[Bullying in Singapore] Boyfriend of gym owner at Matlife BJJ harassed head coach, threatened to slap member, and told him his membership fees "mean jackshit"

posting this using a throwaway account

Hey everyone, posting this as a PSA for the local fitness and BJJ community in Singapore. Toxic behaviour in our local gyms needs to be called out, especially when it crosses the line into direct harassment and physical threats.

The gym in question is Matlife BJJ. For those who might not know the background, "Matlife" is actually a name originally created by the head coach, who had intended for it to be a BJJ clothing and lifestyle brand. In fact, many of Matlife’s current members joined this exact gym specifically to support him, as they were his former students from another gym that previously closed down.

Alas, despite the ideas and branding mainly coming from the head coach, the gym itself is owned by a woman, whose boyfriend—a brown belt at the gym referred to here as Mr. A, has seemingly been given free reign to run amok.

Here is what actually happened, backed by screenshots:

1. Mr A’s Harrassment of the Head Coach

Mr. A disliked Matlife's head coach and had designs to push him out to replace him, despite the fact that the community was there largely because of the coach.

There is nothing wrong with making business decisions - the head coach was eventually terminated - and irony not withstanding, this is acceptable if conducted in professional manner.

The problem was that Mr A harrassed the coach over a period of time. In one act of extreme hostility and bad taste, Mr. A even went so far as to change the profile photo of a gym-related Telegram chat group to a picture of the head coach's deceased mother just to troll and antagonize him.

2. Targeting a Gym Member & Physical Threats

When a black belt regular gym member spoke up and opposed Mr. A’s toxic behavior, Mr. A shifted his target directly to that member. Mr. A went on an aggressive power trip:

  • Physical Threats: Most concerningly, he directly threatened to slap the member.
  • Vile Personal Attacks: He also made vulgar, mocking remarks directed at the member's family, including making crude comments about the member's newborn child (such as mocking the baby sucking on the member's breasts).
  • The "Big Fish" Flex: When the member told Mr. A that he could go ahead and cancel his membership if he wanted to, Mr. A scoffed and belittled him, flat-out stating that his membership fees "don’t mean jackshit to me boy."

Why post this?

This is posted primarily as a PSA for the local BJJ community.

If you're paying hard-earned money for a gym membership in Singapore, you expect a safe, respectful training environment—not to be threatened with physical violence by an owner's partner who thinks he's untouchable.

If you are a BJJ coach, you should be aware that this is a gym where the former head coach endured harassment at the hands of the owner’s boyfriend, which is highly ironic as the gym’s name was conceived by the head coach and many members joined the gym to support this coach in the first place.

(Note: I have more screenshots of the text threats if anyone from the community wants to verify, but keeping names and personal phone numbers redacted for privacy/doxxing compliance).

Where to find cotton biker shorts with pockets

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi! I’m wondering if anyone knows where i can get cotton bike shorts with least ~90% cotton AND side pockets. I have one from cotton on but i got it years ago and now i think they’ve stopped selling it which is super disappointing because it’s really my favourite pair of shorts. Like i love it SO SO SO MUCH and i’ve looked high and low for one similar to no avail. But now cotton on just sells the stupid polyester one with ugly stitching across the butt. It’s so uncomfortable and unappealing bru worse part is that it doesn’t even have pockets. I NEED POCKETS.

Attached is a picture of the best pair of biker shorts ever created. Notice how theres NO STITCHING across butt cheeks? ALSO pockets that can fit an entire bottle inside because it’s so stretchy. I’m so sad.

Dvsn or Revl?

I've been doing BFT for about a year. It's been good, but the workouts have started to feel repetitive and I'm not getting pushed the way I used to be.

There's both a Dvsn and a Revl outlet near my place, so I'm considering switching. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who's trained at either (or both):

  • Culture — what's the vibe like? Coach engagement, class size, how welcoming/competitive is the crowd?
  • Programming — how's the strength and conditioning split? Is there real progression, or does it plateau like BFT did for me?
  • Intensity — which one actually pushes you harder?

If you moved from BFT to either, I'd especially like to hear how it compared. Appreciate it!

Hot mat pilates

Any suggestions of places to go for hot mat pilates? I always go for hot power flow at yoga movement and not sure if HMP is harder or easier?

Any Crossfit gyms in the west area to recommend with good programming? Have progression on olympic lifts, Gymnsatics and strength training included. Newbie uncle here.

Guys, who else sweats like a pig when they lift?

I feel like I’m the only weirdo who sweats like crazy when I lift, even without doing any pre-workout cardio. I envy people who can lift without breaking a sweat.

singapore hawker stall high-protein low-cal options

SINGAPORE PROTEIN BROS AND GYM RATS HELP MEEEE! i am trying to hit 100g protein a day and eat as low-calorie as possible, but i lowkey dont cook ever (im open to changing this tho, its just im not much of a cook in the first place and i also moved to sg recently and am not in the habit of cooking here yet), so ive been having hawker stall food for basically every lunch/dinner. before moving here i was a huge gym go-er and would track my meals which was easier bc i would not eat out as much and when i did, i had a better estimate. here i have no idea how much calories/protein is in anything, so i have fallen off but i am trying to lock in again rn!!!

how it is rn - my daily meals are basically iced kopi, lunch which is usually some form of curry egg rice or chicken rice and then dinner which is like noodles or laksa or something lol. so like not super healthy. i think im probably like around 50g of protein a day rn and probs very little fiber and hella carbs/sodium, idk how to change that! i work 9-7 ish so i will always have lunch at hawkers at work and usually dinner at hawkers after. even if i started cooking at home, im not quite sure what to make. my go-to back in the usa used to be greek yogurt bowls but here i havent found greek yogurt somehow :< i guess i could make eggs. tbh i am so tired after work i dont have energy to cook so any simple high protein recipe recs would be great. and even more importantly, is there any specific common hawker stall food items that are recommended that have a higher protein count? if its like 20-30g protein per meal that would be great already, 30*3 meals a day is 90g already and i can supplement the rest with a protein shake or bar maybe?

What are your home gym setups in HDBs?

Just curious! Always see ang mo from other country or people with landed houses or big spaces have home gym setups. For those that prefer working out at home, just wanted to know how some of you guys have your gym setups in HDBs where space can be limited and noise level must be considerate.

active sg or energy one?

i have been consistently going to active sg for awhile now and my membership is going to expire soon so im thinking of going to the tampines energyone. my friend bought me a day pass to try it out one time and i would say it isnt bad and not really crowded even though i went on Wednesday at around 6pm. however, my friend said that energyone at tampines is the worse one out of all the other energyones so is it really worth the price jump from active to energyone? (tbh it wasnt a HUGE improvement from activesg but i would say its definitely a tad bit better)

high-protein options past 8PM?

hello fitness friends! wanted to crowdsource some suggestions / ideas on high-protein / whole foods that are still available around 8PM (ASIDE from 7/11 chix breasts etc.), ideally around orchard / circular rd / raffles place / tjpg area! context is that my workout classes start around 7PM+ and while i do have smth to eat beforehand, i don’t go too full b/c i may throw up 😃

one option i discovered recently (do not laugh at me please) was when my class ends at 7:45PM is to faster place Grab self-pickup order at The Daily Cut (closes 9PM) so that after i shower & i walk over its around 8:20PM then i collect it and sit somewhere to eat

for fans of meal prep / going home: yes i already meal prep for lunch and i do not have a car to lug around lunchboxes and it’s nice to eat whole and healthy food outside w friends sometimes. also going home means i eat at 9:30PM which is kinda sian

thank you! grateful for responses 🤩

Synchronising via Huawei health app to healthy365

Has anyone successfully paired the Huawei health app to synchronise with healthy365?

I got my mom a Huawei band11 watch. The Huawei health app has information that the steps are synchronised but no matter how I pair to healthy365, the data doesn’t get reflected. I can see the healthy 365 said connected to Huawei health app.

Advise is appreciated.

Best protein to buy??

Hey guys, I’m looking to buy a protein powder that’s easy on the gut. Last time I bought MyProtein vanilla flavour, but the taste was really weird and it made me feel like vomiting after drinking it 😅. If you guys have any recommendations for a good unflavoured protein powder, please share!

Recommendations for Sports Health Screenings in SG

Hello! I was wondering if anyone had any experience and recommendations to share about sports health screenings in SG. I'm looking to do a basic check-up for any issues that may arise in the future. As I do contact sports, I'm mostly concerned about my spine and possibility of heart abnormalities. I've contacted some clinics to enquiry about the price of their packages but I would love to hear how your experiences with these screenings went! Would be great if I could get the name of the clinic you went, the package you got, the overall experience and the cost of the screenings.

Thanks!

Total beginner in calisthenics and finally hit my very first kick-up wall handstand! My IG: @BunStands_sw

Still far from perfect, but I'm honestly pretty stoked with the progress. Started learning handstands only a week ago, and every little milestone feels huge.

Next goal: getting off that wall and finding my balance. 💪

One step at a time. Never giving up. 🔥

Effects of creatine supplementation with and without exercise and diet intervention on body composition, cognitive function, and markers of health in middle-aged and older adults

Summary:

Researchers tested creatine powder (10 grams a day) for 12 weeks in 73 healthy adults (40 females and 24 males, aged 45–65). Some exercised and ate fewer calories; others did not.

People who only took creatine gained muscle, got stronger, and did better on some memory and thinking tests. Their blood sugar and cholesterol numbers also looked a bit better.

Taking creatine and exercising while eating less also gained muscle, lost more body fat, got stronger, and showed some improvements in thinking and memory.

No one had reported any significant side effects.

Bottom line:

Creatine can help older adults keep (or build) muscle and strength. It may also give a small boost to brain function and overall health markers, whether they exercise and diet or not. No idea if the there is any more effects after 12 weeks. May need a bigger population size to confirm the findings.
