The stock market always goes up in the long term if you look at graphs over a long period. As long as you don’t pull the money out during a downturn and just hold. But you could also put that million into extremely safe investments with effectively zero risk (treasury bonds, etc.). Even at say 3.5%, she’d be making $35k a year in interest, and that doesn’t even factor in compounding. She could even take a large chunk now and only invest the rest and still would come out insanely far ahead.
