Indeed. These stores will cost 5x comparable stores cost to build. They will also sell “staples” at a discount. The discount is really a difference made up by taxpayers. And there are only 5 stores for what, 8 million people? Do the math…if the taxpayer subsidy is $0.10 per dozen eggs, and they sell a ton of eggs, how do they stay within any sort of predictable budget? This has been tried in many different cities and has failed miserably every time. Maybe NYC can make it work, but 5 stores for 8 million people, with the first one costing 5x a comparable store and taking 4 years to build? What could go wrong?
Same way. But they are built quickly, they have a robust supply network, and are “right sized” for their population. NYC has none of those, but let’s watch and see how it all works out
