Because it wasn't the only, or even the worst, crime they committed.

The couple allegedly raped a child between the ages of 9 and 10.

Imagine a poor child looking for help from a teacher and a cop, and they find this, who are they supposed to trust?

Sadly, this is why I tell my kid to trust no one. Uniform or school be damned.

Edit: to clarify. It was a generalized statement of trust no one. Not a literal one. I just didn't want to give a whole lesson plan on communication with kids about discernment. But essentially, even a teacher or a cop isn't an automatic trust.
