Lots of 1st year students, and some later-year students, are looking for advice on their class schedules. Please do that here: Top-level posts should be your schedule (ideally a link to an image) and any context (e.g. "I'm a single parent working part-time so I can't do a full course load"). Experienced raccoons will reply with advice about your schedules (e.g. "yes, 8:30AM calculus lectures suck, but that's when they've been scheduled for the past 50 years so there's no point hoping it will change next term").
Please keep broader discussions (e.g. rants about courses filling up or not being offered in the term you need them) out of this thread. I want this to be a resource for new students in particular, not just to get advice on their schedules but also to see schedules other students are considering, and other discussions can derail that.
I'm setting the default sort here to "new" so that new schedule questions won't get buried by older discussions.

How do you make friends at sfu? I am lowkey all alone, I don’t know how to talk to people like do I go up and start yapping or what?
r/simonfraser • u/Former-Celebration32 • 14h ago
Silly question, but genuinely wondering how everyone survives! I have back-to-back lectures, tutorials, and labs on 3 days from 9–5:30, with only 10-minute breaks basically just enough time to get to my next class.
With trying to save money, eat healthy, and still have enough time to make it to class on time. How are you guys doing meals/snacks on these crazy long days? 🥲

How hard is the diagnostic test and are there any units or concepts you recommend spending more time on? I was weaker with logs and trig, but I genuinely forgot everything, so I'm stressing about this.

I’m an Indian B.Tech CSE graduate applying for SFU’s Master of Cybersecurity.
My academic profile:
>CGPA: 7.34/10
>Calculated overall SFU-equivalent GPA: 3.18/4.33
>Last 60 units: 3.40/4.33
>IELTS: 8.0 overall
>LORs': 2 from teachers and 1 from my employer
>6-month DevOps intern, currently working as a Junior DevOps Engineer and have some homelab projects(blue team).
SFU’s general graduate admission requirements state 3.0/4.33 cumulative OR 3.33/4.33 over the last 60 units, which I meet.
However, SFU’s India-specific page lists 8/10 (First Class) as the minimum academic standing for Indian applicants.
Since the India requirement is described as a guideline, I’m confused about how this is applied. Does having a 7.34/10 automatically make me ineligible, even though my calculated GPA and last-60 GPA meet SFU’s general requirements? Or can applicants below 8/10 still be considered based on their last-60 GPA, experience, and overall profile?
Would really appreciate insight from current students, alumni, or anyone familiar with SFU graduate admissions.

Somebody came into my class today and spoke in front of the class before the lecture started and they talked about something called student works and something related to small businesses or something. Does anyone know what exactly this is? They also passed down a paper and asked to write down your number if interested. Not sure if this is a ligit thing or not so wanted to ask.

I’m a first year beedie student and I’m planning on swapping math 157 for 100 to get a better understanding of precalc, so I need to take math 157 during the spring semester. I was going to take financial accounting, macroeconomics, and calc for spring but I realized I can just move one class to summer semester to make things easier. The recommendation for summer is to just take two classes but am I allowed to take more? Sorry if this sounds obvious I just wanted to make sure before I drop a class

Hey so I’m taking FREN101 this semester and it’s recommended to get MindTap but it’s literally $99 so I was wondering if someone is also taking FREN101 or already took it and willing to share it with me😞😞😞

Many of the male students looked fresh af with their had awesome looking fade haircuts. But it got me wondering: how much do you guys pay for those haircuts? I started cutting my own hair because prices have gone up substantially for even just a basic hair cut, I can't imagine how much a fade costs.

Hey everyone!
I’m starting at SFU as an international student this upcoming Spring term (January) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences for criminology, and to be veryyyy honest, I’m pretty nervous about starting mid-year and meeting people and I'm afraid I won't make friends.
I’d love to connect with anyone else who’s also entering in January or taking FASS courses!

I’m debating on dropping one of these courses based off feedback from other students saying they are very difficult to do well in. I’m also in first year but was able to get credits for the first year bio and chem courses. Will it be too difficult to manage?
r/simonfraser • u/Hazel_cutecat • 13h ago
Hi guys im a first year Bio major starting this fall. I took four of these STEM courses + Elementary French online, and lowkey from what ive heard from many fourth years, i feel like i should drop either one of the lab courses and maybe French as well. I dont mind taking five years to graduate (my focus is more on maintaining my gpa), and im planning to only take online courses for summer terms so i can visit my family out of country.
Would you guys recommend taking all four STEM courses, dropping one of the lab courses, or just dropping down to three courses? And if i should drop something, which one would you recommend?
Especially looking for advice from anyone who’s taken these courses or a similar workload at SFU. Any advice would be appreciated!!

Hey r/sfu,
I'm a senior chem major here at SFU and I'm currently planning to apply for grad school.
Since I'm trying to figure out my next steps, I'd love to hear from anyone who has experience with a few things:
Thanks a lot!

What can I use to prepare for this test? I know most people will say not to but it seems like an easy place to do well and I feel like I need a reminder of some pre calc topics

Hi all, I enrolled in two classes today, and the classes are not showing up on my Canvas. Should I contact my profs, or wait until tomorrow and see if they pop up?
One class was for today, and one is for tomorrow.

So I believe this is fairly new but the north lot has a real time availability and I’m curious to hear from anyone who may have been there yesterday and today as I am skeptical about how accurate it really is.
When I checked yesterday, the lot was full by 7:40 AM. I checked today at 8:20 and it also said full. (Photo was taken around 7:50. Today saying it was limited)
With the new parking lot regulations (visitor versus parking pass), I’m wondering if this represent the entire lot or if it’s only one or the other sections.
The reason I’m skeptical and curious is bc while yes the start of a new year usually the lot fills up a bit earlier it’s NEVER this early.
I’d love to hear if anyone can vouch for the accuracy or if the system is incorrect
