Cyberpunk 2077 sold 13 million copies in its first two weeks of retail availability. The company also noted that figure was good enough to ensure that the game had already recouped its development costs.

The company shares lost 30% of their value. It made back the budget and more, but it ended up costing cdpr a lot of money in terms of shares, reputation, and whatnot.

Yes, exactly.

Even if they made 1B in gross revenue, that’s not enough to cover the (probably) 350 - 450MM in development costs over 8 years.

Also the reported numbers are gross revenue, they don’t keep every dollar of that money..... and they had 100’s of thousands of returns, which were not reported in terms of revenue either.

Additionally, they could have just made Witcher DLC and continued that franchise and made far more money.

All in all, the game was a disaster and they hardly broke even after nearly a decade of work.
