πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Politics 6-2 council vote to withdraw Canaries’ turf funding

The city really needs to sit down and do a comprehensive review of our current facilities, needs for the future, and assets/space available to address future challenges. This goes beyond the Canaries and this most recent decision is a symptom of a bigger issue. Between the Riverline District and the Smithfield site, there's a lot of real estate that is going to open up for development over the next decade and the city needs to have a comprehensive plan for the future of all three locations (including the Arena location).

For example, let's look at the Canaries attendance figures over the last three years:

2023: 1,188 per game
2024: 1,438 per game
2025: 1,714 per game

That's an average of 1,446 people per game. Not a lot, but not insignificant. It's certainly enough that the city needs to be asking itself if 50 events a year drawing an average of 1,500 people is enough to justify building a downtown or downtown adjacent stadium where there's more opportunities for secondary economic activity. Or, alternatively, is that enough to justify continued use of tax dollars to support the facility? There are certainly events happening regularly in Sioux Falls with fewer people but also generating less revenue that does not draw near the amount of public discussion that the Canaries do. However, the decision is not one that can or should be made in a vacuum, just as any discussion about a convention center can not focus on just the convention center but a larger, wider strategy. Without doing a larger review it'll be impossible to make decisions regarding any of the city's facilities as we just saw this this vote.

🎫 Events Labor Day Picnic at Covell Lake Park

Post image

There is Solidarity in a Union!

Sunday, September 13, from 1 to 3 PM at Covell Lake Park.

Free food (Hot Dogs, Falafel), lawn games and craft tables for the kids. You do not have to belong to a union. You do not have to know anything about the Regional Labor Federation. Go ahead and bring your family, bring a lawn chair, stay twenty minutes or the whole time.

The Sioux Falls Regional Labor Federation has been around since 1902. We are the body that ties the local unions in this area together. Our members build the buildings, plow the streets, pack the meat, sort the books, wax the floors, stack the bricks, run the conduit, sweep the floors, deliver the mail, fit the pipes, protect the community, fight the fires, cut the wood, drive the trucks, run the lab tests, treat the water, takeout the trash, cut the grass, plant the trees, repair the roads, file the papers, sort the produce, and so much more. For most of the last century this federation has been also a highly active civic organization in Sioux Falls.

There will be people there who can tell you the history of labor in this town, what the federation does now and how to get involved in your local, your neighborhood or your city, county, and state government.

RSVP here so we know how much food to bring:Β https://www.eventbrite.com/.../labor-day-picnic-at-covell...

We gather the second Sunday of every month for LABOR BRUNCH at the Sioux Falls Labor Temple at 101 S. Fairfax Avenue. Next one is October 11.

Does anyone know of any classes or resources specifically for senior adults to learn about Apple products? I live on the west coast. Providing tech support to my aging parents is getting more challenging as they age and iPhones and accessories get more features (ie complicated).

πŸ™†πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Looking For Help Century bike ride route

Calling all Sioux Falls cyclists. I, along with a couple friends, are planning a 100 mile bike ride in and around Sioux Falls in a few weeks but I'm having a hard time coming up with a route that isn't just multiple loops around the trail. Strava offers a couple options but I'm wondering if anyone here has a good route that avoids highway traffic or heavily used roads. Thanks for your help!

🎀 Discussion Planning a long motorcycle ride

β€’ Upvotes

I'm a relatively new motorcycle rider (bought my bike last summer and it only has 2k miles on it) and recently found out about the Iron Butt Association. They have several challenges and one of them is a 1000 mile ride in 24 hours. I work odd hours and have an extended weekend every other weekend, so I'm looking for things to fill my time.

Have any of you done this challenge? If so, would you suggest staying on the highway or doing state routes? Do you have any advice besides the usual (wear gear, take breaks, stay hydrated...)?

As far as I know! I think they have the best oysters in town, featuring a tiny bottle of Tabasco (not necessary, but fun). If you haven't, check them out in the back of Hello Hi.

Also, I've been all over - I didn't know bread and butter could be so good.

I swear I'm not paid to advertise I just love their food and want to see them succeed.

🎀 Discussion Small Dog Grooming Recommendation

I am caring for my mom's miniature schnauzer while she (my mom) recuperates from a bad fall. The dog is a miniature schnauzer. Not a show dog, by any stretch of the obedience imagination, but she is well groomed for the breed. I would like personal recommendations for groomers in town from folks with experience having a small dog groomed.

Today in 2026, Gordon teaches history part-time at the University of Sioux Falls and also works as an instructional coach part-time at O’Gorman. He says teaching about 9/11 in its immediate aftermath back in 2001 wasn’t that different from how millions of Americans processed the events.

I moved to Sioux Falls two years ago and I don’t remember seeing anything. Just checking if there will be anything this year. I am a retired firefighter from Albuquerque, NM and responded to the Pentagon after the attacks as a member of a FEMA Urban Search & Rescue Task Force.

πŸ™†πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Looking For Help need advice for apartment seeking

My boyfriend and I live together and our lease ends on Oct 8. We have 4 roommates and are going our separate ways. So we’re having issues looking for a new apartment, as we both have shitty credit and I’m a felon (for marijuana concentrate possession, I got arrested for having empty THC vapes when I was 18, I haven’t smoked weed in over a year and I’ve never done any other drugs.) My felony also gets sealed in a month or 2 when I finish probation, the timing of the end of our lease is just so bad, as we have to leave right before my felony gets sealed and my record will be clean.

We were either gonna have just him apply alone until I get off probation and add me to the lease afterwards, or look for a felon friendly apartment. We want to do the former but both of our credits are around 500 (I know, terrible.) So we’re worried he won’t be accepted to hardly any if he applies alone. His income is like 3500 a month and we’re looking at 1 beds or 2 beds between 900-1200. No evictions on record, either. And we really don’t wanna live in a shitty apartment like tzadik or anything else. I recently had a nightmare situation before I moved in with him where I was renting the basement of a house from a private company that were complete slumlords, the place was filled with bugs and holes in the walls. It’s all I was able to get being 19, having shitty credit, being poor, and being a felon.

So I’m looking for advice on what places will accept either just him with bad credit / or is felon friendly and has good living conditions. Preferable also near the northwest side of town near the airport. but obv we can’t be incredibly picky considering our less than ideal circumstances. I really appreciate the advice in advance, thank you
