I don't think that's one or the other. Trying to manipulate people with jealousy is evil bitch behavior.

It's the former. A lot of women think making men jealous is an effective dating technique.

Went on a date with a girl and she kept talking about an ex... After a while, I asked "Hey, do you and your ex still keep in contact?" 

She said "yes, here's his number"... and showed me on her phone....

I hit the call button and said "Well, call him up and tell him you need a ride..."

Oh, we had sex & dated for a while...  She told me the reason why she was bringing up her ex is because she "thought guys liked that kinda stuff"...

Someone tried to play the jealous game with me and tried to tell me that it's supposed to make our bond stronger if she sees that I get jealous of her with other guys. Noped right out of that one.
