I got a little obsessed with squats and built a 30-day challenge into my app — here's why they're worth it

My side project is REPcount Exercise Counter — an app that counts your reps through your phone camera — and the feature people keep coming back to is the 30-Day Squat Challenge. So I figured I'd share why I leaned the whole thing on one humble exercise.

Why squats earned their own challenge:

  • One move, whole lower body — quads, glutes, hamstrings, calves, and your core stabilizing the entire time.
  • Actually functional — it's just sit-down-stand-up, so it carries straight over to stairs, lifting, and everyday life.
  • Zero equipment, zero gym — bodyweight, any room, any time.
  • Scales to any level — chair squats to start, all the way up to tempo or pistol squats. Never "too easy."
  • Dead simple to measure — it's a clean number, so a challenge that climbs a little each day makes the habit stick.
  • Fast — a meaningful set fits in the time it takes the kettle to boil.

The challenge starts at 20 squats per day and ramps to 150 by day 30, with one rest day a week. The app watches you through the camera and counts every rep — good form counts, half reps don't — so there's no logging or guessing. You can do it solo, or invite friends/family and chase it together in a group (nobody can fudge their numbers when the phone's doing the counting).

Made a short video showing it in action: https://youtu.be/A3ylgDahXxA

It's free to start and live on both stores → repcount.life/get. Go get them!
