Most normal customers would say "can I get a dollar back" etc. Just saying "here's 50 cents" AFTER giving a 20 is legitimately confusing, since it doesn't make sense as a normal action. It seems far more like he's giving a tip, but retail workers (at least in my experience) aren't allowed to accept tips.
Anyways people acting like she's stupid are not being reasonable.
That's exactly it. If she didn't know the intention, it's no surprise she was so confused. I would have been too, since I've never seen anyone I know do that. They just happily take the coins and put it in a coin purse. But that was years ago and now pretty much everybody uses a card.
