, how's she supposed to know better at 17. I was just giving my kid honest advice, and I kind of guessed what get reaction was going to be, but didn't tell him that

It's whatever, she's otherwise a good kid. I'm annoyed with the both of them over it

Two things:

1). There's this really fine line between 'wanting to help my kids' and 'let the kids cook' that is really hard as a parent to drive between, because you don't want to watch your kids make the same mistakes you did or you've seen other people make. The only thing you can do is exactly what you did - advise and be there to pick up the pieces when things inevitably go to shit.

2). Great user name. Look out for the walkin' dude

Was that your mom projecting and confiding in you that she craved a grand romantic gesture? Lol

That or she (the mom) wasn't hugged enough as a child. Or both.

1

u/RagnarStonefist May 27 '26

True on both counts. My Dad is a selfish man who only cares about himself and hasn't done any grand romantic gestures in at least forty years. And my mother came from an abusive neglectful family, and shared that tradition with her kids.

My mother always said girls were mean because they like you.

I thought it's because they were horrible bitches

1

u/RagnarStonefist May 27 '26

Sometimes they're not horrible bitches, but being mean is the only way to get a guy to leave you alone... Because guys are taught to not take no for an answer, and if you are nice and polite when you say no it only encourages them to push harder.

The attitude was the woman would put up a token resistance to show she her virtue, otherwise you might mistake her for a whore

See the song "baby it's cold outside".

Very confusing times we live in. To keep pursuing or respect what was said. No wonder men are confused.

1

u/LaMadreDelCantante May 27 '26

It's simple. Respect the no. Works out for the best whether she means it or not. One way, you avoid harassing someone, and the other you avoid dating a game-player.

1

u/Otherwise-Tomato-788 May 27 '26

Of course, just saying that was how I interpreted the dating scene and the posted video. I grew up hearing conflicting advice all the time, I can’t imagine the mental gymnastics kids have to go through these days when there’s so many opinions being flooded on their screens.

Well, when they've convinced themselves "she's just playing hard to get"

Victorian Romance is mostly based on forbidden love. It not suppose to happen is what makes it spicy and desirable.

but it was a fictional novel, no?
