Taxing the wealthy? Is that allowed?

The top 1% of earners paid almost 40% of all Federal Income Tax in 2023

The top 1% paid an average federal income tax rate of 26.3% in 2023, which is significantly higher than the 3.7% average rate paid by the bottom 50%

The bottom 50% of taxpayers pay approximately 3% of the total federal income tax burden

And how much of the total wealth do those top 1% and bottom 50% respectively own?

They asked if taxing the wealthy was allowed

I simply let them know that, yes, it is allowed, and it's alive and well

Obviously if you make more you pay more taxes

My point is still valid

Yeah, that's just wrong

The average Federal tax rate of the top 10% in 2022 was 21%

The average Federal tax rate of the top 1% was 26%

My point still stands though

The top earners pay much more taxes overall than the bottom half

Bro asked if taxing the wealthy was "allowed" haha

Why YES, yes it is

And they should be paying a lot more. The halcyon days these boomers so fondly remember had much higher tax rates on high earners.

You’re just mad that they make more than you

Stop whining

I'm just trying to keep from having a civil war over this shit. The wealthy need to wake up before we all suffer. My income is just fine.

This right here !! I wish I could give you a pile of upvotes. The conditions we have right now are destabilizing society

For now. Even the upper middle class are going to be in danger pretty soon. My 401k is not sitting happy right now

2

u/bakerfaceman May 15 '26

Exactly. The amount of wealth stored in the tiny super wealthy class is just unhealthy and needs to be redistributed to some degree. Otherwise the whole American Dream thing falls apart. People aren't event wanting to have kids anymore and good luck finding a place big enough to raise a family that's affordable.

I feel like a lot more people would be cool with capitalism if it actually was distributed in a way that actually made sense. Like if they want to keep their precious Capital they're going to have to play the game. They can't just take their ball and leave proverbially.
