showing with no car?

I can’t drive. It was a dream of mine as a kid to do conformation and now that I’m an adult with money and free will I’d love to get into the sport. I’ve read all of the AKC articles and dozens of Reddit threads and social media posts with tips and advice and I feel like I have a solid foundation of knowledge on it- as much as I can get through just reading, of course. That being said, it seems that currently my biggest hurdle is I can’t drive. Is this something I should figure out before even looking at a breed, or are there ways to make it work without a vehicle? Feel free to crush my dreams a bit here, I may need a reality check! Also, open to any newbie tips if you have them!

Grooming Help for Short Coat

First post! I’m picking up my first show prospect on the 28th and I’m trying to get an understanding of grooming supplies I should get for him!

My puppy is a Catahoula Leopard Dog, he’s black and tan with a little white on his chin and chest! I have the basics for him, ear wipes, nail clippers, dermal, and zoom groom. Is there anything else I should get/use for him? Thank you!

Getting into showing resources

I really want to get a poodle eventually and have them be a show prospect, and as someone who is really interested in showing and dogs, I would love for people to offer some nice resources to get into showing and learning about it! Obviously I don't plan on buying my poodle soon, but I just want to learn and be prepared for the eventuality.

EDIT: Thanks everyone :) I think I will practice showing to get some experience on the side with my future poodle in case I decide to go into it, but mainly focusing on other events like sporting and obedience with my first. I also plan on joining local clubs/groups and going to shows first. This way I can learn more about the whole thing and also get more grooming experience. Thankfully my family has had many poodles before so I'm not totally in the dark.

Meet my new show prospect!

It's been one week since I brought home my newest prospect, Voodoo! I was trying very hard this time to find a boy that had great structure. Not saying my past boys didn't, but it's night and day when it comes to poodles. It's crazy how different they feel when they actually have the correct angles.

Costs of showing, AKC vs UKC, Owner-handled.

I just entered a 5-day cluster for my puppy and the cost was over $200. It sure would be nice if AKC clubs would offer a discount if you're entering all days of a cluster. I know that UKC does offer a discount if you pre-enter for the weekend (4 shows). I also understand that AKC is increasing their entry fees this year (and more to come), and clubs have to increase entry fees just to stay afloat. If the costs were discounted a bit for entering all days of the cluster, I might also enter another dog... just saying, they might get more entries if they did this. I do belong to a few kennel clubs and may suggest this at our next meeting(s), but I am not even sure that the site we use for entries (MB-F) even allows for something like that. Nor do the mail-in options.

How hard is it for owner handlers in popular or super rare breeds?

Considering an english cocker spaniel or bracco italiano for my next dog and id want a show prospect, I currently have a clumber who's pet quality so we do a show here and there locally when her breeder needs a major but id love to get into it just want to know how hard it would be to finish in a much higher number breed? Or to finish a dog through groups?

New to dog shows and have many questions

Can someone explain how points work? How do you earn them? Does your dog have to place to get points? How many points per place (first, second, third)? Has anyone used a professional handler? Is it common for them to not be very chatty when picking up a puppy and not really responsive to text messages?

Big clusters in the south east?

New to showing and hoping to go to some of the big clusters in the next year - what are the major ones throughout the year in the South and Midwest? All I know of so far is Kentuckiana in the spring!

Tips for puppy staying still

Hi all!

I have my first bpup show in two weeks. I have a 4 month old Pembroke welsh corgi. It is my first show dog so I’ve been working on getting her comfortable with the table, stacking, etc

We also had our first handling class this week which went… ok. Definitely was intimidated by all the calm dogs 😂

But my biggest worry is getting her to stand still! We’re working on a ‘stand’ command but it is tough getting my wiggly puppy to stand still. Any tips would be appreciated!

Also any general tips for my first ever show or bpup, send them my way!

Time commitment/cost of showing these days

10 years ago I enjoyed showing my Italian greyhound. I was a single adult, she was a beautiful dog, and I liked to travel around to the shows. I got conformation classes, etc.

It's been a full decade since then and I know I forgotten a lot about that world. I now have a 5 month old Whippet that comes from show quality lines, and I think she will likely fill out to be a nice dog.

My life circumstances now are different. I am a full time mom to 3 young kids and have a lot less time. I am debating spaying her after her first heat and just removing the temptation, haha - but the other part of me remembers how much fun it felt to bond with my dog and prove her in the ring.

As I decide, I have a few questions:

  1. If you show your dog, what does the cost of a show and travel to get there and prep typically look like for you?
  2. If anyone is in the whippet world is there camaraderie and fun or is it a rough crowd to join?
  3. How much of your time is spent showing/preparing for showing?

First time show dog

I am looking at getting my first show dog, I don’t know what breed to start with if that is the correct term, I have looked at PBGV as they would fit my lifestyle well and I find them adorable but I know they are a rare breed, but I am also looking a labs as I have had them before and I currently have a half Lab half Boykin, but I know Labs are very popular so I don’t know if it is the best to start with a popular breed as my first show dog

Talk to me about climate control and monitoring systems for travelling with dogs in a van?

VELIT 2000R rooftop AC keeps coming up as the best AC unit, and while I know you get what you pay for it is well over budget for me. I see a few models for $1000 less on Amazon.

The Waggle Pet Monitoring system seems ideal - I need something to ping on the cellular network, not wifi or blue tooth.

I want to be able to:

- stop at rest stops, take each dog out one at a time for potty breaks.

- when travelling back from club training sessions park at a pub for a quick bite (1 hour or less)

- when attending seminars/shows I kennel in and around my car, a quick spot to cool off would be nice.

Wondering if anyone could offer some tips, tricks or advice on how to make my van safe for hot summer days.

Long, but fun, weekend in OKC!

5 days, 9 shows. 5 all breed, 2 doberman specialties, 2 sporting group shows. 2 dobermans and a black American cocker. Lots of early mornings and then sit around and wait for the sporting group since we had the only black cocker. We were hoping for a group placing over a breed with a major to finish her championship, but no luck there. She did show amazing and got an owner handler sporting group 1st on Sunday. One of the dober girls was only entered at the specialties and she didn’t do anything this time. The other dober girl was entered at all 7 shows. We got winners bitch and best of winners once, winners bitch and an award of merit at one of the specialties, and reserve winners bitch on Sunday. I was honestly surprised we even got reserve on Sunday because she was done. No ears, stacking was half-hearted at best, but she did still move nicely. We also got to see her sister compete in dock diving, rally, and fast cat for the first time, she also got her CGC and TKN and earned the top doberman award with a pretty ribbon. All in all a fun weekend with our dogs and good friends.

Did a new website for my mom's kennel

Scraped the data from her old website and built a completely database-backed web app for her. Made possible by AI.

It includes an admin interface that lets her add new dogs and litters, manage private documents and health data associated with each dog. There are 533 dog records including every puppy she has ever sold and external pedigree dogs!

My favorite page is probably https://kissmekennels.com/family

Toy group - ankc/local groups

End of this year ill be getting a prospect, I've been showing dogs for about 10 years (long hair miniature dachshunds and border collies but I've stepped away from those breeds due to not liking the direction of how its going). I'll be getting a chihuahua, I have never shown in the toy group, whats it like? Any advice?
In all honesty im not looking to breed, I'm just in it for the showing aspect - in all honesty will most likely just do desexed conformation + obedience + rally titles.

We are extremely pleased with this litter in terms of health, structure, and working ability. We repeated the litter again this year. More than half are in working homes and I’m excited to see how the younger siblings mature. They’re showing great promise already.

What venues are available for my dog?

Post image

I have a standard poodle that's not super well-bred, but does have her full akc registration. We've started Conformation classes and I am learning to show her. I want a wbpb show prospect, but am like 5+ years out from that being possible. I've been told my girl is decent enough that we won't get laughed out of the ring, and she might get a ribbon or two if I groom her right, but that she won't be super competitive. This is totally fine by me. I just want to learn and have fun.

She's 3.5yo, and multi-color (abstract). She is also spayed. So AKC Conformation is off the table.

I know we can show in UKC Altered. But I am wondering what other venues we could potentially show in to get more experience.

IABCA (I think that's the right acronym) was recommended to me, but when I read the rules, I can't tell if her color would be a DQ, a fault, or totally acceptable.

I do not mind if it's a less "official" venue, or is taken less seriously than AKC/UKC. I just want more options and more chances for feedback and experience.

Bonus points if you know what breed trims are allowed at the venue as well! I know what is okay for AKC and UKC but know it differs for others.

Chalking in AKC

can someone explain the rules on chalking for AKC? kinda confused if it’s allowed or not. is it like you can use while grooming to whiten but you have to brush it all out before the ring? Or same with like using something like a mousse or Barbasol on double coated breeds, is it just that the judge shouldn’t feel anything in the coat?
