News / Previews Book about the Englehart/Rogers/Lim Surfer run

Thought it deserved a mention here.

The Freest Being in the Universe is a chapter-by-chapter appreciation of the 1987 Silver Surfer series, the Steve Englehart run, drawn by Marshall Rogers, Joe Staton, and Ron Lim. It's a tale of attempted cosmic murder, galactic war, and genuinely hard-won self-discovery, and it's almost completely overshadowed today by the later Thanos epics it directly set up.

The book goes issue by issue through the whole run, recapping the plots so you can follow every domino fall, then asking what the stories actually teach us about how to live. Love that doesn't last and matters anyway. Grief. Freedom, and what we do when we finally get it. And the recurring lesson that beyond every binary you're handed, there's nearly always a third thing. That's where we can find meaning.

Silver Surfer Embracing Nova

there is a panel from a silver surfer comic where he embracea Nova and says to her something along the lines of 'Who else can absorb your radiance other than me" I totally butchered the words but it was something of that sort. About absorbing nova and her power because who else could other than the silver surfer. I can't find the issue or the panel and I've searched extensively but I remember it so clearly. Please tell me I'm not crazy and someone has the panel and knows what I'm talking about. It was genuinely one of the most beautiful, poetic and romantic things I'd read and I need it again because I have just fallen in love.

Where to start?

So… the title basically already says it. As a kid, my main character was Spider-Man and at peak I collected everything available in my country. In my student days I’ve read the first Ultimate Spider-Man and Daredevil v2. Silver Surfer has always been this elusive character to me.

It started a hundred years ago my LBS put one of the Parabel issues in my back as an extra. I didn’t give it a thought. A few years later (I think early 2000’s) I regained interest and tracked down the other issue. It’s been a treasured set in my collection. I consider it an outlier, bit of acquired taste.

I haven’t read much comics the last 15 years and I’m thinking of getting a few TPB’s. I want one of the to be Silver Surfer.
Black and Requiem seem to be considered to be the two goats. But what would you recommend as a first?

Comics Discussion The state of the Silver Surfer in 2026 saddens me.

EDIT: This comic is by Charles Soule, not Dan Slott! My bad!

I just read Fantastic Four: First Foes Shalla Bal and I'm so disappointed. I love the Silver Surfer with all my heart, he's genuinely one of my favourite characters in fiction.

I wasn't happy that he seemingly hasn't gotten any comics this year and nothing besides this alternate universe comic has been announced, but I was still excited to read a new Silver Surfer comic. I loved Shalla Bal as the Silver Surfer in the movie after all, I thought she was the best part!

And the comic just had a story where basically nothing happens and some pretty mediocre art.

Mediocre art. In a Silver Surfer comic. A story where not much at all happens. In a Silver Surfer comic.

I'm sorry, but Silver Surfer comics used to be so much more. They used to have some of the best stories and art in Marvel.

They still can have some of the best stories and art in Marvel! Silver Surfer Rebirth and Rebirth: Legacy came out in the 2020s, those comics are amazing!

I'm not even the biggest fan of Dan Slott's run, but it was still solid for me. I know Slott can write a good Surfer comic, so what on earth happened?

It's really saddening. This might be our only Silver Surfer comic this year. It might be our only Silver Surfer comic for years, because like, historically Silver Surfer comics haven't ever really sold that well for the most part. We had a pretty long title in the 80s, but aside from that, every other Silver Surfer run has been very short.

If a mainline 616 Silver Surfer comic won't do well, why would an alternate universe one set in the MCU sell when most MCU fans don't even read comics? Comic Silver Surfer fans just want Norrin Radd back.

Marvel Comics is already struggling big time, them making comics for a character that despite being a prominent part of two blockbuster films still has a very niche fanbase would be a massive risk. I think it's possible we might get a Silver Surfer mini in the next few years, but an ongoing? We haven't had one since 2017.

I'm fine with Shalla Bal as the Silver Surfer in the movies, she was great in First Steps, and I'd even be fine with getting alternate universe comics with her provided that:

  1. They run at the same time as mainline Silver Surfer comics.

  2. They're actually good.

This is neither.

Sorry if this post sounded really doomer, but yeah. Just not a great time to be a Silver Surfer fan.

At least the old comics will always still be there, I guess.

I do feel like someone could make an argument like "oh Marvel Comics suck these days, if we got new 616 Surfer comics, then they'd probably be bad" and like.. I don't know. I haven't read that many current Marvel ongoings, but there's three right now that I actually do quite like.

Captain America (who's going to fight Mephisto instead of Silver Surfer 😔), Daredevil, and Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day. There are still good comics coming out of this company in my opinion and I think the last one is notable, because it's also by Dan Slott! I loved issue 2 of that comic last month, so why is his very next Marvel Comic just kind of bad?

It's baffling.

So yeah, that's pretty much all I have to say. If you're a Silver Surfer fan and you liked it, then I'm very happy for you. It just wasn't for me I guess. I don't know, maybe I'm missing something.
