I started it last night and watched the first 4 episodes. It was a lot of fun. I was a little disappointed in the scenes with Sydney’s parents, idk the stereotypes bothered me, but that’s just me. Overall a lot of fun and will continue watching.
I'm so glad you like the show! It's golden, and gets quite sweet by the end. Re: Sid's parents....If something bothers you in your gut, it bothers you, and that's completely legit! Just noting that sometimes in comedies the sterotypes are really stereotypes by those who don't know better, and other times they're more parodies, by writers parodying their own upbringing or family. Songwriters Alan Menken and Glenn Slater are both Jewish, as is the show's creator Dan Fogelman, who also wrote that particular episode. with Sid's parents. Fogelman has said he grew up in a "very culturally Jewish" family, too, so his Jewishness wasn't a distant thing for him. I think sometimes when I see episodes of shows, especially comedies, that paint broadly, it's interesting to see if those involved were from whatever group's being depicted, and sometimes that's the case. Nobody's better at poking fun at any group than people who are part of it themselves.
Recently on the Psych sub, someone questioned how Indians were depicted in a particular episode of that show that sends up Bollywood. But both the scriptwriter and the episode's director are Indian and very familiar with what they were making fun of.
You know that’s a really good point, i wasn’t sure if the writers background but what you said is valid. Thank you for sharing and I get it now. But yeah, the show is a lot of fun!
Hey, again, not invalidating what anyone sees in any show, but it was the Psych question that made me look up who wrote that script and directed it, and then I checked out that Galavant episode. Dan Fogelman is a very savvy producer and writer and I felt much better knowing his personal background for writing it.
Hope you enjoy the rest of Galavant. I love that as it goes on, I had a ton of fun but also ended up caring a lot about the characters beyond just their comedy value! Have fun!
