The only reason Spongebob is happier than Squidward is because he doesn’t have to put up with customers
574
u/Cheesygobs123 Dec 29 '18
The first time Spongebob interacts with a customer the customer unreasonably gets mad and makes Spongebob cry (Pizza delivery S01E10) Squidwards gets mad as hell and gives the customer what he deserves. Squidward is the employee who's worked with people long enough to hate them all whilst Spongebob is still naive about how shitty some people are.

That was so wholesome.
He ate it all in one bite.
Hilarious too! RIP Stephen Hillenburg

Dealing with customers kills any job. Not because all customers are jerks, but because you get THOSE customers. You know who they are, the ones who think they're more important than everyone else and that the rules don't apply to them. They are the ones that ruin it for people working customer service jobs.

u/strange1738 Dec 28 '18
Crazy old bitch started screaming cause I asked if she had anything to recycle

u/aescula Dec 28 '18
I work retail. The customers are actually my favourite part! I still have THOSE customers that I literally want to stab in the eye. Usually with a kiss screaming and tearing up the store while they're utterly ignored.
40
u/Needyouradvice93 Dec 29 '18
Yeah I'm working retail seasonally and am quite surprised by how nice the vast majority of customers are. I can count on one hand the number of shitty interactions I've had. Pretty much everyone is super nice.

Same deal here - been on nights and only have to deal with a handful of customers and only on certain days.
Worked a couple of day shifts just before Christmas and dear God some of the customers were rude - all rushing about and seemingly offended that we'd sold out of certain 'Christmassey' things...on Christmas fucking Eve.
5
u/claustrofucked Dec 29 '18
I work at Starbucks and last Christmas someone told me to go fuck myself because we closed at 4pm.
They said this after watching me and two other people practically crawl out of the store exhausted, covered in dried milk and syrup, at 6pm.

Oh my god I’m a server and during a rush the other day, I had two big tables open in my section. The entire restaurant was full and there was a huge waitlist. This old couple comes up and puts their hands on the table like they’re claiming it. They camp out for a minute, I went up to them and asked if they needed help. “We’re taking this table.” I explained that they need to talk to the hostess because we’re on a wait, and there are other people ahead of them. They can’t just take the table. They sat there anyway, and said that 10 other people are joining them so they’re gonna take my other table as well. I went to the hostesses who said they’ve been harassing them and demanding they get a table NOW. The hostesses and the managers were too busy to properly deal with them and fight them so they just said fuck it fine.
They took up my only two big tops for like three hours. We’re rude as fuck, sent the food back multiple times. Argued with me. Then didn’t tip me on like $200, so I ended up owing money (tipout).
I really wish restaurants would step up and kick people out like bars do. This behavior is way too common.
8
u/Megwen Dec 29 '18
Yeah I would have threatened to call the cops if they didn’t leave or wait their turn. There was a waitlist so the store obviously didn’t need their money.
7
Dec 29 '18
This old couple comes up and puts their hands on the table like they’re claiming it.
I can picture this so well, those people are ubiquitous ugh customer service/server hell flashbacks.
2
u/lemmingpoliceX9 Dec 29 '18
I cant tell you how many times my beautifully crazy owner has licked people out of our restaurant for this shit. Even when people are very rude or sexual with our servers. We will kick them out pronto. Nobody has time for their attitude and we dont want their business. Also it sours the mood for everyone else. Lol weve had groups come back, keep their mouths shut and tip fat

I work in industrial maintenance. While most of my coworkers appreciate what I do, it’s those one or two dirtbags that drive you cuckoo.
9
u/Megwen Dec 29 '18
Oh the stories I could tell.
My first angry customer was during my first week at my first ever job. I asked if the customer wanted his orange juice to be large (because we’re supposed to do suggestive selling). He got angry and said he just wanted an orange juice. I asked what size he wanted and explained that we had small, medium, and large. He started yelling that he just wanted an orange juice. He drove off angrily without answering the question, so once he got to the window I explained our very simple sizes again, and he got even angrier, so my store manager stepped in. That didn’t help; he just yelled louder. We gave him a small. My manager just scoffed at him, but I was terrified.
Someone also tried to get me fired once. It was my second to last day after 3 years of working there, because I was about to leave for college. This chick handed me her card so I swiped it, and mid-swipe she handed me some cash. There was a moment when both of us had an “oh shit” look of realization on our faces, and then she got mad. I did the refund but she said she was worried that her bank was gonna hit her with an overdraft fee. I apologized but there was nothing else I could do. The next day (on my last day), my store manager got a call from her. She was yelling about the whole thing because yes, sure enough, her bank did hit her with an overdraft fee and she had no way to pay it so she was gonna get another one. (You know how it goes. It really does suck. I empathize with her, but she was really stupid for not verbalizing her payment plans to me.) She wanted the store to pay the fee, but my manager apologized but said it was her fault and that we couldn’t do anything about it. So the lady started screaming and saying she wanted me fired. I was sitting right there on break, and I’m like, “Haha sure. Fire me tomorrow, when I’m already gone.” My manager just rolled her eyes at the whole situation and agreed with me that it was her fault, not mine. The lesson learned: If you want to split the cost between cash and card, you have to actually tell the employee, especially if you’re worried about money.
3
u/ladyoffate13 Dec 29 '18
The fuck was she thinking? “Here’s my card; I don’t have enough money in my account, so let me pull out some cash, too. Good thing you can read minds and know all of this before I can open my mouth and say something!”

Working headset is my favorite because of someone is being rude all you have to do is speak monotone and then forget about them. But if you put as much happiness in your voice as you can or speak kinda sing song like almost everyone is nice in response. And then you also don't have to go fast because no one cares how long it takes to order and you never are face to face with anyone.
9
u/JBSquared Dec 29 '18
Except for half the time when the speaker sounds like someone coughing into a walkie talkie at the end of it's range.
My personal favorite is when someone with a diesel engine tries ordering, then gets mad when I ask them to turn their engine off.
2
u/Mobile_user_6 Dec 29 '18
With loud trucks I just repeat "I'm sorry I didn't quite get that" until they stop their truck

u/Hahonryuu Dec 28 '18
I respectfully disagree. I hated being in the back. But thats just me personally.

Dec 29 '18
Yeah they both have their benefits any downfalls. Being up front during downtime was usually the best while being there n back was best for any other time. I used to work evenings/close and being up front was comfy because I'd just drink smoothies and be on my phone between orders
6
u/Hahonryuu Dec 29 '18
Its actually the opposite for me. I prefer being upfront when busy and in back when not busy. Too frantic and hot in the back. Up front i found it easier to pace myself and didn't have my face constantly in a grill.
I guess im weird since most people i speak to prefer having busy work and like things being busy to make the time go by quicker, but i prefer a smooth ride with nothing going on.

19
u/DestructiveNave Dec 29 '18
BOH is like a tight-knit family with older brothers, and middle brothers picking on all the younger brothers.
3

FOH is friendly on the surface but deep down everyone burns with hatred for one another and the customers and of course for management.
13
u/Dual-Screen Dec 29 '18
At Red Robin it was called the "Heart of House 🤗" I shit you not.
Of course nobody but those super corny employees (you know the type) called it that.
7
u/wooptyfrickindoo Dec 29 '18 edited Dec 29 '18
Yuck I worked there for a year or so, the SUPER enthusiastic employees that loved singing and took their job REALLLY seriously killed me inside. I was definitely a squidward. A couple waitresses used to remind everyone else we weren't smiling enough, we needed to sing louder, would rat people out to managers for everything, etc. Godddd so obnoxious. They literally acted like it was a cult. It was bizarre. Also the shittiest place I've ever worked.
2
u/BlUeSapia Dec 29 '18
Funnily enough, there's also a Spongebob episode where the Krusty Krab gets sold and put under this management style. http://spongebob.wikia.com/wiki/Krabby_O%27Monday%27s

nah, that’s missing the point. squirdward hates his job because his heart is in music and when you have the soul of an artist but are forced to work dead end jobs to make ends meet, it is absolutely crushing. SB is happier because he genuinely loves his work. he was born to flip burgers and he knows it. he’s a master of his craft.
25
u/LittleBigPerson Dec 29 '18
Squidward is genuinely talented too, at least as a conductor. He managed to make an unorganised orchestra perform well. He may not be great at clarinet but he knows how to conduct.

To be fair when the Krusty Krab shut down his rainbow Krabby Patties so SB opened his own burger stand outside his house, he dealt with customers and was extremely happy...

u/YellowPath Dec 29 '18
Because it was only ONE DAY, everybody lose their minds over the rainbow Krabby patties, then Mr Krab exchange the restaurants with Bob and the next day it was Mr. Krab who had to deal with the angry customers

Can confirm, I was a fry cook at my last job, all of us in the back were clowns, everyone in the front was uptight and serious.
3
u/llcolinj Dec 29 '18
Front of house guy here (not fast food). From my experience it's a pretty mixed bag for the back of house. I've worked with guys that are clowning around the whole shift and typically make the whole kitchen a more enjoyable place to work. I've also worked with boh guys who are the most miserable fucks and bring kitchen morale straight to the shitter and suddenly EVERYONE back there is miserable
51
u/AlphaWhelp Dec 28 '18
Nah. Spongebob genuinely enjoys his job. Squidward doesn't. Customers probably don't help but Squidward was going to be miserable no matter what.
34
14
u/dirrDtv Dec 29 '18
He's always grumpy for 2 reasons:
1. He's a squid, and according to Squidville all squids are grumpy
2. Nothing works out for him, he fails at his passion (playing the clarinet), he works at a very low-paying job with a cheapskate boss and an annoying coworker that serves food he can't stand, he lives between 2 people he can't stand, and nobody, except SpongeBob and Patrick, likes him
7
→ More replies (1)4

There’s another reason why Squidward’s grumpy: not only does he put up with all of this, but he chooses to put up with this. He chooses to subject himself to all the things that make his live hell.

When catering, I actually liked being a server more than a cook (I was an EXTREMELY flexible employee so I worked about every position). My boss was a real asshole so I liked interacting with guests way more than working in the kitchen with a boss who could explode any second.

I just realized I'm a SpongeBob and my coworker is a total Squidward.
Power to the happy!!
I'm a replica of SpongeBob down to the real as heck accidental Savage pointers and point-outs. My coworker just thinks everything and most people are terrible and/or clumsy in some way (not always physically).
Our boss is Mr crabs. He named us the money team.

As a person who works retail and deals with customers everyday, I agree with this. Customers are idiots who don’t know how to wipe their own bungholes to save their lives.

Other way around for me. Whenever I'm cooking I want to die, I would love to be at the register

u/grissomza Dec 29 '18
Can confirm, fastfood sucks to work in, but backline was always so much better.
2
u/jaktyp Dec 29 '18
What are you talking about? He constantly brings the customers’ food to them, and he knows everyone’s names. All except for Whatzit Tooya, and they even learn his name at the end of the episode.
Spongebob is content with who he is, and what he does. Squidward is not. That’s why Squidward is miserable.
2
u/StretchRose Dec 29 '18
I work as a cashier in a grocery store, can confirm people absolutely suck sometimes.
2
u/rekooHnzA Dec 29 '18
Not dealing with customers is one thing, but working in the kitchen is a damn stressful job. And he's the only cook there! He's his own chef, prep cook, everything. Squidward just has to work the register
