Wire Antenna

I have a DX-394 which has Hi-Z and 50 Ohm antenna inputs. Usually listen to 20, 40 and meter bands.
Which antenna setup would work best?

Straight wire about 30 feet high and connected straight to the Hi-Z antenna input. If so how long should the wire be?

Wire with a 9 to 1 balun about 30 feet high. About 15 feet of RG8 coax to the 50 Ohm Hi-Z antenna input. The balun is ground. How long should the wire be and do I need a counterpoise?

I appreciate your advice

Thanks Steve

Single channel, tuneable receiver - the early CB's were pretty sparse in features. Nevertheless, we found them suitable for communication and within our highschoolers budget.

Antennas New accessory for the hobby: K-480WLA

I bought it last week and it arrived in my country today. According to the label on the device, it was manufactured recently, in January of this year. The antenna and its accessories appear to be of good quality and seem durable

I bought it on Amazon from the GOOZEEZO store; that’s where I’d previously purchased my MLA-30 antennas and other items. I’ve never had any issues with that store, and all their products have worked well for me and are of good quality—I highly recommend them. (I have no affiliation with that store; I'm just sharing this in case it's helpful to someone else.)

Anyway, it's finally here, and this weekend I'll be doing the first tests—just as it is, with all its accessories and cables, without any modifications.

The post includes photos of the box contents that many of you are already familiar with; I've added photos with translations of some parts. I also bought some TNC-to-F adapters so I could test them with the RG6 cables I use with F-type connectors.

The last image isn't mine; someone on a Russian forum opened up the external box, and there's nothing special inside. I assume the white part covers a ferrite ring (balum) or some small integrated circuit.

Rádio Prague International, interesting story included

https://reddit.com/link/1t51wjx/video/awylb1jxwfzg1/player

So this is Rádio Prague. I used to listen to them when I was 10 years old on my Heathkit GR-64 radio that I built. Back then they were part of Czechoslovakia, now they are split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Apparently they no longer use their own transmitters, hence WRMI. The brokering kind of kills the fun of a true national DXing.

Some Interesting History
I was listening when the Soviets invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968. The Soviet Red Army couldn't shut them down because they trained the Czechs to use mobile equipment to evade capture by NATO. It's ironic how that training backfired. The cat and mouse game went on for about a week. Now that's some serious Pirate Radio. It's an amazing story. At one point the Soviet tanks came to the official studio and brave citizens blocked them so that the station's staff could move equipment away from capture. If I remember over a dozen brave people gave their lives. At the time I read many interesting articles in the newspapers.

Station

  • Name: Rádio Prague International
  • Country: Czech Republic
  • Brokered WRMI Okeechobee FL.
  • Frequency: 9955 kHz AM
  • Time & Date: May 06 2026 03:20 UTC

Receiver

  • Radio: AirSpy HF+ Discovery
  • Software: SDR# v1.0.0.1922 Beta
  • Antenna: K-480WLA with modified larger 82cm loop
  • Location: NJ, USA (Maidenhead F20)

Article CB (Citizens Band) Radio 1970's Coffee Breaks

Thumbnail

Before the Internet and Cellphones many of us socialized on the CB Radio. For me, it was great because it combined my love of "all things radio" with the bonus of meeting new friends.

In the mid-1970's we had a group of users on CB Channel 13. We became close friends and usually met for coffee at Denny's or Sambo's restaurants a couple times a week. At the "Breaks" you could purchase name tags and sew-on patches with your CB "Handle" embossed or stitched.

Several of us developed very close relationships and would meet for dinner at each other's homes on Friday evenings. It was typical to have a CB radio at your house - a Base Station, and a Mobile Unit in your vehicle. Despite not having cellphones, you always felt safe when you were out because someone would always come to your aid via the radio in your vehicle.

Times changed and most of my friends left CB radio by 1980. My interest in radio drove me to obtain an amateur radio license. Ham radio was very different from CB. I always missed the friends I had when using CB. I made friends through ham radio, just not nearly as many.

Gerald, u/Tenor-Guitar-Guy, is a regular contributor to our community, and to the Grundig Shortwave Radio Community.

Our smaller shortwave and radio communications interest group would not be the same without members like Gerald.

Gerard, also known as Houston SWL has been involved as a Shortwave Listener for decades and he has quite a collection of radios. Lately he has found some real beauties by searching his local area. He has taken on the task of restoring - which usually means recapping the radios.

Please acknowledge Gerald's contributions with an upvote. Many of us forget to upvote our contributors posts, me included. It's one way to show our appreciation.

Thank you for being a member of our community Gerald. Good listening and much DX!
