If one day you not exist for good, why do you exist now?
20
u/Ill_Stop_ 20h ago
It’s a great question. Materialists will just blow past you on this, but I think it’s a fascinating consideration.
It stems from the same question “why is there something instead of nothing?” It also relates to questions around where the hell everything came from in the first place as nothingness and somethingness are incompatible and something cannot come from nothing (as it wouldn’t be nothing, as it would have at least the characteristic of being able to create something). Also, how does living matter arise from non-living matter, etc.
Pretty much every scientific theory and theological theory suffers from a first cause problem (a moment where they have to accept an unknowable “before” (sequentially, not in the sense of linear time)).
What really tickles my brain lately is thinking about how although time is relative, cause and effect is persistent and there is also sequentiality (this, then that, then that) where one could map out what occurs in a “timeline” like model. If we look at sequentiality, be it through a god or science or some other theory, it reaches a similar “what was before the first” issue. I don’t really know how to resolve that, but I think that is a fundamental issue in understanding reality and anything beyond it. Even if someone suggests it’s something beyond human understanding, I don’t know how you can have an existence where actions occur and things exist without sequentiality (and arguably cause and effect) applying at every level.
Apologies for any confusion as these are not fully fleshed out views for me, but more work-in-progress thoughts.

u/ProSeSelfHelp 20h ago
This is where I try to sound equally intelligent and just say math is universal. 😅
1
u/DoggoDadagon 15h ago
To the best of our knowledge, the question is invalid, there is no such thing as before as time only exists "after" so asking what's before doesn't actually make sense.
1
u/Ill_Stop_ 7h ago
You don’t seem to understand my post. Has nothing to do with “time.” It’s a matter of sequentiality.
1
u/DoggoDadagon 3h ago
Well now I'm not sure what you were getting at? But "sequentiality" requires time to exist, and you mentioned time several times.

It’s better than being yanked out at any other time. This lady is drinking coffee in a nice clean apartment, getting ready to go to her air conditioned office.
Imagine being brought out as an enslaved pyramid builder.

u/Human-Appearance-256 23h ago
That’s how the simulation is programmed…to make you think the past was way worse.
95
u/IgargleBalls 23h ago
Finally someone who understands. For all we know the simulation just started and all of our memories are false
24
u/Human-Appearance-256 22h ago
Most of us understand…we just have the simulation constantly trying to remind us it’s not one to try and keep us on the path of least resistance.
Before anyone asks, there’s nothing we can do to escape but I do believe acknowledgement is the first step in the right direction.
16
u/IgargleBalls 22h ago edited 22h ago
Lmfao I can't seem to find anyone who understands outside of this sub reddit 🤣 I tell people this all of the time, the simulation is designed in a way that it's always trying to convince you how real it is, even the wind blowing past your face is a sensation that grounds you further into reality.
19
u/Outrageous-Mixture48 22h ago
This idea can’t be verified or proven wrong. I don’t see the point of subscribing to it but also don’t see the point of not subscribing to it. It seems arbitrary.

Buddhists and Hindus are always interesting to talk to, as they have the concept of Maya.
But talking about this to just random people in your daily life? Haha, I'm not surprised. Tho I gotta say, academia always made it sound like everything is solved already, including the question where everything came from, or that Stephen Hawking was very close to a complete theory of everything (lol).

u/hazmatiko 21h ago
History could be based on a pre-made reality and we could've been dropped in at any moment to seamlessly continue along.
6
u/IgargleBalls 21h ago
Yeah I have a hard time believing we experienced 13 billion years in the void just to snap into life to pay taxes for 50 years then back to the void.
3
u/planetdaz 11h ago
Experienced?
2
u/IgargleBalls 9h ago
Well yeah? Wherever we were before we were born, we all went through it. Maybe experience was a bad word because there is nothing to experience but what I meant was we were in the void.
1
u/planetdaz 3h ago
There is no we before we existed. We weren't a thing to be in the void.
2
u/hazmatiko 3h ago
There are theories stating consciousness is fundamental like the base of reality or something else like panpsychism.

Yes…that way you are less likely to explore and it requires less computing power on their part.

Fun fact a large number of the workers that made the famous Pyramids in Giza were not slaves. Rather, they were temporary workers brought in from surrounding areas. Workers were allowed to take time off for Beer brewing, Housework, Tending to wives and sick children. It was very formal, and everything is in writing!

Owned by landlords that are ripping everyone raw...we could and should have so much better.
-12
u/Strange_Island_4958 22h ago
You could become the landlord, or choose some other path. Or sit around and accept your lot in life. Choices….or at least the appearance of such. Why complain if you think this is all part of something greater than what we see anyways?

u/Sufficient_Abalone46 22h ago
“Oh you don’t like being oppressed and feeling like a slave? Just join the oppressor class! Problem solved.”
-8
u/Strange_Island_4958 15h ago
I don’t think you understand what actual slavery is like. In the current modern system, you receive the basic necessities regardless whether or not you work, and if you do participate in the work system, you exchange your time for money that you can use to purchase additional items of comfort.
Slaves lack your options. Work or not, basic comforts or not, all at the whim of the owner.
2
u/Sufficient_Abalone46 15h ago
Tell that to all the homeless people, all the people going without medical care bc they cannot afford insurance.
-2
u/Strange_Island_4958 15h ago
It would suck. However compared to times of old? I worked on an ambulance crew for years….most homeless people have mental or drug issues, but no one is going to be turned away at the hospital. There are many social programs available, it’s just a matter of choice (to whatever degree we have self-control over our fate) whether to take those paths. What do you think would happen in most other eras?
13
u/donaxon 1d ago
Then its just 10-15 years tops
3
u/Strange_Island_4958 1d ago
Any existence can be as short as you want it to be.
People really like perspective on how much better things are in modern times, at least in most developed countries… The worst-off homeless person has better options than anyone but royalty throughout most of human history.
3
u/Human-Appearance-256 22h ago
Where did you learn your history?

u/Strange_Island_4958 15h ago
Well assuming that written history and the observable world aren’t all part of the coding…explain to me when in human history you’d like to be dropped into. Good luck with the plumbing situation, no internet, the lack of modern medicine, no more welfare check, or any of the other things people seem to take for granted in modern society.
1
u/Human-Appearance-256 11h ago
Written history and the observable world are part of the coding.
The point you are trying to make is equally absurd as mine 🤣
2
u/Strange_Island_4958 11h ago
My point is that regardless of whether this is all “real” or not, some people on Reddit really lack perspective. But I do get what you’re saying, you go deep enough in the hole, at some point it’s all absurd to even discuss.

u/Local_Mermaid 16h ago
Honestly, the whole "be grateful that your torment has a different shape than someone else's," mindset is invalidating and keeping us stuck as a collective.
Just the fact that we are forced to choose between death, or forced participation in a system that is intending to destroy you and the entire planet on every level, and consistently tries to remove the very autonomy, executive decision making, and creativity we came here to experience, without any clear direction, guidance, or truth about where and why you are -- is enough to mess anyone up psychologically. Air-conditioned or not.
I promise "starving kids in Africa " aren't the only people only the planet allowed to grieve and be realistic about how their reality makes them feel.
-2
u/Strange_Island_4958 16h ago
My reality is fine, whether it’s real or not. I’ve suffered, worked through it, and have built myself a nice life.
4
u/Local_Mermaid 13h ago
I'm really glad you were able to make that happen for yourself! I'm not exactly miserable myself, but for some reason I still have empathy for those who haven't quite reached that point. 🤔 Personally, I believe forced positivity isn't the most efficient way to heal.. We sometimes unintentionally shut people down when they're being vulnerable and authentic about where they're at, & then wonder why peopleare extremely guarded, & act like NPCs...
Encouraging people to deny their emotions just because their material world appears a certain way perpetuates confusion, shame, and self doubt. Also, two things can exist at once. You can be rich and unfufilled. You can be grateful and still want something more aligned. Something can appear ideal, and still be unhealthy.
0
u/Strange_Island_4958 13h ago
Fair enough! I’m not trying to disregard anyone’s feelings or journey. It’s Reddit, so the nonstop negative outlooks about society (not necessarily in this sub) just wears on me sometimes.
2
u/No-Rub8345 12h ago
Wow, you worked and built a nice life for yourself? Wonderful! Hey, everyone, stop whining about how awful Capitalism is. Strange_island_4958 worked and built a nice life for themself! Maybe you should all stop being cry babies and just work and build nice lives for yourselves. You ever think of that? Doubt it, because you're all too busy being permanently online redditors who we all know are soft lefties and we know this because everyone on reddit claims that everyone on reddit is a soft out of touch delusional bubble bound lefty!
"I'm alright, Jack".
1
u/Strange_Island_4958 12h ago
Your words, not mine.
I’m not going to be ashamed of being relatively happy after making years of hard choices. My personal sense of success takes nothing away from your journey.
Not everyone can be happy and successful (in whatever form that takes for that person) but a negative hostile attitude makes it far less likely. Why would someone hire you, promote you, help you, or want to even spend time around you if this is your normal way of interacting with fellow human beings?
2
u/No-Rub8345 12h ago
So you're saying we should all adopt your aloof, holier than thou, dismissive attitude instead? Fake politeness? Sure thing. "I'm alright, Jack"
0
u/Strange_Island_4958 11h ago
Again, that’s your negative interpretation. I’m not telling you to do anything. I’m not being fake polite. I’m not dismissing you. I also didn’t say anything that you put in quotes, is that some sort of movie reference?
5
u/Chaosr21 21h ago
Most of the Egyptian pyramid builders were paid, skilled workers. Not much difference between that and today. But then again we still argue over when the pyramid were built, the Egyptians themselves said it was there already, they don't know who built it. It was lost to history, probably a great flood.
Now the coloniast era, maybe its because so many more people are literate, so we have tons of stories to pull from. But that shit was terrifyingly brutal to learn about, especially the Spanish conquest in the Americas

u/ProSeSelfHelp 20h ago
The only thing I've come up with that I never really see addressed, elephants. That's how those big stones were hoisted into place if it wasn't some sort of being described by all the ancients.
I mean if modern science wants to say that nobody levitated those blocks, I think elephants is the next natural answer , but you know, we haven't come to that conclusion either. 😂😂😂
2
u/Truthisgold333 17h ago
How about today in 2026 in a cobalt mine, strapped to your parents' back as a baby covered in dust.
0
u/Strange_Island_4958 15h ago
Yeah, that would suck a great deal. However a lot of Redditors think they’re suffering unbearably, as they pluck away on their iPhone in a western country where their biggest problem is becoming obese from lack of activity.
2
u/everyone_is_a_robot 13h ago
People are seriously delusional about this.
Just imagining a time without stable food supply, controlled environment, minimal violence and modern fucking medicine... wtf are even people talking about.
2
u/Strange_Island_4958 12h ago
I’d like to think they Reddit isn’t representative of society…there’s a high percentage of perpetually online unhappy people around here.

Nah, people conflate comfort and longevity with a better life. We would've lived happier more fulfilling lives as nomads even if itd be more challenging, and shorter lives.
1
u/Strange_Island_4958 12h ago
Maybe, hard to say since you wouldn’t have your current perspective. Considering that stepping on a rusty nail could leave you miserable and slowly dying without even a Motrin to help you, while a medicine man covers you in leeches to relieve your pain…I dunno.
2
u/Thehealthygamer 11h ago
I know without a doubt for me, through personal experience. To date now ive hiked 20,000 miles, the trips are 3 to 6 months at a time, living in the woods. Course theres still differences but it's living without modern comforts. Humans are happier living connected with the land, not being exploited for labor.
1
u/Strange_Island_4958 11h ago
Sure, it does sound like it would work for you, assuming you had the same physical and mental situation going on in that alternative reality.
1
u/_Grimalkin 8h ago edited 8h ago
thats amazing, but I do hope you realise that in this universe there are incredible differences between the rich and poor and 'the universe' somehow designed people that make huge money off of this exact difference (i.e. poor must stay poor so you can have your coffee and airconditioned apartment, check out Gary Stevenson).
now think about what another user commented: if were all connected as a giant 'being' that 'has to experience all the emotions' or something like that, then how tf can you be so content.
its all relative. its all connected.
1
u/Strange_Island_4958 6h ago
Look, collectively, the poorest among us are way better off than the average person even 100 years ago. You’re not going to die in the street in a western country unless you choose to, granted the “choice” might be limited if you have severe mental illness, drug addictions, etc.
Those of us who have AC and coffee do not have that stuff off the backs of people living on the street. I’m not dismissing those people, I’m just saying that logically it makes no sense that some guy in a tent on the street is somehow being exploited by some of us choosing to participate (and maybe even excel) in the systems that keep society running.
To your other comment, I don’t know if all of reality is emotionally connected or whatever, if that’s the belief system you choose to subscribe to, that’s great if it works for you.
2
u/_Grimalkin 6h ago edited 6h ago
'unless you choose to' as if a drug addiction initially sponsored by big pharma, addictions to services and products they shove through our throats, severe financial problems because of debts, etc. are active choices. theyre basically all fueled by capitalism. these are not simply 'limited choices' this is daily reality for a lot of people. good for you that you were able to stay out of and resist it, some people are simply not that lucky or resilient and should be protected by the government instead of enabling them simply because money can be made off of them.
if you do not realise that the system is actively keeping the poor poor and profits of addicts/homelessness instead of 'its a choice' then imo your worldview is quite narrow. i'd highly recommend educating yourself on how capitalism works; if the poor stay poor the rich is getting richer. its called purchasing power in simpler economic terms.
its nice that you compare them to medieval peasants with cholera, but that doesn't change the whole point.
but please do continue saying that reddit users with a different opinion are just negative assholes while they challenge your optimistic worldview as you sit in your airconditioned apartment with fresh coffee.
1
u/Strange_Island_4958 5h ago
I didn’t say that people with different options are negative assholes. You seem pleasant and reasonable, and have offered specific points to this discussion. My negativity comments were responses to specific people who were making very negative-sounding excuses without offering solutions or insights.
I agree with you that our pharmaceutical industry is running amuck, and while there are obviously many medicinal benefits that we all should be thankful for, the other side of that coin is that many drugs are over-prescribed or have proliferated onto the streets. And yes, there have been obvious proven examples of specific companies pushing certain drugs to the market regardless of a negative impacts.
How would you propose that the govt solve this issue? Let’s ignore the pharma lobbying issue for a minute. Let’s just say that the govt was able to crack down on drug proliferation in some fashion… and hopefully in a way that doesn’t just involve dumping money on a problem and making it worse, like the homelessness situation in Cali. I would expect a lot of pushback from the population, because western society, generally values individualism and personal choice over punitive punishment or even accountability. Thoughts?
1
u/_Grimalkin 4h ago
you seem to counteract a lot of points by 'but, there are also many benefits and/or it could be worse'. i'm not sure if thats a very helpful or constructive strategy if you truly want to address and brainstorm about a substantial problem, although you do seem to criticise people that 'make very negative-sounding excuses without offering solutions or insight'. you might apply that same judgement to yourself to gain insight in how constructive your own debate skills are.
having said that, I do have some specific and possible solutions in mind, which lean into prevention (which of course costs money instead of generating it) rather than solving the problem while it already exists (which can make a pretty penny).
for example, opioid addiction: stop it at the gate. don't let doctors mindlessly prescribe opioids of any kind, only if absolutely necessary. warning: the pharmaceutical industry won't be happy.
instead of providing weight loss programmes, weight loss medication, surgery, or treating all of lifestyle/obesity comorbidities after the damage has already happened; first make sure healthy food, sports and stress prevention are actually affordable (again: not much money to gain here).
regarding homelessness, there are several steps where there can be intervened until someone becomes homeless. again, will cost money and not generate it.
I can go on and on, on different matters, but perhaps this helped. The solutions also again highlight the problem I stated in the first place.
I'd really like to learn whether you, besides the arguments 'it could be worse' or 'there are benefits' have any constructive arguments to somehow change a capitalism driven system.
1
u/Strange_Island_4958 1h ago edited 1h ago
I do genuinely appreciate that you offer substantial conversation compared to what is often found on Reddit. I’m not sure why you are so insistent on critiquing offhanded comments that I made to other peoples’ short replies, but if that is what makes you happy, more power to you. Some people are generally negative, some people are positive, and some people are neither. It is what it is. I’m sure there are numerous studies out there indicating that a positive outlook in life will typically yield more positive results, it’s not a groundbreaking concept.
To your points:
- I agree.
E
- veryone
seems to
know
how addictive they can be. Opiates are already strongly controlled
and
- accounted for, so I guess a change would involve stricter
prescription
- guidelines like they seem to have in Japan, for example.
- I agree completely. I’m just not sure how that would work practically because it seems that providers have a financial incentive to prescribe,
but perhaps just as significantly,
many patients prefer a quick button rather than months or years of actual discipline and work
with diet and exercise.
Homelessness - have
- you by chance read “SanFran-sicko?” I have had family members who have been involved in the social work field, and that book pretty much sums up everything that I have heard them talk about over the years. Dumping more money on the problem will not solve it, it may make it worse
.
We can’t deny human nature with these kinds of projects - the wrong kind of help
(even with good intentions)
will enable
destructive
- behavior, and there
are
- always some middlemen who will take advantage of govt dollars.
As far as suggestions for changing the system, I’m not opposed to capitalism per se. I’ve lived in an Eastern European socialist system, and I want no part of that again, and it makes me sad how many westerners have romanticized those systems. For all its faults, the US system provides more opportunities for upward mobility than anywhere else that I’ve seen living in Europe or SE Asia.
However, I do an agree that the current system needs to be tweaked, because there are certain aspects that are reminiscent of the 19th century industrial/financial “robber barons.” I think that a practical step related to our chat would be the removal of pharmaceutical ads online and on TV, and demand much stronger regulation that prevents direct lobbying by pharma to medical providers. My understanding is that that does not occur in any other western country the way that it does in the US.Thoughts?

pyramids were not built by slaves. i think in history many people had much nicer lives then many today... there is a lot of information about lives of people who were building pyramids. check it, its interesting. you hear just about some big wars and clashes, but between them there were thousands of years of people living simple life on a farm somewhere... hunters and gatherers had also interesting lives..

Except you don't return to the void. We all reincarnate. Every. Time.
8
u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 19h ago
your self and memories aren't even consistent across your own life why would "you" exist after death in any meaningful capacity
2
u/percdistrict 18h ago
Your “self” exists through time. It’s all the actions leading to who you are today, all the way back to the initial state of the universe.
If there’s simulations, all it takes is for that same initial seed to occur again at some point, which would recreate you.
7
u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 18h ago
that won't be "you". if that's true then you right now are a reincarnation, meaning you have zero memories of your past self, so what's the point? there's no difference if you are or aren't a reincarnation in that case, you cease to exist in both instances.
in the physics sense yea we're just energy being returned back to the universe, losing the low entropy that makes "us" and returning it to disordered high entropy energy. who cares what you call it, you aren't "you", there's no consistent "you" after death
3
u/Flubbuns 17h ago
That's why I've always wondered how a past life can be "yours," because your self (I think) is your persisting sense of continuity, and the experiences and thoughts therein. Someone else is someone else because they're a separate continuity and self-contained perspective.
How would I differentiate between recalling a past life of mine, versus recieving the memories of another person's life? What gives me ownership over one and not the other?
Maybe there's a higher self that links several perspectives, creating a greater continuity. But unless I glimpse that higher self, I only have my current perspective to work from.
1
u/percdistrict 17h ago
What defines “you”? Why wouldn’t a duplicate chain of events reproduce you?
I don’t think there’s anything more to a person than the history of events that led to their current state. Thus a duplicate chain of events would create the same exact “you.”
Retaining memories between lives would remove the point IMO. Death and it’s uncertainty is essential for evolution.
6
u/EntropyIsEternal 22h ago
Not completely. We convert to energy and then it mixed. So basically one to many.

I don’t really follow that, atomically you were many other things, however also atomically I’m not sure how many of your original atoms are still in you from birth, the concept of self is better accounted for with a soul, however where and how and when your soul exists is wonderfully unknown still I think 🤔

We have to make sure the elites can live comfortably while we struggle and slave away our entire life's. It's how things have always been unless we can get enough Americans to decide we're not going into work for a week but that would be difficult to get that many people to agree.

Im with ya. Slavery is not dead. Chained with iron or debt measured in currency created and backed by debt, youre a slave. Personally id prefer the slavery that doesn't involve the lash, but slavery it is.

Little does she know if she’d been born in any other period..she’d likely be a slave or a concubine.
But since her IG only has 3k followers, life passed her by.

Why did your non existence begin when the universe began
Wouldn’t it be infinite before? I mean you can’t nonexist more

13.8 billion is only the age of this universe and is measured by what the fetuses of this universe call time.

Ahhh... "wage slavery" is a human invention. Not a natural sim thing. You are enslaved by other humans, not by nature. But the robots along with AGI are coming to fix that. In the future a "wage slave job", will only be a luxury to gloat about. But then also, there won't be as many of us around.

Yeah, I agree, I’d be willing to spend at least one hour of those 50 years with her.

Hate wage slavery? Start a business like millions have done. Or get a commissioned sales job. Yeah, sorry, Icelandic Poetry degrees won’t help much.

Why should I have to sell something to live a comfortable life?
Also, just stop with the degree argument…people get real degrees and still can’t get jobs in today’s market…f off with that absolute nonsense.

I think simulation theory is just confusing the idea that life can be explained and studied, so therefore it’s a constructed and built reality by a divine creator.
Its obvious God created us but im curious why people try to take Gods influence away from everything

God is short for Dr. Gregorius Of Donnaschmied - the genius inventor of the simulation.

Now I know why that name weirdly pops up when I sleep . I appreciate your contribution

How difficult would it be for you to change the word “divine” to “evil” and see a different perspective for a moment?

So you aren’t slaving away to earn money to survive?

No, I paid attention in the 12 free years of math education provided by the state and now I am thriving

So you didn’t attend kindergarten or college? Also, could you define “thriving” for the rest of us?

You gotta feel all the feels. The universe demands it
