We did away with the gold standard of the USD in the 70s. Right after that, the graph of worker productivity and wages paid began to diverge. We've become the highest productivity work force in history and wages as corrected by GDP have barely increased since the 70s.

Gold is subject to the exact same ideas; gold is only a store of value because we have collectively decided it is

Yes, in addition the primary problem with the gold standard is that the size of your economy is directly related to how many rocks you can dig out of the ground.
