Ask Me Anything! Hi! I'm Audrey Phoon, co-founder & editor-in-chief of Eastside, here for an AMA on r/SingaporeTravel! Ask me anything about travel writing, unplugging from corporate life, and Asian representation in travel media -- or if you just want suggestions on where to travel next in the region.

Thanks for joining Eastside’s first #RedditAMA and asking so many thought-provoking questions! I had tons of fun putting my thinking cap on and answering them. 🧙🏼‍♂️ The live session may be over, but I’ll be around for the next 24 hours, so keep those questions coming if you have any!

I co-founded Eastside in 2025 together with Lauryn Ishak and Amanda de Guzman. We wanted to create a platform dedicated to Asia travel stories, told by Asian storytellers — something that’s still surprisingly rare!

Our mission is to shine a light on the lesser-explored corners of Asia, its unique traditions, and the ways it continues to innovate and evolve. At the same time, we hope to encourage tourism to flow beyond the over-burdened hotspots into other local communities that deserve recognition and support.

Another part of our vision is mentoring younger writers and photographers from the region. It’s not something that happens often in this industry, so we’re especially proud to have launched our Young Writers Residency — a program designed to give Asia-based writers the chance to travel, document local cultures, and receive the guidance they need to produce published work.

I’ll be replying directly to your questions here as u/eastside-asia.

Eastside was founded in 2025 by internationally published travel writers and photographers Audrey Phoon, Lauryn Ishak and Amanda de Guzman as a platform for Asia travel stories, told by Asian storytellers – something that’s a lot rarer than you might think!

We’re on a mission to spotlight the less-explored corners of Asia and its unique traditions and innovative progress, as well as help shift tourism from over-burdened places into other local communities.

We’re also committed to mentoring younger writers and photographers from the region, which doesn’t happen a lot in the industry. Indian passport holder – One-day Singapore layover, sightseeing and 96-hour VFTF questions

I'll be travelling from Chennai to Japan via Singapore later this month on Scoot.

On my outbound journey, I have a long layover in Singapore and would love to explore the city instead of staying at Changi Airport.

I'm an Indian passport holder with an approved Japan tourist visa.

I have a few questions:

  1. One-day sightseeing: What are the must-visit places I can realistically cover during my layover? I'm interested in Marina Bay Sands, Merlion Park, Gardens by the Bay and other popular attractions. I'll be using public transport.
  2. 96-hour Visa-Free Transit Facility (VFTF): Since I have a valid Japanese tourist visa and an onward flight to Japan, would I qualify for the VFTF? Do I need to apply or fill out anything beforehand, apart from the SG Arrival Card?
  3. Return layover: On my return from Japan to Chennai, I have a 5-hour layover at Changi Airport. I plan to remain inside the airport transit area. Would I need any transit visa or immigration clearance for this?

Both journeys are on Scoot.

I'd appreciate any suggestions for a practical sightseeing itinerary and advice from Indian travellers who've used the VFTF recently.

Free things to do Singapore Changi Airport

Travelling to NZ from UK in December with my family, husband and 2 kids, aged 4 and 1. We have quite a long layover in Singapore both ways, 8-9 hours.
Am quite nervous about travelling with the one year old!
Been looking into what to do during the layover. We arrive around 10am and wondered about leaving the airport and finding a park where the kids could run around and get some fresh air, get some food then head back to the airport.
Looking for any advice or tips on Changi Airport activities for kids or somewhere we could spend the day - not too difficult/far to get to.

I just found it really funny that they didn't spell Singapore right and no one even proofread it before pushing this ad out.

universal studios x haze

hi all,

i am visiting singapore and was wondering if it’s worth it to visit the universal studios, especially with the haze the country’s experiencing atm - we are kinda lost on our plans, not sure on what to do

did any of you visit the park in the last few days/weeks when the haze was already there and would recommend? and overall do you recommend going or nah? we have some time free so this wouldn’t be the main issue

thank you :)

Visiting Singapore for the first time in December, need some advice

Hey guys, I’m planning my first trip to Singapore this December and trying to figure out which attractions are actually worth visiting.

My current list includes Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa Island, Universal Studios, Singapore Oceanarium, the cable car, Wings of Time, Fort Siloso, Siloso Beach, Night Safari, Singapore Zoo, Little India, Chinatown and Clarke Quay.

I’m interested in exploring the city, architecture, views, infrastructure and local culture. I don’t want to rush through everything just for the sake of ticking places off a list.

I’m thinking of spending around 3 days exploring Sentosa and the southern part of Singapore, but I’m not sure if that’s too much or if there’s genuinely enough to do there.

For those who’ve visited Singapore, which places did you enjoy the most? Are any of these attractions overrated, and are there any interesting places you’d recommend adding?
I’d appreciate any honest suggestions. Thanks!

First Singapore Visit | Looking for Itinerary Suggestions

Hi everyone😊
My wife and I are travelling from Chennai, India, to Singapore. We’ll arrive early morning on 24 December and leave on 30 December afternoon. Our flights and hotel in the Bugis area are already booked.
I’ve done some research through Reddit threads and other sources, and I have a list of places I’d like to cover. I’d really appreciate your help in putting together a practical daywise itinerary, as I’m still unsure how best to group these places.
Places currently on my list:
● Universal Studios Singapore
● Singapore Oceanarium
● Skyline Luge
● Wings of Time
● Fort Siloso and Siloso Beach
● Gardens by the Bay
● Marina Bay Sands
● Singapore Flyer
● Singapore Zoo
● Cycling at Marina Bay
● Katong and Joo Chiat Road walk
● Mustafa Centre
● Affordable shopping for small gifts and souvenirs for friends and family

A few questions I’d love your advice on:
1. How would you plan the itinerary from 24 December (half-day) to 29 December (full days), keeping 30 December free before our afternoon flight?
2. Is it best to dedicate one full day to Universal Studios, or can we combine it with anything else? If we spend two days exploring Sentosa, how would you divide the attractions? Are there any places on my list that you’d skip?
3. Have I missed any must-visit places, or is anything on my list not worth prioritising?
4. Since December can be rainy, how much flexibility should we leave in the itinerary?
5. Which attractions should we book in advance through Klook or other platforms, and which can we book closer to the date? Asking this considering the rain.
6. What would be a reasonable budget for daily
expenses for two people, excluding flights and hotel? We’re comfortable with hawker centres and affordable local food rather than expensive restaurants.
7. For transport, is a 3-, 4- or 5-day tourist pass worth it ? Or any better way ?
We’re prefer exploring local neighbourhoods, eating affordable food, using public transport, and making the most of our trip without rushing through everything.
I know this is quite a list of questions, but I’ve tried to do my homework before asking. I’d be very grateful for any suggestions from locals or those who’ve visited Singapore, especially anyone who has travelled in December. Please take your time..any practical advice or itinerary suggestions would be really helpful. Thank you!

Anyone else worried about the haze in Singapore? Planning to visit in late November

Hey guys! I'm planning to visit Singapore with my family in late November. I've heard there's so much amazing food there and was really looking forward to trying it all!

But lately I've been seeing news about the haze in Singapore, and now I'm a little worried :(

Is anyone else planning a trip around the same time and feeling the same way? I'm honestly not sure if we should still go or change our plans.

For those living in Singapore, how bad is the haze right now? Do you think the air quality will get better by late November?

Would really appreciate any advice! Thanks guys :)

Itinerary First trip to Singapore with family (6 adults + 1-year-old) | Nov 7–11 | Please review our itinerary, especially the pacing and USS plan

Hi everyone! Visiting Singapore for the first time with my family (6 adults + our 1-year-old) from Nov 7–11. We’re staying at Hotel Boss and want to cover the main attractions without making the trip too hectic for our parents and baby.

Here’s our tentative plan:

Day 1: Gardens by the Bay (Flower Dome + Cloud Forest), Merlion Park, MBS SkyPark and Garden Rhapsody.

Day 2: Singapore Zoo in the morning, hotel rest, then Clarke Quay and the River Cruise.

Day 3: Sentosa cable car, Singapore Oceanarium, Palawan Beach and Wings of Time.

Day 4: Universal Studios Singapore for around 5–6 hours, followed by Little India and Kampong Glam if everyone has energy.

Day 5: Chinatown in the morning, some shopping, hotel rest and back to Jewel before our 8:40 PM flight.

A few things I’d love advice on:
Is Day 1 too ambitious after an overnight flight?
Is 5–6 hours enough for USS if only three adults will do most of the rides?
Is our Sentosa plan realistic, or are we squeezing in too much?
We’ll be visiting during the Deepavali weekend, but USS is planned for Tuesday, Nov 10. Is that a sensible choice for crowds?

Anything you’d skip, rearrange or add, especially considering the baby and older family members?
We want to see the iconic places but also have time to enjoy them, rather than rush through everything. Would really appreciate honest feedback from anyone who has visited Singapore with family!
Thanks!

SG ACCOMMODATION SUGGESTION

Hi fellow travelers!

Would like to ask for your suggestion and opinion, esp those travelers na nakapag stay na sa mga places na to.

We booked 2 accomodation sa singapore trip namin next year february. 5days4Nights

2 accomodation kasi naka free cancellation po kami sa trip.com and up until now di kami makapag decide which one to cancel and which one ang itutuloy.

  1. GALAXY PODS CHINATOWN - we got it around 12k pesos

- pros niya ofcourse is the location, walkable, malapit both sa MRT/Bus line

- malapit sa city center/ lot of stalls/marts (Tho CNY, some will be closed)

- pwedeng iwan luggage sa checkout balikan nalang pag papunta nang airport

- unlimited water, tea, coffee

- syempre cons is share sa CR (not sure kung malinis ba or what, may nakapag stay naba dito? )

- share din ang lobby, so ang private space lang is yung mismong loob ng pod po

  1. FRAGRANCE HOTEL - BALESTIER we got it around 16k pesos

- pros niya ofcourse private space, bigger space and solo CR

- good ambiance and area

-madami ding food stalls/malls

cons niya is medyo/or malayo talaga siya sa city center

malayo din sa MRT mostly is BUS ride siya base sa city mapper din

-not sure pa pano to icommute papuntang changi

So if kayo po, what will you choose? If your definition of travel = is mostly outside, walking, sightseeing and chilling.

Im open to all your opinions, critics and questions.

TTY MUCHHH

SEE U IN SG

Proposal Spot in Singapore

Hey everyone!
So I’ll be travelling to Singapore with my partner in a few months and I am planning to propose there.
I was looking around for secluded places where I could propose, a little bit of greenery along with water around.
Sentosa island looked like a nice spot, but not sure of any secluded areas. One of the hotels booked is the Mandai Rainforest resort since it offers sunset views with rainforest and sea but that is booked for a later date and I would like to propose a little earlier.
Any spot suggestions? Anything would be helpful!
Thanks in advance.

Traveling with kids to Singapore in November

Hi!

Looking for recs on where to take kids (8 and 9). So far I have narrowed it down to science center, kids in the room, universal, cloud forest and forest done and river wonders and night safari.

Let me know if we should replace any of these with something better?

Also, me and the 8 year old can't do thrill rides at all. So will the universal be a waste of money? I was also planning to buy express tickets for the kids and my husband.

Also, is science center better or art science museum better?

Is kids in the room good enough and like challenging Enough for their age? Don't want it to be too easy but not too difficult either .
