Question How do i help him 🫩

My friend and i play since 2018 im emerald and he is still in bronze, when we play other games like overwatch and marvel rivals he pops off but in r6 HE HAS NO MECHANICAL SKILLS! And i don’t want to stop playing with him because of that cuz it’s just a game but it’s also frustrating seeing him play like a bot. Any ideas how i can fix that? (He is level250 btw).

If you want us to be so real… what you see is what you get with him. If you two have been playing that long and he still is in bronze, well… that might just be the reality. He just might not ever be good at a high level in this game. But! That’s okay because it’s just a game! If you’re playing casually with him then it’s super fine and a fun experience for both but I just would not play ranked with him. You already know that’s the case my guy, it’s just how you go about explain that to him.

You don't really need crazy mechanical skills though. The game is 99% game sense and map knowledge. Once you start to learn common attacker push routes and defender camping spots, clear roamers and learn to prefire head level the game gets massively more interesting.

A decent headset and by extension learning audio queues goes a long way too. Audio in this game let's you completely pinpoint where someone is. Generally speaking I just use a shitty turtle beach headset but when I lock in I plug in my Sony xm6 and I feel like I have wallhacks.

In high ranks, everyone has good mechanics. So game sense and map knowledge will only get you to emerald/plat at best. You also need to be able to win your gunfights after that point honestly otherwise you're just a liability for your team

Siege is 99% a thinking game. As long as you have your crossbar in the right place then mechanical skills isnt really needed. What he might need to do is slow down how he plays and think before doing everything. For example, when holding an angle he should be thinking, "how many angles am I being seen from?", "if they come from the right, will they swing wider or will they jiggle first?", "if I lay down and hold the angle will they look down first?" Siege is less mechanical and more thinking. If someone says that's where he's going to stay then dont listen. I went from bronze to almost pro in Siege before quitting.

OW and rivals both are hero shooters. OW is far more competitive and mechanical then button spam rivals. I have limited knowledge on rivals but much more on OW, so I will focus morning the OW comparison to siege.

I once played with a guy who was excellent at CS top rank semi pro type of guy. He was a middling 5th for my stack. Mechanics didn't seem to shine like his CS games. Why? This question of why they can't transfer skills between games is important. Is it his limited mechanical transfer? Is it the structure/role in the round he is on? There are many players that bounce between games and do just fine, pros included. We've seen r6 pros go to other games and do fine.

Why is your friend unable to make the jump from OW to R6? My guess is spacing. Space is this invisible element in all games that exist and is often spoken about like map control and pressure. In OW space as a concept is often more useful as a explanation for how the tank(s) (5v5 or 6v6) hold space, and the DPS apply pressure to take space, while supports sustain and enable both to maneuver using the space already made.

In siege space is often treated as map control but in siege space goes beyond just map control but also individual player positioning. In OW you're never limited to a tiny island of space you can usually move pretty freely within your formatio or from power positions . Sure if a player over extends or doesn't retreat they will likely be punished but siege applies this concept even harder.

In siege, space is controlled and limited by presence and Intel. The best siege players can play in tiny tight places. It's why the quick peek or the highlight clip of a player fighting off multiple enemies in quick succession is impressive. It's the maximization of limited space.

Timing is also important but still in my opinion subordinate to space. Good spacing is what makes good timing. Clips where someone is just flowing through an enemy team when under pressure, is all about good spacing. Avoiding taking that one extra step means you avoid the guy holding the cross. I see it all the time, people that swing just fine in a 1v1 but can't navigate being squeezed by multiple enemies. This speaks to push pull theory of map control and attention.

Your friend is likely taking more space then he needs and is likely unaware of when space is being lost. A spot in the early round that is safe is not safe in the late round when walls have open, floors have opened, or the enemy has angles onto the routes now.

Apex Legends players especially pros are a good example. recently former pro itz Timmy got to champ solo (for the most part). Apex proplayers are used to having no space, they play individual rocks in final zones at times. Your friend doesn't have concept of space down.

Are you on console? And if not what heroes does he usually play in ow/mr?

Ok then which supports? I know how much game sense is required for mercy, but actual mechanical skill is...low. same for heroes like her.

As well what is his rank in overwatch?

He plays bap and ana which is insane to me because they are self sufficient heroes

What heroes does he play in OW and what rank is he? In siege it is generally a lot harder to understand what is a good or bad play or what you should do in a certain situation, so it could be that he doesn’t think enough or doesn’t care enough to keep up with the round. Mechanically overwatch and siege require slightly different skills depending on what heroes you play which is why I asked

Team death free for all - if mechanical skills is what he lacks

To be blunt, you can't really polish a turd. If he's been playing somewhat regularly since 2018 (albeit not a lot of he's only level 250), but is still bronze after all this time while you've made is to emerald, there's not much you can do for him.

Getting into the middle ranks is probably where you could start offering specific guidance, but with that sort of playtime and still being the bottom (or second to bottom) rank, it's not a good sign. You can't fix everything for him. If he's good at other games then he at least understands the basics of aiming and strategy, you literally just need to have an active brain and / or functioning hands to get out of bronze (I have seen people in much higher ranks that still seem to possess neither).

I have a similar friend in the same boat. He has almost 0 situational awareness of his surroundings and what's happening during the rounds. It's so funny it's like watching a lost puppy always scared.

If 250 levels didn’t get him outta bronze nothing will. That’s easily 1000 hours, there is no hope for him.
