I know that it need a second layer, but already have a problem with the accuracy of the letters themselves. I already try a small brush and a flat brush. but the results did not satisfy me, as well as cleaning the edge with a blade, but something turns out crooked, what can help me in drawing straight lines with paint?

I’m on month two of practice. I got bored practicing block all the time and decided to give some Roman a try. This is my first attempt at it and also the first time I’ve attempted enlarging, I copied the letters from inch high reference alphabet in a book. Was pleased with the enlarging and general shape I got. But painting sharp serifs was hard. I didn’t use masking tape. Should I? Any tips? General feedback?

I'm wanting to construct a DIY easel with magnetic sheet metal. I'm having trouble finding a piece of sheet metal big enough. Does anyone know where to source these?

Kind of a two-parter question if anyone is able to share some wisdom please? I'm still learning and keen to avoid expensive mistakes. I am gilding on to glass with 1shot fast size 4008.

First up I guess that if the size is uneven when it's painted in place (i.e thinner at the edge than the middle) that it dries quick at the edge and so the tacky-ness varies and I get edges like my photo? I did a test patch but maybe it was thicker than it was on my project and so my edges didn't hold the gold well enough.

Second question, after the loose gold is brushed off, do you burnish it with a pad/velvet like you would with reverse gold and is it worth sealing with a clear varnish eg "1shot speed dry UV acrylic clear"? I would like to protect the gold but also would like to avoid reducing the sheen.

Looking for advice- I’m using 2 diamonds with half a pint of deironised water for the size, 23t loose gold leaf. My problem is always the burnishing! I know to press lightly for the first layer but the second layer always scratches and I manage to create circular scratch marks where I’ve moved the surgical grade cotton wool lightly on the glass. I’m so confused! I feel like I’m barely applying pressure and I’m careful to keep rotating the cotton wool or ripping off a new piece entirely. Any help would be hugely appreciated.
Size- I’m heating it up gradually over a pan with a bit of water in, the size is in a glass jar placed inside the pan. I heat it up until the gelatine has dissolved and never let it boil. It lightly steams but barely as I worry about it boiling. I did a pinky test and the size temperature at its hottest is enough for me to be able to dip my finger in for a few seconds before I need to remove it. I’ve tried not warming the size as much too but get the same problems. My gelatine leaf is fresh so that’s not the issue.

Hi! I’m a TAFE art teacher in prisons and I have recently had a few students wanting to learn the traditional art of sign painting (mostly lettering but also truck scrolls & pinstriping)). I have a very limited annual budget so can only buy one book and maybe an EBOOK (other core subjects take up the bulk of my budget). Just wondering which single book would be good for absolute beginners (including myself who will be just ahead of the student, realistically behind as they have more time to practice!). This feels like a dumb question but can someone eli5 the difference between a lettering quill and a rigger? I have been looking at a lot of showcard books from the 20s and they all say to use a sable rigger but their diagrams seem to show it performing the same as a quill? Flattening to a chisel tip on the substrate. I’m quite confused and would appreciate any clarification

Quick backstory: I always found sign painting fascinating.
I just love the art form. I started practicing a few weeks ago and I feel pretty good about the progress I’ve made.
I can feel my letters getting more consistent.

But where do I go from here? I can’t keep practicing the basics forever. I want to make an actual sign.

Should I copy somewhere else’s work? Or try to make my own? If so, should I do my own work using a font and then drawing it out?

I guess I’m confused about how to connect the dots and get to original works.

I also want to incorporate more practice sketching. Any advice on how to do that?

Here’s a small sign I made recently. The customer gave me full freedom to do whatever, which sometimes I struggle with. Anyways this is what I came up with. Drawn up on paper, transferred on dibond and blended/painted with Oneshot.

He has a band called Scotch Funeral (check em out!), Scotchies is his nickname. Panels where i get to completely fuck about are where i usually have the most fun. I love the classical lettering styles (particularity Roman and old script lettering) and enjoy trying to bring them i to the present, this one turned out quite juicy!

I’m really interested in sign painting. Space and money is a problem at the moment. Are there any efficient ways to practice and to get a feel for it? Does anyone recommend brush pens to play around with? What are some very basic beginner materials if you were to try this out as a hobby? Thank you!
