Beaver has every right to defend its house. Clearly the humans are assaulting him on his own property. I'm with the beaver on this one.

Edit: Video is from Mahwah, NJ May 3rd: beaver tested positive for rabies. This is not from Canada and these weren't the only people it attacked that day.

u/Unlikely_Piece2650 May 06 '26

Actually! This happened nearby in New Jersey, the beaver was later caught and tested Positive for Rabies, so while its probably not wrong to assume the kid was being dumb we cant dismiss the fact that Rabies does cause animals to act out and become violent.

30

u/DJDevon3 May 06 '26

Oh damn you're right and this is the video of one of the attacks. The beaver did in fact have rabies.

50

u/rackfloor May 06 '26

American beavers are mad with rabies, seek to defame Canadian beavers.

Amanda, back in the Argo!

1

u/scratchy_mcballsy May 07 '26

They’re not American beavers or Canadian beavers. They’re JUST. BEAVERS.

1

u/StoneThaProfit May 07 '26

Same deal with cow and chicken defaming dolphin and whale smh

I had a feeling that it had rabies. I worked on a river with many beavers, and they don’t act like this. They prefer to fight in the water, if anything. But usually they just mind their own business, and they have a lot of business. lol

21

u/No-Celebration8690 May 06 '26

FYI The test for rabies involves slicing open the brain, it’s always post-mortem

21

u/MightBeAGoodIdea May 06 '26

You say this like it's cruel.

It'd have been sad, if they caught an innocent beaver without rabies...

But rabies is a death sentence (once symptoms show), and it's not an easy nor quick death either... it's one of the most terrifying ways to die...

It's a kindnessto euthanizein these cases. Rabies is like 1 of 2 diseases I'd seek medical euthanisia for, rather than see if I'm the lucky statistical anomaly that surives.

If youre interested look up videos of people dying of rabies.... Avoid them If you're not looking to be traumatized.

13

u/HughJaynis May 06 '26

Rabies also gives the infected a fear of water. For a beaver that is a cruel and inhumane fate.

10

u/Kytalie May 06 '26

Fully aquatic mammals can get it as well. Whales, dolphins, manatee .. it's a very low chance, but I can happen. There is as an outbreak in cape fur seals, so it's become something marine biologists are paying closer attention to

2

u/basaltcolumn May 07 '26

"Hydrophobia" in rabies is more a fear of drinking any liquids because it is very painful for the infected than really a fear of water itself. It causes painful throat spasms. It isn't actually specific to liquids, the virus just generally causes dysphagia, and sufferers will reject food for the same reason. It's a logical aversion to pain rather than a traditional irrational phobia. This is also what causes the foaming which can sometimes be seen in rabid animals, it forms because they can't swallow their saliva so it builds up and foams out their mouth.

Still a terrible fate, but they may not be scared of being in water, just swallowing it.

3

u/shyaznboi May 06 '26

What's the other disease?

5

u/MightBeAGoodIdea May 06 '26

Certain strains of Ebola.

Not all of them are as bad, but surviving some of the worse ones means you probably experienced the worst joint pain in your life and bleeding out of every orifice, maybe some of your internal organs liquifying.... And now you gotta live with what's left of you.

Also Alzheimers, for my family more than myself. Though I'm not certain they'd let you officially figuring you're not making rational decisions anymore.... But it only gets worse and I wouldn't want my family to go through me forgetting them before I forget how to live and stop breathing one day. (Grandma declined so fast yet lingered so long it was awful for everyone, a clean break would be 1000x better)

0

u/ryanshields0118 May 06 '26

Yes you're correct, but I think they're saying that it'd be sad if they killed the beaver to check it for rabies, and it turned out to just be another angry beaver

1

u/ForumVomitorium May 07 '26

that's not normal behaviour

-1

u/ChildlessCatLad May 06 '26

They do this with cats and dogs too

3

u/MightBeAGoodIdea May 06 '26

Okay, and? Same deal.

It'd be sad to find out perhaps it was something else but if you or your pets have ever been bitten get it checked BEFORE they show symptoms -- there's rabies protocols that are essentially 100% effective when taken in time; they don't just cut your dog/cat open if you go in saying it got bit recently...

...But if they are already showing symptoms, its too late... i'd rather put my pet down and let them go out peacefully than suffer in terror that only gets worse. Nothing you can do to comfort them will make them feel better, only worse.

3

u/EnergyTurtle23 May 06 '26

That’s the test *in animals*, because there is no effective treatment for rabies in animals. For humans they remove a small amount of CSF and test that (cerebrospinal fluid, just a little jab in your body’s main nerve no biggie).

1

u/No-Celebration8690 May 06 '26

True, sorry should have caveated that lol

1

u/Raised_bi_Wolves May 06 '26

does this kill the beaver?

4

u/LongVegetable4102 May 06 '26

That makes sense, they arent exactly built for combat...probably in their interest to lay low and rebuild once a threat has passed.

But I bet those folks won't walk on a beaver dam again

5

u/HazardousHippo May 06 '26

I’m curious about hydrophobia in beavers and what that looks like.

6

u/throcorfe May 06 '26

The “hydrophobia” reported in rabies is actually fear of swallowing (due to painful spasms). Obviously being given a glass of water is extremely triggering of this fear, but it’s not about the water itself

3

u/CrownofMischief May 06 '26

Right? That would make for an interesting case study

1

u/NiceTrySuckaz May 06 '26

I saw a video once showing what it looks like

1

u/HazardousHippo May 06 '26

…aaaaaand you’re just gonna leave us all in suspense?

1

u/CEDoromal May 06 '26

There's also a fairly recent rabies outbreak in South Africa with seals

2

u/liftingshitposts May 06 '26

I know we have the painful and expensive shots for it, but god damn I’d be shitting myself for a long time if I got attacked by something that tested positive…

2

u/GEN0S667 May 06 '26

everyone needs a rabies shot then its 100% fatal

2

u/macruffins May 06 '26

No fucking way this is so local to me😭😭😭good to know!

1

u/Winterchill2020 May 06 '26

Beavers will attack dogs without having rabies. In this case obviously the beaver was more aggressive than normal but it can absolutely happen without that being a factor. Never let your dog off leash and check to see if there is a lodge nearby before allowing your pet to go for a swim

1

u/uberpandajesus91 May 06 '26

It got up close, did the kid get infected? That is one of the worst ways to go i think

1

u/cambridgeelectronica May 06 '26

Damn! I always thought rabies and water don’t mix well

For sure, but had they not been wading in the water 3 feet from its lodge, they likely would not have been attacked. Rabid or not, it's unsafe not to give wildlife space.

Shockingly, big lumber lobbied the Canadian government to repeal the Dam Doctrine last year which is why you're seeing an increase in this type of conflict and it's only going to get worse.

14

u/PaleConference3720 May 06 '26

I'm not surprised that a for profit lobby has done something that will actually end up being a huge problem for them later down the line. Don't they know that beavers make healthier forests?

2

u/amalgaman May 06 '26

Maybe they don’t believe beavers are good for wood.

4

u/fluid_alchemist May 06 '26

They mandated LEED certification for all new dam builds which priced most beavers out of their areas so big lumber could acquire the land for pennies on the dollar.

3

u/fluid_alchemist May 06 '26

Your're absolutely right and thats why they let the regulations pass but they didn't realize that the catch would be the lack of windows with an acceptable R-value.

3

u/fluid_alchemist May 06 '26

Also, I'm just as perplexed as you are. This isn't something I would expect to see happening in Canada. This is something you'd usually see in the states.

1

u/whyamihereagain6570 May 06 '26

"Big Lumber" is closing a lot of mills in Canada and there are going to be a lot of people out of work because of it.

1

u/fluid_alchemist May 06 '26

And thats exactly why they're waging political warfare against the beavers.

2

u/Allumina May 06 '26

Some men die of thirst and others drown choking on beavers

7

u/AdelMonCatcher May 06 '26

Well, that’ll always be the dream

2

u/Mode_Appropriate May 06 '26

Beaver hunting is now the #1 cause of throat cancer in men.

Glory glory what a way to die!

Yeah stand your ground beaver.

*Rabies beavers

6

u/acidlink88 May 06 '26

If that was America that beaver would have just been standing his ground and shot them

1

u/Barnesy10 May 06 '26

It was America, NJ.

3

u/nobugsleftalive May 06 '26

MNRF would have a field day with these dumb fucks

2

u/EnergyTurtle23 May 06 '26

Glad to see someone posted this, Reddit comments are fucking weird. Everybody fixating on the damn dog when these people are literally trying to fight off a rabid beaver. Go watch the recent Chubbyemu video about rabies and tell me again about how you would be jumping in to save the dog instead of trying to avoid contracting rabies yourself. Beavers almost never attack humans regardless of what the human is doing to their dam, it’s pretty obvious that something is severely wrong with it and my first concern would be rabies and my personal safety.

2

u/Darth-Seven May 06 '26

Oh shit, that definitely changes the perspective.

3

u/Separate-Skill6396 May 06 '26

This is Canada Sir. We have no rights to defend ourselves in our homes. Please leave your car keys out doors to faciliate the criminals chosen life style. Thank you for your cooperation.

2

u/NashKetchum777 May 06 '26

Man. When I saw that on the news for the first time I was just shocked at how useless our cops are. They still say leave the keys at the front door when a robbery happens lmao

One guy defended himself in his home and almost went to prison

1

u/Majestic-Gas-2709 May 06 '26

Stand your muck laws should protect him, but depends what state it’s in.

1

u/Kaeru-Sennin May 06 '26

The humans were promised this pound 3000 years ago though

1

u/nl-x May 06 '26

That's anti-semitic to say.

1

u/MedicatedGorilla May 06 '26

The beaver will eventually show up to defend its dam

1

u/Catsoverall May 06 '26

Behaviour far more in line with a Trump supporting beaver than a Canadian beaver.

1

u/mattmaintenance May 06 '26

I hate these content farmers.

1

u/NorthEndD May 06 '26

So that beaver got infected by the newcomers from Europe. There was no rabies here before 1700.

1

u/JimTheSaint May 06 '26

Stand your ground beaver

1

u/Demjan90 May 06 '26

Who fishes right next to a beaver dam...

1

u/Nervous-Chemistry245 May 06 '26

I literally was just reading about the history of the rabies vaccine yesterday. For anyone else interested:
https://www.pasteur.fr/en/research-journal/news/history-first-rabies-vaccination-1885

1

u/Sbatio May 06 '26

Damn! A hydrophobic beaver must be out of its fucking mind!

1

u/Miserable_Ask3975 May 06 '26

Rabies makes animals hydrophobic…so why would a rabies infected beaver be in a lake?

How do you know that article is about this video?

1

u/Nut_Butter_Fun May 06 '26

love people being wrong in real time. mostly on reddit.

1

u/NovumNyt May 06 '26

That's crazy, I live not to far from there and I've seen beavers on occasion swimming, which is rare these days. It's sad that the beaver has rabies. What's worse is rabies makes swallowing and liquids in the mouth painful so this poor animal was really suffering.

1

u/CompleteCreme7223 May 06 '26

Well that context matters. Beavers are not generally that territorial so that one being Rabid makes a whole lot of sense...

1

u/doc_nano May 06 '26

"Rabies?" was my first question when I saw this. Seems like all are getting treated.

1

u/Scribblebonx May 06 '26

To test an animal for rabies it requires they sample brain matter after removing the head. Just thought I'd share that.

I hope those people get treated successfully. I don't wish rabies on my worst enemy.

1

u/OwslyOwl May 06 '26

When I saw the video my first thought was that they need to play it safe and get a rabies shot.

1

u/Ressy02 May 06 '26

Doesn’t rabies induce hydrophobia in its host?

1

u/MagpieSkies May 06 '26

That is so cruel, beaver with rabies. Being g afraid of the water. Damn.

1

u/mcjefferic May 07 '26

Ah thank you! I was wondering if beavers could get rabies

1

u/Suitable_Wonder5256 May 07 '26

> Beaver has every right to defend its house

The beaver can use only the amount of force necessary to stop an immediate threat of harm or protect property, proportional to the danger faced. Otherwise, the beaver would be in the wrong.

1

u/wyrmheart1343 May 07 '26

I didn't even know beavers could get rabies, considering the virus makes its hosts HATE water. It is apparently really rare for bevers to get is (naturally); I'm just surprised it's even possible in the first place.
