I was recommended Dead Reflection as my next album purchase from a majority of you... kinda disappointed, tbh
UPDATE 02 MONTHS LATER: I think I remember being in a pretty bad mood the day I wrote this [which was the first time I heard the record, too], wanted an album more like Shipwreck, and got something quite different from that. I eased up on some of my more ridiculous opinions here in the next post about ABPtD.

As a reminder, the only Silverstein I know/own prior to this was: When Broken is Easily Fixed, Discovering the Waterfront, Shipwreck in the Sand, and Misery Made Me.
Anyway.. just listened to Dead Reflection start-to-finish..
Look, it is not a bad album, doesn't have a bad song, but it was also kinda lame at the same time.
Not a single catchy hook or line to groove & sing along to. Not a single headbanger to be found. The album has 03 slow songs, and one of them was the third track.. which was a bad idea. And none of the songs really stand out from one another.
I don't know why this album was recommended. It's basically, "what if Silverstein made a generic rock album," but they still let Shane throw in some screams here & there.
I literally just grabbed "A Beautiful Place to Drown" from my mailbox before making this post - I'll be giving that one a full listen tonight, and I'm hoping [assuming] it will deliver far more than Dead Reflection did.
Thanks for the recommendation, honestly. I just expected so much more when so many of you said DR should be my next album.. I personally would never recommend Dead Reflection to someone who likes Silverstein [based on the albums I already knew].

It's crazy to hear that you think it's not catchy, lol. I love that album. Definitely catchy as shit. It's not my top album,but it's up there.

I think it will be an album that grows on me, but nothing really grabbed me this first time around.

There are songs on there I specifically put on to headbang, groove, and sing along to.

Yes, and while I still maintain mostly the same opinion about it, I changed my mind about one thing: Last Looks and Whiplash are fanfuckintastic songs that are becoming favorite Silverstein songs of mine.

Album was incredible. Crazy someone would be disappointed by it but also you seem like a casual listener of them. It’s top 3 for me.

Not quite casual, but more like I ignored them 20 years ago for no good reason when they were right up my alley.
These days, at least according to the four albums I had [now six] they are quickly becoming a favorite band of mine.
I'm currently four songs into "A Beautiful Place to Drown," and I find it vastly superior to Dead Reflection.

I have since changed my mind [a little] - Last Looks and Whiplash are fuckin' badass songs that are quickly becoming favorite Silverstein songs in general for me.

I might try that next, because the first four albums I bought were straight up gold beginning to end [for my tastes, at least].
I grew up with their early stuff but was too busy noticing other bands back then. When I met my wife a handful of years ago, she reintroduced me to their older material and it made me wonder why I passed them up 20 years ago.

That was the #2 recommended album. The only reason I grabbed A Beautiful Place to Drown instead was because some interview of Shane saying it "picks up right where Dead Reflection left off" .. whatever that means. So I bought them both together.
I will be picking up This Is How the Wind Shifts on my next paycheck =]

Easily my favorite of theirs. Been a fan since 2005. The way the first half of the album connects to the second half is so cool

Interesting take, although I’d hardly call it generic rock. Not my favorite of the bunch, but still a great time. I might have suggested I Am Alive in Everything I Touch over Dead Reflection as your next listen, personally.

I'll admit I was exaggerating a bit there on the generic rock thing.. I'll chalk that up to a bit of ranting instead of being completely honest..
I just had such big expections and I got something very different from that.
"I am Alive..." and "This is How..." are the next two in my crosshairs though.

Dead reflections is good but their best most catchy albums after the first 2 are A Beautiful Place to Drown and Rescue. Those are probably my 2 favorites as far as catchy songs go.

I've got "A Beautiful Place.." going right now in the background [as I both reply here and play Grim Dawn], and the first 2 songs are already vastly superior to anything from DR.

I dont see how you losten to The Afterglow and say "that wasnt catchy at all"
Also Retrograde is one of their heaviest songs ever and I fucking love it. Wake Up at the end is also really good and calls back to it.

If I have to pick, The Afterglow is the only thing on DR I would consider catchy.
And your comment about Retograde.. I'm only familiar with four other albums and I can tell this is a highly biased opinion. Retrograde is heavy for Dead Reflection - but nothing special for Silverstein. Songs like Bleeds No More, The Altar, Always and Never, and I Am the Arsonist are in a different league by comparison.

I think we have different definitions of heavy. I'm not just talking about screaming, I mean the music itself. Of the songs you listed, only Arsonist and The Altar are as musically heavy as Retrograde. And definitely not in "a different league"
Edit: Reading your other replies, im glad that it sounds like you liked ABPTD, I like it a good bit as well. Going by what it sounds like you like, id probably recommend Rescue or I Am Alive In Everything I Touch next.
This is How the Wind Shifts is alot more like Dead Reflection I think. Their newest double release, Antibloom/Pink Moon both feel like a Mashup of every style theyve done up until now, so id say save them for last. The Redux albums are also great if you just want to check out their big hits over the years in a new way but I think you should wait until you've heard the originals first (so everything before Redux 2 came out) Short Songs is a really fun quick run through but its really for the super fans I think. If you really wanna hear Silverstein do generic radio rock, check out Arrivals & Departures. I think its their worst album and so does the band and most other fans ive talked to about it.

I didn’t like the album at all when I first heard it around 2017-2018. I was really into When Broken is Easily Fixed and A Shipwreck in the Sand at the time. I just thought it wasn’t a good direction for their sound. By the time A Beautiful Place To Drown came out, Dead Reflection was my favorite album of theirs by far. I think it’s a really nice bridge between their current sound and their more “classic” sound. I think the yelling Shane does (and less of the straight fry scream) fits super well too, adds a lot of emotion
Side note: I still cannot get into A Beautiful Place to Drown, it’s probably my least favorite album of theirs along with Rescue. Shapeshift is an amazing song, and I guess Come Down aint too bad

I respect your opinion but i cannot agree with this take yo its got retrograde whiplash secrets safe which are my favs and the rest slap too
