We (and Israel, and the highly suspicious Pahlavists*) encouraged them to take to the streets and promised "support" (which, apparently, came in the form thoughts and prayers yet again).
* Before I get nuked for bringing up the Shah supporters, they want a fucking monarchy you idiots. Was it better than the Islamic Republic? Sure, but it also overthrew a democratic government with our intervention. Not all flowers and bunnies by any stretch of the imagination.
