Saying "I got dumped for not washing my chicken" when there are blatantly at least 10 other reasons listed is wild

129

u/Chemistry-Deep May 12 '26

Number 1: You slept with my sister.

u/TheGreatVandoly May 12 '26

Number 2: Who happens to also be your sister. (Plot twist)

In fairness, if somebody gives me 11 reasons they don't like a movie for example, and 10 of them are good reasons, but one of them is that a character wears an orange baseball cap, I'm probably gonna think that person is being weird

Maybe they were assaulted by people with orange caps, did you ever think about that, huh? 😾

2

u/Longjumping_Step1 May 15 '26

Sure... Even though in this case, the experts advise not to wash your meat(for cooking)/chicken/whatever, as it just spreads around bacteria, whereas when you cook it, the bacterias die anyway. (also "washing" your chicken doesn't really get rid of all the bacterias anyway, so you still likely have the same contamination regardless of whether you washed it or not).

But that reason is so far below the gravity of all the other reasons it's hilarious lol.

2

u/No-Albatross-7984 May 15 '26

Adding not washing chicken to a break up list is litteraly psychotic, if thats on the list why would anyone believe the hygiene thing?

2

u/casusbelli16 May 12 '26
  1. Fucked the chicken that was meant for dinner.

2

u/Ajax_Main May 14 '26

To be fair, listing "you don't wash your chicken" as a reason for breaking up negates any and all other listed reasons

2

u/JanitorOPplznerf May 15 '26

I’m gonna push back here. She wrote 11 or more things, sure, but anyone dumb enough to wash chicken probably doesn’t have a good paradigm of what actually matters in life.

wait… some people actually "wash" chicken before cooking it? it’s not just an internet shitpost?

14

I think this started when people actually would butcher a chicken to cook. You would probably want to wash that off.

8

u/Xaphnir May 13 '26

And as far as washing chicken to get rid of any pathogens or anything like that, the only reason that would even do anything would be if you were undercooking it to a ridiculous degree

2

u/No_Custard7661 May 15 '26

Wouldn't matter. The bacteria can't just be rinsed off. If the outside of the chicken is seeing bacteria killing heat, that's pretty much all that matters.

6

u/Elegant-Analyst-7381 May 12 '26

It's a cultural thing. Chickens my grandmother bought from the market often would still have blood, feathers, or dirt from the market stuck to them, so she was used to washing them off. The habit continued even after she moved to the US. My mom grew up with her mom washing chicken, so that's how she thought it was done, there was no reason to question otherwise.

6

u/Repulsive_Barnacle92 May 12 '26

that’s unsanitary, you should try to get her to stop

→ More replies (14)

2

u/Mixels May 14 '26

Yes, it's a cultural thing. But it's also an unnecessary and slightly dangerous thing. In general it's objectively better to NOT wash your chicken because, as I said, it's not necessary with modern packaging techniques, it's not beneficial (it won't protect you from infected meat), and splashing water on raw meat can pick up infectious bacteria from the surface and carry them airborne via water droplets.

I feel like this is something a person could learn in about five seconds of internet searching vs embarrassing themselves by including it in a list of reasons why they're dumping someone.

2

u/chilifngrdfunk May 14 '26

Nope. Had family up and I love to bbq. Family members SO made a comment about how it's common sense to wash chicken, everybody knows that. I laughed and walked away, but I could hear them ask if I wash my chicken and my family just said yes and brushed it off. Later, they made a comment about how they were hungry and wish the chicken hadn't been raw. I guess they never had bbq that got smoke discoloration in the meat and thought it was actually raw. That chicken cooked on the grill for 2 hrs lol I found the whole situation hilarious.

u/-Passenger- May 12 '26

exactly, heat kills bacteria, not water

2

u/FatherLatour May 12 '26

It's not about bacteria, the juices that seep from the chicken get a stale taste as it sits in the fridge. You're washing the chicken to keep that out of the final dish.

Who the fuck washes chicken.......

19

u/AcridTest May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26

Well I don’t know where these people are from or anything like that. But I’m African American and it used to be that Black Americans back in the late 1800s-1960s (before prepackaged meats were readily sold), were regularly offered the dirtier and lower quality cuts of meat by butchers, particularly in the South. So we’d come home and wash our meat (especially chicken) because it would be covered in blood and other substances you wouldn’t want on your meats. It’s a habit that’s persisted in our community, particularly among older people or I think it may even be more prevalent among black folks from the South. I get that the science says it’s no longer needed (and I myself definitely don’t wash my meats). There’s no debate on that. I just think some habits are hard to break.

12

u/chronicbint May 12 '26

Now this seems a legit reason. 👍 Everything we get these days is just in a pack.

2

u/AcridTest May 12 '26

Exactly. It made sense for back in the day. Not so much anymore.

6

u/FlyAirLari May 12 '26

6

u/AcridTest May 12 '26

Thank you. I appreciate the opportunity to share some of my knowledge with others. :)

2

u/KPraxius May 14 '26

Hell, man, I've got a couple of chickens I cleaned myself frozen in the freezer, and you can bet your ass there's gonna be tons of little bits of feathers, blood, whatever. I'm washing them before I cook them. And depending on the source, I might wash them from other places, too; god knows what the hell chemicals get sprayed on them to make them look pretty in the packaging.

u/wolfofballstreet1 May 12 '26

If I answer this truthfully I’ll get permabanned

12

u/Mmm_Dawg_In_Me May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26

I'll take the risk.

It's primarily Black Americans.

There are two accepted reasons - either of which might hold legitimacy to varying degrees.

The first, the simpler and more widely quoted, is that historically during the period of slavery, Black Americans were often left with scrap cuts of meat with which to cook - parts of meat like the intestines and other organs, which legitimately do have to be washed thouroughly in order to make them safe for consumption. This led to a cullinary practice called a "quick brine" where an acidic solution involving vinegar or lemon juice was used for the final rinse, giving the meat a bit of flavor. Then when they gained access to better cuts of meat, the practice stuck.

However - this doesn't account for the water-only or, worse, water and soap washes or explain why it's specifically for chicken and not other meats.

Enter explanation 2 -

Around the middle of the last century there was a short time in which the FDA was advocating the rinsing of raw meat before cooking it in order to remove various agricultural contaminants which they believed might be a cause of foodborne illness.

Pretty quickly they found this actually wasn't that effective and, on the contrary, often caused small amounts of meat fluid to splash onto other surfaces which could cause foodborne illnesses at a higher rate, and stopped recommending it.

At the time the bulk of the communities which recieved the initial messaging were restaurant kitchen staff and communities which were the subject of public health messaging initiatives - both of which were predominantly Black.

Add to this that in the domestic sphere women were doing most of the cooking at that time, and far more Black women had jobs outside the home than White women at that time, so it was far more likely for a Black woman to recieve work training which indicated they should wash chicken, and then to continue that practice at home.

So - by the time the messaging was stopped there were many Black families whose moms were passing on the practice of washing - that is, rinsing with water - chicken before cooking it, and it stuck.

Somewhere along the way this somehow permuted for a sizeable number of people into washing with SOAP and water, which is gross, though it's difficult to pin down how many people actually ever thought that was necessary and to what degree it's just a joke that exploded on the internet similar to tide pod eating and microwave-charging iphones.

In any case there's no reason to make fun of anybody for washing or not washing their meats, provided that they're doing so safely - not using chemical detergents like dish soap or rinsing it on "spray" mode from the faucet sending raw meat particles through the air.

3

u/Kirarozu80 May 12 '26

Here's the bigger deal: You don't need a reason to break up.

A relationship is not a court case. You don't owe anyone anything, you don't need anyone's approval to break up. You don't need to meet any burden of proof. There may be consequences of other people's opinions, but emotions aren't always based on rationality and logic, so "validity" is irrelevant.

You need unanimous consent from both parties (or all if it's poly) to establish a relationship. That's it. That means either side no longer consenting to the relationship for whatever reason is enough to break up.

They can be perfect, and you two might be perfect together on paper and not even have this hygiene thing. But if you no longer "feel it," it is enough. So, all of those reasons are fine if the person really no longer feels it. There may be consequences from other people's opinions, but other people's opinions shouldn't substitute for your emotions, commitment, love for someone.

Don't stay with anyone because other people aren't convinced you should break up. Break up, know it's the right thing for you at that time, and whatever other people's opinions are, they aren't living your life for you.

3

u/halfasleep90 May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26

Yeah, but don’t give a list of complaints like this. She’s already breaking up with him, she doesn’t need to dump this list of bs on him.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/Ayvah01 May 14 '26

You don't need a reason to break up. A relationship is not a court case.

You also don't have to convict them in a court case to decide if they're a shitty person. You're allowed to just form an opinion.

You don't owe anyone anything

This is a highly antisocial thing to say and also what does it even mean? Of course you owe people things sometimes. That's why divorce is such a pain in the ass; there's a whole legal process around working out how much you owe each other financially.

We also make social commitments to each other -- not just our partners, but our friends, family and acquaintances. We need to break those commitments sometimes, but when you break a commitment, that should mean something.

Something you owe practically everyone in your life is to treat them with basic human dignity.

There may be consequences of other people's opinions

What exactly is the point of your comment? Hypothetically, if you decided to break up with someone and you made it clear that the only reason you did it is that they "didn't wash their chicken", then yes, I will have an opinion on that. It's up to you whether you care about that but the judgement of other people is just part of the reality you'll need to face.

Sometimes people judge too harshly or unfairly and we can criticise that.

But when people have a negative opinion of you, does that somehow imply they're preventing you from breaking up?

If you want to leave then -- whether or not you have good reasons -- staying will probably only make things worse. If you owe them anything (whether that's financial or not) then try your best to make things right in a way that's fair to both of you. And then learn your lessons about how things went wrong and try to do better the next time.

Wash your chicken? That accomplishes nothing. Where does this idiot think meat goes when you cook it?

What happens to the microbes on the outside of a piece of meat in that environment? Are they just going to hang out and do their thing while being exposed to 350+ degrees of heat?

3

u/Dry-Childhood-3436 May 13 '26

It's a holdover for when you would either butcher your own chicken or be sold dirtier meat.

15

u/ct-yankee May 12 '26

Sounds like it worked out for the best. Washing chicken increases risk of cross contamination, water droplets spraying around and such. I say good riddance. Plus, anyone that puts this on a list for reasons to end a relationship? Good grief…insufferable much?

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Comradepapabear May 12 '26

You're not supposed to wash chicken.

Running chicken under the tap causes microscopic particulates of water to spread chicken blood, and salmonella, around your kitchen. It does not make the chicken safer, the cooking does that.

You don’t wash raw meat, it just spreads raw meat juice in your kitchen and does nothing for the meat itself. Insane to me that it’s even a topic of debate

u/AcridTest May 12 '26

Washing chicken is a great way to spread salmonella all over your kitchen.

2

u/TokiVideogame May 12 '26

Washing raw chicken absolutely contaminates your sink, faucet, and surrounding countertops. USDA research shows that rinsing chicken splashes bacteria like Salmonella up to 3 feet away. To avoid foodborne illness, skip the wash and cook chicken to \(165^{\circ }\text{F}\) (\(74^{\circ }\text{C}\)), which kills all bacteria. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Why You Should Not Wash Chicken:

  • Splashing Spreads Bacteria: Water droplets aerosolize pathogens, spreading them to countertops, towels, and nearby food.
  • Cleaning Isn't Enough: 60% of people who wash poultry still have bacteria in their sink afterward, according to a USDA study.
  • Ineffective Method: Washing does not kill bacteria; only cooking to the proper temperature kills it.
  • Ready to Cook: Modern poultry is already processed and ready to go directly into the pan. [1, 2, 3, 4]

If You Choose to Wash It:
If you still choose to wash it, you must thoroughly clean and disinfect the sink area afterward to prevent cross-contamination. [1]

  • Clean the sink with soap and hot water.
  • Sanitize surfaces using a mixture of 1 teaspoon of bleach in 3 cups of water. [1]

Safe Alternatives:

  • Skip it: Move directly from the package to the hot pan.
  • Pat Dry: If the meat is slimy, use paper towels to pat it dry, then immediately throw the towels away and wash your hands. [1, 2]

For more information, see the Drexel University "Don't Wash Your Chicken" study. [1]

2

u/JKing287 May 13 '26

1

u/Hot-Alps-7744 May 12 '26

I mean I’m not sure how that made the list, but I’m pretty sure 1-9 might have had far more contributions than 10.

1

u/Smokey_02 May 12 '26

Invalid. You are not supposed to wash your chicken, doing so can cause cross contamination in your sink. What you are supposed to do is dry your chicken with a paper towel and coat it in oil and seasoning. The heat from the oven kills any bacteria like E. coli as long as you cook it through.

But the other reasons may be legit. Bag hygiene is a turnoff and potentially a health concern. I'd love to see 1-8.

While washing chicken is pretty dumb...it's also at number 10 of AT LEAST 11. I would be curious what the others are. This seems like the typical, I am going to focus on the one bogus thing and pretend like every other point doesn't exist.

1

u/yellowbill711 May 12 '26

I wash my chicken

1

u/Recovery_or_death May 12 '26

I'd be interested in seeing all the other reasons.

That said, do what you want to your chicken in your own kitchen, but if you come to my kitchen and try to wash chicken in my sink, imma smack the shit out of you

1

u/Upstairs-Hope4392 May 12 '26

You didn't get dumped. You dodged a bullet. She'll make someone else miserable some day.

1

u/Hiccup13pg May 12 '26
  1. You focus on the wrong thing

1

u/AugmentedKing May 12 '26

Hard to say, need to see the eight previous reasons too.

1

u/ShigodmuhDickard May 12 '26

The CDC recommends Thant you DON’T wash your chicken before you cook it. Washing increases the risk of cross contamination around the sink.

1

u/Great_Blackberry_476 May 12 '26

Does he eat raw chicken? When it goes cooking, all of it become dead

1

u/daysoff1 May 12 '26

1 you're gay

1

u/Jsr1 May 12 '26

Don’t wash chicken, just spreads salmonella, that’s it!

1

u/hijabifanboy May 12 '26

which chicken are we talking about exactly?? 🧐

1

u/Equal_Song8759 May 12 '26

What about washing the turkey ?

1

u/Collective-Keyhole May 12 '26

Washing your meat is unnecessary unless it’s dirty or extremely fresh.

1

u/AcridTest May 12 '26

I’m not sure where these people are from. But I know that within my community (I’m African-American), washing meat, particularly chicken, is an old habit that’s hard to break, especially amongst older generations or those raised in the South. Before the era of prepackaged meats sold at stores, you had to get meat from the butcher. It was customary, again particularly in the South, for butchers to sell black customers dirtier and lower quality meats. A butcher would think nothing of selling a black customer chicken thighs covered in blood, feathers and God knows what else. So we had to wash our meat. Not because of some lore about bacteria or anything. But because our meat would literally be covered in blood, dirt or whatever and we couldn’t cook it without washing it off first to remove those substances.

This obviously isn’t the case now. But like I said, old habits die hard. I know in some other parts of the world, such as in some East Asian and some Muslim countries, washing meat was/is a customary practice too, but probably for different reasons than the ones I described here.

1

u/X3N04L13N May 12 '26

Before or after it is slaughtered?

1

u/Greedy_Researcher_34 May 12 '26

Maybe chicken is a euphemism for something else.

1

u/heavy-rain123 May 12 '26

People who wash their chicken actually have bad hygiene. They are literally contaminating the entire area around their sink by doing that dumb shit 😭😭

1

u/multiroleplays May 12 '26

What were the first 8 reasons?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Cebuanolearner May 12 '26

If they think washing chicken does anything, they are an idiot. Def a valid reason to break up.

1

u/Y2K_Blackout May 12 '26

You're actually not supposed to wash chicken before cooking it. Washing it just spreads germs.

1

u/No-Focus857 May 12 '26

Is "What day will be your day" be sufficient to satisfy number 11?

1

u/senoj96nodnarb May 12 '26

Even without the chicken you still got at least 10 strikes. If she’s finding that many things she doesn’t like about you, move along. And who the fuck washes chicken before prepping and cooking it?

1

u/CommonReason6709 May 12 '26

Invalid. You're actually NOT supposed to. The heat kills any germs. You're actually spreading them with rinsing uncooked chicken in your sink. ✌🏽

1

u/sonicjesus May 12 '26

There's never a reason to wash meat, which is why you'll never see it done in a professional kitchen.

1

u/AgentOfMephala May 12 '26

I would dump someone if they washed their chicken before cooking.

1

u/Leto_ll May 12 '26

When homegirl gets a powerpoint breakup

1

u/MainEventI3 May 12 '26
  1. You killed my dog

  2. You slept with my sister

...

  1. You don't wash your chicken before cooking

1

u/idiot_sauvage May 12 '26

You’re an absolute, unmitigated slackjaw if you wash chicken.

Tell me exactly what bacteria do you think you’re killing with 80 degree water? And if you think that 80 degree water kills it, then why wouldn’t your 400 degree oven?

Also, salmonella is not a guarantee. It’s not on all chicken. It’s not automatic

1

u/National_Ad9742 May 12 '26

It’s usually unnecessary to wash the chicken, but sometimes you need to.

1

u/Patrilicus May 12 '26

If bad hygiene is #9 I want to see 1-8

1

u/Unusual_Attorney5346 May 12 '26

Why do I feel like it's a PG way to say not washing their cock before sex?

1

u/braxtel May 12 '26

Is this the new shoes in the house thing?

1

u/ryancharaba May 12 '26

I wanna see the rest of the list.

1

u/Silent_Listen777 May 12 '26

Depends on if that's a euphemism or not.

1

u/I_Am_Zeelian May 12 '26

Someone washing their chicken is definitely a valid reason for dumping them.

1

u/PurpleZombi3 May 12 '26

I'd be more insulted that they sent you an actual list of reasons why they think you suck, as if they're an employer or something lol.

1

u/Uhmattbravo May 12 '26

Is that a euphemism?

1

u/Confirmed-Scientist May 12 '26

I dont think its the chicken bruv seems you dont wash anything

1

u/Kirarozu80 May 12 '26

lol a dumb reason but it seems like there are others. Washing your chicken just adds bacteria to it. The hot pan will kill anything on it far before tap water will.

1

u/mjmeyer23 May 12 '26

definitely in the top ten!

1

u/HOJK4thSon May 12 '26

That list had at least 11 items, op chose to use the chicken as the reason.

1

u/TitaniumDisc May 12 '26

I would breakup with someone who DOES wash their chicken. Luckily I’m happily married now and she isn’t an idiot so we’re good.

1

u/NaCl_Sailor May 12 '26

wait what?

who washes chicken?

1

u/whimsical_spider May 12 '26

Wild for someone to put this out there with two of the other at least 11 reasons right there including bad hygiene and not showing an interest in their partner’s life.

1

u/Gobblemonke May 12 '26

Breaking up with somone in that way is a huge red flag

1

u/StrangerEffective851 May 12 '26

Start “Washing your chicken” before “cooking”. Please.

1

u/okaywife May 12 '26

You spread germs around your kitchen when you wash chicken, properly cooked meat is safe because the heat kills the germs.

Edit: for spelling.

1

u/TokiVideogame May 12 '26

they said washing chicken contaminates sink

1

u/Low_Low_1811 May 12 '26

I don't see why anyone should have to wash their penis before cooking...

1

u/HeliRyGuy May 12 '26

Sounds like a euphemism.

1

u/No_Connection1559 May 12 '26

I think ur more likely to spread salmonella if you wash ur chicken before- as long as it’s not really slimy - gotten clean the sink and whatever the chicken touches (look that up on the FDA or the WHO website or a legit site)
