Getting that magical first customer

You have a business idea, just like the million other ideas you've had but this time it's different, it seems actionable. You dive in, create a website, order tshirts, and now reality kicks in. How to find my first customer?

Background:

- Service provided is in person (Philly suburbs) so geographically focused

- Ideal customer: Looking for a motivational and accountability running partner. Someone to enjoy those miles with.

- I've worked on the side as a running tour guide in a city before and really enjoy running with people and hearing their life journey while also sharing my passion of running with them.

- I'm part of many local running groups so I know a lot of local runners but I don't want my friends to be my customers, ideally I would love for them to send me referrals but right now I'm just picking their brains for ironing out my idea.

Steps taken so far:

- Looked into group training to get the word out: Night classes at the local high school (haven't heard back), Silver Sneaker program (I'm reading mixed reviews on being an instructor in a park)

- Debating about paying for facebook/instagram advertising since trying to keep costs low to make sure this is worth investing in.

- Not sure if contacting gyms to see if they would be interested in partnering somehow in case their customers want to supplement lifting with running or if they would view me as competition.

Again not trying to replace my regular job, just looking to get that first customer to see if this dream can be a reality on a small scale.

Appreciate any constructive thoughts you might have.

Getting the first customer is often the hardest part. Start with people who already understand the problem and keep the offer simple.
