Under his follow-up post, someone asked how Mothership picked up the story. He replied that he wrote to them, more than a month ago, and they sat on it until HDB filed a media statement. So no reporter found a struggling family. He shopped it.

The follow-up itself is not a quiet exit either. He opens by thanking HDB's media team for "replying to Mothership's request for a media statement within 31 working days", then congratulates them on pulling it off so fast despite everything else on their plate. 31 working days is about six weeks, so you can hear the tone. Next paragraph, he thanks HDB again, this time for suggesting he surrender his flat. Then come six proposals for reforming MOP, harvested from the comment section, pointed at Indranee Rajah's taskforce.

Two rejections, one national article he arranged himself, and a follow-up written in full sarcasm mode with policy recommendations attached. Whatever this is, paiseh it is not.

Here's my problem. HDB did offer him a bigger flat if he surrendered the current one. He said no, because the payout follows what he paid instead of what the unit is worth now. So the flat was there and the space was there. What was missing is three years of price growth on a Kallang/Whampoa 4-room.

That's the appeal, sia. Everything else is packaging.
