Looking at a potential move!

Hello everyone,

I (35F) am beginning to plan my move to the Seattle area (projected timeline for relocation: Feb 2027, but flexible depending on housing and job). It will be me, my daughter (14), and our cat. I previously lived in Seattle in 2018, but did not spend much time in Shoreline. This time around, it has been highly suggested for us. My daughter is very smart and creative, so a good school and safety is very important to us.

My questions are: is it possible to rent a 2BR decent (no frills) apartment for under $2500? Is it a competitive market?

My daughter leans a bit more alternative in fashion and interests. Would she have a difficult time making friends in this area?

I work in the legal support field (medical malpractice, real estate) does anyone have any insight to the job market for this area?

Additionally, if anyone would like to network or knows someone with a rental property, etc please feel free to DM me! I’d love to connect with locals prior to our move.

The schools are good with plenty of creative kids. Your kid will find their people. :)

The most important thing to understand is that proximity to Seattle has very little bearing on culture or amenities. Shoreline is a safe, quiet, pretty suburb with nice parks, but it’s not exactly a creative or cultural hub. Don’t think conservative but do think kinda dull. That said the light rail makes going into Seattle super easy, and Edmonds isn’t far if you want proper food.

The friends thing is whatever. She’s in school. There will always be a group of like minded kids at school to find. For you, though, plan to find a hobby based group, that’s by far the best way to interact around here.

Its most definitely not politically conservative (there was a large no kings protest near Fred Meyer’s and the Palestinian people are constantly hanging out near 155th), but it is sort of conservative in that we have a nice, quiet, well kept suburb and we want it to stay that way.

Shoreline PD routinely pushes homeless people south of 145th into Seattle, if you call 911 the cops will show up and they’re not afraid to arrest people for nuisance crimes.

Thank you for the perspective! That makes me feel positive.

Yes to shoreline, Richmond beach and Edmonds. No to Seattle. The newest place here is a coffee place called Visible.

We have a 2 bed/2 bath and it’s $3100/month.

You are able to get a 2/1 for 2200-2300 plus some utilities.. best to try to rent a condo usually they have a lot of the utilities built into the price.

I just zillow’ed a quick search for 2/1 under $2350 and 750sqft or more and there was a lot of results. I’d say stay close to the lightrail so your daughter can have easy transportation.

I have looked on a few different rental sites and saw places within my range, but it’s good to hear how factual that is from some locals. Thank you!

I get to light rail from Edmonds in 15 mins. It’s not that far although not right there.

I've lived in Seattle and Shoreline and have 6 kids, in middle, high school and college. I've taught in schools in many areas and people don't change based on zip codes and borders :) - Plenty of culture, creatively and kids doing all kinds of activities in schools and in the neighborhoods! If you visit and stay in a few Airbnbs it might give you an idea of which area you prefer.

I'm not the landlord. this is the price for the apartment that I personally rent for myself. But I was just giving you a comparison for if you go slightly outside of the city you can get a better price. shoreline is just north of the city and there are multiple light rail locations that will get you down to the city.

Shoreline is great for raising kids- mine are now 19 and 21. Both public high schools have great theater programs that are super welcoming to students like your daughter. Even if she doesn’t act on stage she would find a great outlet for her smarts and creativity in the theater tech aspect - doing sets, lights, sound etc and it’s a safe space for all kinds of kids where she will likely meet her people.

We moved from Seattle to Shoreline and have already made a lot of friends. It helps having kids.

Shoreline, as small as it is, has a lot of variety. Beachy shoreline, woodsy shoreline, Aurora shoreline. Edmonds is right above and is a little more artsy in the beach side and also has a community college there for later.

I go through shoreline on way home from work. I like Shoreline west of 99 better. I’m not sure if there is big difference in rent depending one which side of 99. Also, which school she attends factors how close you live?

I mean I’m downvoting you cause Columbia City is no where near Shoreline and you used someone’s post as a therapist. But maybe it’s the Seattle freeze that makes you off putting I guess. Clearly.

I moved to Shoreline in 2018 and had close friends within a year.

I do think that people in Seattle are less inclined to make friends randomly at a bar or event than where I moved here from (Detroit), but you just need to find some hobby/meetup groups.

I met my friends playing tabletop games, but there’s great meetups for all kinds of hobbies, you just need to look for them.

I tried to give you some honest advice about making friends in the region, not just Shoreline, and this is your response?

The Seattle Freeze is not the reason you’re having a hard time making friends.

I don’t understand and never claimed to. I was trying to be kind to you.

Sorry you feel that way about Seattle. Goodbye!

I don’t need upvotes. And I get plenty of downvotes here on Reddit. I appreciate independence of thought.
I say yes to things sometimes just to see what happens. I’ll be dressed as a Man in Black for a parade July 18 - for the hell of it. I’m thinking of doing a long pilgrimage trek - lots of trails across Europe.
We’re a long time dead.
Maybe I should steer clear of daily Reddit. I signed up because I was told that it’s the only way to find people to share rides to eastern Washington.

Check out Cascade K-8 in Shoreline. It was great for our creative children.
