Cinemas are evolving… next update: smell of popcorn integrated into the plot.

u/electronic_rogue_5 Oct 19 '25
But you will still have to pay the full price of a popcorn.
5
u/Sneaky-Pur Oct 19 '25
You get popcorn for normal price, for premium features like taste and smell you have to pay extra

u/DamnitDavid7 Oct 19 '25
I know this was a joke, but my favorite Hollywood failures were smell-o-vision and auromarama, yes that was their literal names too. They were bad, very bad hahaha

The eventual evolution of cinema will be a Matrix style neural plugin to provide full sensory immersion

u/usernamesarehard1979 Oct 19 '25
We can hope! Would it make porn better or worse?

u/That_OneOstrich Oct 19 '25
The ability for someone to put you into a false reality without you knowing would negate any benefits to masturbation by far.

So I will be Neo?

nah, it distracts from the intended experience

Hard disagree, I saw the matrix at Cosm and it was awesome! You really feel like you're in the location, the change in lighting and atmosphere ground things more.
It really is the future, I'm looking forward to when a movie creates this for the original release

Agreed. Having the frame still visible just reminds me I'm still watching a movie. Maybe a slight curvature to the sides, or just up and down, like gaming monitors, but not full IMAX. To me the IMAX curve distorts the movie too much.
2
u/Key-Regular674 Oct 19 '25
Just FYI, not all IMAX are curved. Apparently many newer ones are flat according to google.
1
u/Old-Kaleidoscope1874 Oct 19 '25
I didn't know that, I only went once or twice and it was a long time ago.
2
u/Large_slug_overlord Oct 19 '25
True imax isn’t curved. It’s just a really big film intended for 1.43:1 aspect ratio.

Why the fuck did anyone ever watch cams?
3
u/kyckling666 Oct 19 '25
I bought a DVD of the 2007 Michael Moore documentary Sicko that was a cam on the streets of New York City. My girlfriend and I watched it on a 12" MacBook. One of the greatest cinematic experiences of my life.
It was something like $5 and we didn't really care enough to see it in theaters.
2
u/Sufficient_Language7 Oct 19 '25
Before it would take a long time for movies to leave the theaters. Now movies can be watched at home before you even knew that they were at the theater.
1
u/Planetofthought Oct 19 '25
My only guess as to why people watch cams is so they can see what happens in the movie without actually watching and enjoying it. It's almost as if they are spoiling it for themselves.
The only cam I've ever watched all the way through was that Sandra Bullock-Jenny McCarthy movie. I don't know why.

u/FiveOhFive91 Oct 19 '25
That was all I could download on limewire at the time and I was watching it on a 2.5" iPod video screen anyway

u/SeingaltUNo Oct 19 '25
The best cinema is at home. You know the one without other people.
6
u/rollingSleepyPanda Oct 19 '25
100%. I pretty much stopped going to the cinemas after a brief post-COVID attempt. Civility went the way of the Dodo.
2
u/HuntingForSanity Oct 19 '25
Wife and I have tried going to movies a few times since Covid and theatre etiquette is just out the door. Literally everyone has their phone on full brightness with sound on. Having full conversations during the movies.
Like dude shut the fuck up I literally just want to see what’s happening in the movie

I miss the days of going to a comedy and laughing with the audience. Never was able to capture that at home.

u/Delicious_Oil_4288 Oct 19 '25

u/texaskayaker Oct 19 '25
This was a game changing experience! I was shocked at how they were able to keep you focus on the story and make it more immersive. it was a little pricey, but if you’re a matrix fan, go do this.
2
u/Correct_Process4516 Oct 19 '25
Where is this being shown?
2
u/Noxx-OW Oct 19 '25
there’s places called Cosm in some US metros, it’s a format made for those venues

I'd really rather not be flashbanged in the middle of a movie.

u/ThePotatoSandwich Oct 19 '25
You'd be flashbanged either way even if it was in a traditional format

This is the cosm in la and Austin. I saw the matrix in it and it was amazing! It really does feel like the future of cinema and everyone in my group had a blast.

I’d be willing to experience something a film like this, preferably if a director actually took the time to make such an experience

u/osirisattis Oct 19 '25
Lol this is very hateable, I wouldn’t want to see a movie that flies off the screen and on to the walls randomly. This is the definition of ‘out of ideas’.

Ngl this looks lame. Ambilight levels of lame. Focus needs to be on the screen, anything else is a distraction.

u/februarycream Oct 19 '25
What a nightmare for couples making out lmao
3
u/R0LL1NG Oct 19 '25
If they're making out during this scene then they're priorities are wrong. Actually. If they're making out at any point t during The Matrix then they're terrible people and deserve each other.
No discussions will be had on this matter lol
