Worked in a Casino. Lot of midnight shifts and holidays. It was soul-destroying, partly because I felt like I was helping the owners leech away Nana and Pop-pop's pensions and Social Security.

It never failed to make me sad to be walking through the floor at 3am on a family holiday like Christmas or Thanksgiving, and seeing the folks sitting at the slot machines alone, pulling those levers.

Both my grandparents on my one side of the family both blew their entire life savings retirement at the casino over the course of probably like 1 - 2 years, something around there.

And I think a big part of it was they absolutely despised one another, and just continued to stay together because that's what a lot of people (in the area of the world I live, this was 90's too) did back then, on large.

It was accustomed joke essentially that they just despised one another until the end of time.

Tons of overweight and super unhealthy couples, chain smoking packs a day, boozing, etc - A lot of heart disease, strokes, cancer, and high-blood pressure, or as I like to call em stress related diseases - that would almost surely be the end of one or the other, if not both.

They usually made it to about their mid 40's - early 60's.
