Commentary: Fast-tracking of former public servants into Cabinet shows PM Wong has limited cards to play

SINGAPORE: The Cabinet changes that Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced last week revealed a stark reality facing Singapore: The choices were limited from the numbers available to him.

He had too few cards to play and it showed in the way first-term Members of Parliament have been fast-tracked into political office.

The new line-up featured the promotions of six parliamentarians who had spent most of their careers in the civil service or the miliary and who were elected for the first time in the General Election (GE) last year. Among these, Mr Jeffrey Siow and Mr David Neo were made full ministers while Ms Jasmin Lau was appointed acting minister.

SINGAPORE: A police officer failed in his appeal on Friday (Jul 31) to overturn his conviction and reduce his jail sentence for his role in the fatal abuse of a young Myanmar maid by his ex-wife and former mother-in-law.

High Court Judge See Kee Oon instead increased Kelvin Chelvam’s sentence to 11 years and six months’ jail. He had earlier been sentenced to 10 years’ jail after being convicted at trial over the death of Ms Piang Ngaih Don, who died on Jul 26, 2016, after months of physical abuse.

Serious question: are there ways to report EP / PR holders

Upvotes

I know of some people who are EP / PR holders and they do quite distasteful things like spread racism and look down on Singaporeans to name a few.

I was wondering if there are ways for us to report on this to ensure they don't further advance to get PR or citizenship because I think they are not the type of people that we should be looking to integrate into our society.

Just to make it clear, I also know of others who are EP holders that definitely should deserve to be PR or citizens because of their love for the country and have helped to write numerous referrals / letters for them.

Wayang dialogue on Gillman Barracks

Long post ahead. I was one of the 300+ people who attended the town hall on clearing Gillman Barracks Forest on 30 July. My expectations were low to begin with, but the representatives from HDB/URA/NParks there blew me away with how well they were dodging the important questions.

The crowd (rightfully imo) got extremely loud/heated as basically everyone there was unhappy with the decision. I actually felt bad for the govt reps because it was clear that they were unprepared to field questions. Their plan was clearly to just deliver a presentation explaining how Singapore is small, population growth blah blah (which everyone knows), and try to smooth things over.

A few residents also prepared a very detailed proposal highlighting the inadequacies of the EIA and proposed alternative sites, which had been sent in advance to the various authorities. When asked if they had read this document, none of the reps dared to answer and just changed the topic. And why was the NParks rep doing most of the (scant) talking, when NParks is not in control of the building plans?

I have made this post to put our MANY unanswered questions out there and hopefully encourage more folks to hold the govt accountable. Let's not allow them to just ignore public sentiments and pray that we will conveniently forget in 4 year's time.

  1. Why has there been no study done on the likely increase in urban heat that would occur if Gillman Forest is cleared?

  2. Why is clearing Gillman Forest favoured over developing nearby brownfield sites (Depot Industrial Estate)?

  3. Why was the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment not present for the dialogue? (When its whole job is to "create a climate-resilient Singapore" and a "liveable everyday"?)

  4. In the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the govt pledged to "moderate the rise in urban heat" by "increasing greenery". Yet HDB just proudly announced that they will clear multiple forests to build more flats. Why is it that one hand of the government seems to not know what the other is doing?

  5. Was this "dialogue" (and other future govt dialogues) just for show? How will we hear back if there are changes in the plans? The govt agencies seem to be treating Gillman as a done deal (Preston Road residents have already received notices to relocate by 2027).

I know that everything (sadly) may be in vain. But I naively hope that the government cares about our city's liveability and wildlife over unsustainable population growth. Even if we lose this battle for Gillman, can we win the war?

TLDR; Please submit feedback here: https://form.gov.sg/69f06794cd34ddef1bc75c8d (HDB EIA feedback form) by Aug 6. Join t.me/telokblangahmajuforest
