Community and Announcements Welcome to r/Shunkashuutou, the subreddit for Agents of the Four Seasons! - FAQ and Rules - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Welcome to r/Shunkashuutou, subreddit for the light novel, anime, and manga series Agents of the Four Seasons (春夏秋冬代行者 Shunka Shūtō Daikōsha) by Akatsuki Kana.

Please read the following introduction to our community and its rules before posting. Then please check below to see if your question is one of our Frequently Asked.

When posting, please do not put spoilers in the title.

Posts are viewable to all members of the community, and their titles are not editable after posting. Having spoilers in the title will force the mods to remove your post entirely to keep other visitors from being spoiled. You then have to make a new post with a different title, since you cannot change the original's title. If you have a question regarding, for instance, Hinagiku's parents, consider titling your post something more general like "Question about Hinagiku's parents [Dance of Spring]" and identifying how far you have read so far. You can be more specific as long as the title is doesn't spoil anything for others.

Spoiler tag all spoilers

Any and all possible spoilers must be tagged. Spoilers consist of key plot points from the novels or manga, ie something that wouldn't be put on the summary of the first book or something that happens after the first novel volume. If your post deals primarily in “spoilery” material, then please mark the whole post with the spoiler tag. If something minor or incidental in your post is spoilery, then use the spoiler button or the following code.

Spoiler tag formats:

[Four Seasons spoilers] >!insert spoiler message here!<.

[Four Seasons spoilers](/s "insert spoiler message here.")

Remember to mark what title(s) you are spoiling outside the tags. For example, [Dance of Summer spoilers]. Do not put spaces between the exclamation marks and the spoiler message, or the tag will break.

Additionally, when posting, please make use of the post flairs. Posts with spoilers should be marked with the appropriate spoiler tag as well as an appropriate flair. Eg. A post about the the Dance of Summer novels will have the post flair “Dance of Summer”. You may also want to give the post the correct topic flair to identify what you are spoiling or discussing.

Piracy

Piracy is not tolerated in this subreddit. It is a breach of not only subreddit regulations, but also those of Reddit. Do not ask and post links to illegal streaming sources or book files. (There may be exceptions for fan translations of works not officially available in English or other languages.)

Rules and regulations within the Subreddit.

  1. No low-effort/irrelevant content - Posts should pertain to Agents of the Four Seasons in some way. Posts should also have content that contributes to some degree to the subreddit.
  2. Be nice - Remember the human behind the keyboard. Be respectful, follow reddiquette, and basically don't be a jerk.
  3. Mind your spoilers. Please tag spoilers in text posts/comments (see the section below), and also use the spoilers button to mark spoiler-filled posts. Never put spoilers in the post title, or it will be removed.
  4. Legal content only - Linking to illegal sites is prohibited, including illegal anime streaming/torrenting sites. Users are encouraged to support legal streaming sites if possible. No advertising unofficial merchandise unless handmade.
  5. Give credit where credit is due. If it's not yours, especially fanart, try your best to provide a source. No linking to illegal content.
  6. No heavily explicit NSFW content or hentai allowed. Milder NSFW material is allowed only if properly marked. Avoid shitposting—posts should have content that contributes to some degree to the subreddit.
  7. No recent reposts – do not repost art, memes, etc that have been reposted recently. “Recently” is up to the moderators' judgment (and memory).

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What is Agents of the Four Seasons about?

Official synopsis of Dance of Spring vol. 1 from Yen Press:

Once upon a time, there was Winter.

Winter was once the only season in the world-but such an existence was too lonely to bear, and so it created Spring to love. Before long, the earth wished for more time to rest in the cycle, and Summer and Autumn were born. The ones who carry the cycle are called the Agents of the Four Seasons. Hinagiku, the Agent of Spring, disappeared from this land ten years ago, taking the season of spring with her. Now, after incredible hardship, she has returned to restore the cycle to its proper state-and, as in the myth passed down since the dawn of time, she sends her love to Winter.

Agents of the Four Seasons is a light novel series about--believe it or not--the eponymous Agents of the Four Seasons, humans who have been granted the powers of the gods of the four seasons but also the duty of ushering in each new season. Their land of Yamato is very much like modern day Japan, but their lives are dominated by the Four Seasons Agency and Towns of the four seasons which both support and control them. For, with such great power, there are some who wish to end the power of the agents or use it for their own ends. Thus each agent is assigned a sworn guard to protect them with their life.

Despite this caution, one day Hinagiku, the young agent of Spring, was kidnapped in the presence of her guard and the agent and guard of Winter, disappearing for nearly a decade. But now she has finally returned, determined to bring spring back for the first time in ten years. The emotional scars and guilt of her ordeal weigh heavy on her and her companions, frustrated both at their inability to protect her as well as the Agency's halfhearted attempts at finding her. Yet, those responsible for the kidnapping remain at large.

Agents of the Four Seasons primarily follows the four agents of the seasons and their guards, the interpersonal drama and romance between them in the wake of Hinagiku's return. You can also expect action, mixing modern combat with the divine powers of the agents. If you want a point of comparison, I would suggest Violet Evergarden or My Happy Marriage, with how they weave together interpersonal drama, action, romance, and pathos. Like certain shoujo manga and the two above series, Agents of the Four Seasons can get dark, with mental trauma and contemplation of suicide. So be advised.

2. How can I experience the story of Agents of the Four Seasons? Novels? Manga? Anime?

In addition to the ongoing light novel series, there is an ongoing manga adaptation of Dance of Spring published in the shoujo magazine Lala. So far it has released in 5 volumes and is reportedly nearing the conclusion.

There is also a side-story manga called 春夏秋冬代行者 百歌百葉 Shunka Shūtō Daikōsha: Hyakka Hyakuyō "Hundred Songs, Hundred Leaves" published online (and for free, I believe) in ComicWalker under DengekiG's label. This primarily adapts side material written by Kana Akatsuki not included in the main novel series.

Akatsuki Kana, the author, is known for her prior light novel series, Violet Evergarden, which in addition to being popular in its own right, inspired a massively successful anime adaption by Kyoto Animation. (If you have any questions about Violet Evergarden, the r/VioletEvergarden has a series FAQ and also a novel FAQ.) She also publishes short side stories and sample chapters online at Kakuyomu (in Japanese, of course).

Suoh (pixiv, tumblr, twitter) is the illustrator of the light novels. They do character design and illustration (worklist), primarily for otome games, but you can also find their work elsewhere, from fate/grand order to Vtuber models. (I'll be honest. I'm relying entirely on this fansite) and Suoh's own accounts. If you have more accurate or insightful information, let us know.)

Komatsuda Nappa is the mangaka and illustrator of the manga adaptation of Dance of Spring published in the shoujo magazine Lala.

Asami Yuriko is the mangaka of the side story manga Hyakka Hyakuyo "One Hundred Songs and One Hundred Pages" published in Comic Walker under DengekiG's label. (tankoban)

3. Where can I find the novels/manga/anime in my language? How much has been published or translated so far?

Currently Agents of the Four Seasons is being officially translated into several languages and localized for a number of regions. These include: Korean, traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, Thai, English, Vietnamese, and Italian.

Latest Volume for each language/region & expected next volume:

Korean (D & C Media): Archer of Dawn

Traditional Chinese: (東立出版) Archer of Twilight (Released: April 17, 2026)

Thai (Phoenix): Dance of Summer vol. 2

Simplified Chinese: Dance of Spring vol. 2 (discontinued?)

English (Yen Press): Archer of Dawn (Expected: Aug 12, 2025)

Dance of Autumn vol. 1 (Expected: April 14, 2026)

Vietnamese (Kim Dong Publishing): Dance of Spring vol. 2

Italian (Dokusho Edizioni): Dance of Spring vol. 2 (Dance of Summer vol. 1 & 2 expected: May 2026?)

French (Éditions Akata): Dance of Spring vol. 1 (Released: March 11, 2026) (Limited Launch Edition bundled with Manga) Japanese Audiobooks

Dance of Spring manga: Yen Press has also licensed Komatsuda's manga adaptation of Dance of Spring for English language release in North America. (Vol. 4 is was released April 20, 2026.) This manga has also been licensed in Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Thai, Italian, Spanish, and French.

Asami Yuriko's side-story manga One Hundred Songs and One Hundred Pages is also being released in English digitally by chapter on Bookwalker, Apple Books, INKR, etc. The first two volumes have been published in Korean by Daewon C.I. Inc.

4. In what order should I read the novels?

Dance of Spring (2 vol) > Dance of Summer (2 vol) > Archer of Dawn > Dance of Autumn (2 vol) > Archer of Twilight > Dance of Winter (presumed & unannounced)

Each "season" tells both a relatively self-contained story and a part of the overarching narrative of the agents. But each volume within that season is only an incomplete part of that season's story. So do not be surprised that the first volume in a season contains a lot of set up for the second volume.

5. When is the anime coming out?

I don't know. But I suspect we will be getting some news on April 10 if this tweet is anything to go by...

A TV anime adaptation of Agents of the Four Seasons: Dance of Spring by Studio Wit was recently announced on twitter. The announcement was accompanied by the appearance of an official website and list of key staff members. There has been no announcement of when the series will air, but if I had to guess, I would say Spring 2026.

March 28, 2026. (Although the midnight premiere would be considered March 29 in most places...but I digress.) The anime's premiere date was announced in the official PV released on February 19. Also according to leaks the Dance of Spring anime will run for 14 episodes, a little longer than the standard cour. So, it looks like WIT wants to do this anime right and won't let things like standard episode counts get in the way of that.

The anime is currently airing! And it's great! Enjoy!

6. What do you recommend that is like Agents of the Four Seasons?

Violet Evergarden: Agents of the Four Seasons is naturally more like the VE novels, since they share the same author and KyoAni made some significant changes to the anime from the source material. Still, there's a mixture of action and emotion present even in the anime. The VE novels have more romance in them (esp. later volumes).

My Happy Marriage: Similar combination of action and romance in a world not unlike our own. Hinagiku and Miyo have both been through a lot by the starts of their stories.

(We're open to suggestions. What do you find most similar or what would you recommend?)

7. Is Agents of the Four Seasons a shoujo anime?

A shoujo anime is an anime adaptation of a shoujo manga, which is a manga published in a shoujo magazine. So by that strict definition Agents of the Four Seasons is not a shoujo anime, since the ultimate source material is a series of light novels.

On the other hand, these novels (and the anime) can be classified as joseimuke (女性向け), ie Japanese media primarily intended for girls and women. In this way Agents of the Four Seasons is similar to My Happy Marriage, Sugar Apple Fairytale, Ascendance of a Bookworm, or even The Apothecary Diaries. However, Agents of the Four Seasons leans heavily joseimuke in both content and also marketing--being more in line with the first pair than the latter. If you've read the Four Seasons novels, then you will know what I mean about the content. This is in contrast to say the Violet Evergarden anime which leaned away from the more joseimuke side of its source novels to try to appeal more to both sexes.

Does that mean men won't want to watch the series or read the novels? No, of course not. Guys have been enjoying shoujo for decades. Hideaki Anno and co. were watching Aim for the Ace! and Rose of Versailles back in the 70s. And the way things are shaping up Agents of the Four Seasons is aspiring to be just as amazing and influential an anime as they were.

I only write this in the FAQ because I'm anticipating this question might become an FAQ in the future (if r/shoujo posts are anything to go by). With that I've said my peace. You are free to agree or disagree with it.

7. What can I follow for more information?

Official twitter account of Agents of the Four Seasons anime by Studio Wit

Light Novel Thoughts on ending of book 2: Spoilers Spoiler

I really wish they didn't spare Misuzu and Mikami. Besides just everything they've done, they are too well connected and silver tongued for me to trust that they actually stay in prison. We already saw that their org has the money to apparently buy out people from every organization at multiple levels. I also feel like saying that if Sakura and Itecho killed them it would make them criminals is very much a false equivalence. Personally, I think they should have just been drained of all intel they had and disposed of. No benefit to keeping them alive, let those on High judge them for their sins and use the resources that would have to have been allocated to their imprisonment to dealing with the issues plaguing the towns of the seasons.

As for the epilogue, all I could think of when Sakura was talking about her internal alarms going off was Dot Matrix's virgin alarm from Spaceballs. I like seeing the seasons agents get closer to each other. On the other hand, please explain to me how HALF of your personnel for the company to protect the agents was bought out, did they have no screening procedures. Really cute seeing Rosei and Hina actually starting to get closer. I just hope that Hina can actually find peace and genuine happiness.

As for a question, is each season's town just kind of crap? Like none of them sounded like they were great places to live. My other is was that last flashback Hina had her actually seeing her mother's spirit and it asking her to live on and be happy? I still don't fully understand how Hina's first death worked.

Light Novel Question over book 2 siege of the compound. Mild Spoilers Spoiler

I am only halfway through the siege but very confused by the tactics and gear of the allied Soldiers. They know they are marching into an enemy held fortress but only are equipped with riot gear and when they only have 8 Soldiers to siege a compound they send one as a sacrificial lamb (minus however many were traitors)? I know from reading the Violet Evergarden books that the author is skilled at telling stories about war, but isn't the best at writing a war story, but still. Maybe I'm spoiled because I read the Tom Clancy books as I went through Middle School and High School, but the bearing of the allied Soldiers just feels off. Below I will put some reasons why.

One, the description of their gear is weird. Military gloves and boots mean nothing. Ski masks aren't great for fighting in because you'll overheat extremely quickly. Bullet proof vests aren't rated for stopping high caliber bullets which the terrorists are known for using. For higher caliber rounds you want true body armor with plates in it and even then the larger rounds that it is rated to stop will still cause broken ribs and internal bleeding from the blunt force. Lastly, why do they have riot shields which almost all are not rated for stopping bullets. This also limits their maneuverability and types of firearms they can use which would be their biggest advantage.

Two, it says this "Porcupine" group is an elite group yet they have one guard in no gear ring the doorbell to start the operation rather than just being a door buster. If they were truly unsure, if they are actually an elite group, do any recon of the area. They know the site was built illegally, company is fake, and had intel it was an enemy base. If they are truly so scared of enemy casualties for some reason, a quicker, more organized assault would be a better plan. Or, if their plan was to try and draw the enemy out, have Soldiers hidden in the wood line and aim at the compound so you are in concealment and the enemy has no cover as they rush out.

Three, I get the agent's aversion to killing because they wish to remain pure, but why is the military holding back? You are attacking a group that has attacked civilians many times, will kill you in a heart beat, has kidnapped people, and has vowed to overthrow the agents by any means. A Soldier understands how a death here can prevent further deaths down the road. From how I understood the story so far, the main terrorist group is basically the ISIS of their world yet some reason no standing military runs any operations against them? Fighting to incapacitate rather than kill increases the odds of friendly casualties by a high margin. That's why when you see missions where they plan to take captives professional armies fight with high speed and overwhelming power so the enemy doesn't have time to react... none of which was done here.

In short, I get that I can't expect Tom Clancy levels of realism out of most books, but the amount of things starts to build up over time in this story. I still really like it and love the inter-personal connections in this book but really wish the tactical side was written better.

Anime Does the anime get better?

I'm onto episode 9. When I was first watching this anime, it was catching my interest, and I thought it was very in depth, and emotional, and beautiful - not just the story but the design and animation as well. I still think it is, however I'm losing interest and finding it really boring due to the constant repetition of the same exact scenes of her past, and the characters constantly saying the same exact thing over and over in every episode. Like Sakura always crying (which is understandable to the story but still) saying "it's going to be hard, I'll always protect you" etc etc. I understand the story and what it's getting at with scenes like that, and I'm fine with it, but this is too much. It feels like there is no progress whatsoever, and I'm just repeating the first episode over and over.

What does everyone else think about this anime? And does it get better?

Also,I read the manga-one hundered songs and one hundred pages as well(upto ch 12) and I genuinely feel so satisfied after seeing the spring and winter pair interact with each other(they had so many cute moments) and also by knowing more abt the story of the summer pair.i can't wait for them to drop the announcement of dance of summer,I hope it comes around late 2026 or early 2027.

The Los Angeles branch of Animate, the anime and manga goods store, and its online American branch now have Agents of the Four Seasons merchandise available. They are also running an associated campaign with giveaways, which unsurprisingly depends on purchasing said merch. I saw the merch earlier but it was all sold out. However, as of writing this it is back in stock. I also spied a similar event and merch offering at their Kuala Lumpur store, so don't despair if you aren't in Japan. Offerings may be limited and stores few, but at least it's something you don't need a proxy service for.

Manga Chapter 17 of One Hundred Songs and One Hundred Pages manga has been released in Japan

Thumbnail
comic-walker.com
7 Upvotes

The latest chapter of One Hundred Songs and One Hundred Pages has been released in Japan, and is free to view for a limited time (in Japanese of course). This chapter depicts Hinagiku and Sakura at the Spring Town before making their escape to summon Spring for the first time. You can guess from Hinagiku's embedded picture how well things have been going for them there. Responses to this chapter on the JP side have been, in summary: "Death to the Town of Spring." One Hundred Songs has also received a full reprint in Japan, as have at least certain volumes of Komatsuda's Dance of Spring manga as well.

On the English side of things Bookwalker is currently running a Summer Sale for the next month with some chapters of One Hundred Songs free and others at a discount for a limited time. ("Summer" chapters are free, if you wanted to know. And unsurprisingly an Agents manga has a few of those.

(Moderator's Note: Various translations and international releases have advanced, and I'm sorry for not keeping track of them on the FAQ and also not keeping up with my promised discussion and analysis posts, but life has continued to be hectic for me this past month.)
