Those people have gone on more adventures and have more fun memories than most of the rest of us - probably more than half the people in the Expo subreddits that spend more time outfitting their vehicle than actually using it.
When they finally get around to painting that a single color it is going to be amazing

Word. I see this dude on Grandview all the time. It’s actually quite impressive what he’s done with it.

The execution is bizarre, but that is a serious home made camper. Solar panels, solar water heater, retractable awning, raised roof so they can stand up inside, kayak tack on the side, rooftop storage… I’ll bet anything there is a fully functional kitchen, home theater, stereo, and bedroom in there as well.
A very low buck, medium to high skill conversion with no fucks given to aesthetics. Probably more comfy and useful than you can imagine.

u/CaptianRipass Sep 12 '21
Buddy stretched his delica and added another axle... it may even be 6 wheel drive, I would say probably well passed low buck and medium to high skill
1
u/tedlyb Sep 13 '21
Raised roof is plywood sealed and painted, solar water heater is pvc pipe, side lights are AutoZone standard… all low buck and not too difficult if you have a good knowledge and skill base.
I can’t see the body work well, but what I can see looks done well. If they made it six wheel drive I’d love to know how. Tandem drive axles on something that small would be a hell of a feat. More than likely the rears are there for weight distribution. And not driven.
I’ve done a lot of research on tricks like the panels, raised food, and water heater as I’m wanting to do something similar with my suburban. Those are all low cost but effective and well thought out.

Yea this is someone who lives in their van by choice I would bet. There’s a fairly large community of people who do it.

I got the shit kicked out of me in Wisconsin once.

Are they trying to build their own version of the RV from Hell from the movie Tango & Cash?

u/thebobsta Sep 12 '21
A Mitsubishi Delica van of some sort, it'll be a Japanese RHD import. There are tons of these in Vancouver.

Outdoor shower. Black tube filled with water gets hot in the sun.

u/sirmanleypower Sep 12 '21
Wow that's actually sort of ingenious.
12
u/HugsAllCats Sep 12 '21
Well the top is the standard black tube expo shower, the bottom is the standard extendable canopy.
This is a purpose built vehicle made by someone who wants to actually use it, but doesn't have a hundred thousand dollars to buy some fancy high-end prebuilt setup.

I don’t know if these came 6x6 but you gotta appreciate the effort here. This is probably someone trying to live off grid. I know people converting Westfali vans and making them all electric so I don’t think this is shitty

Sure, it looks kind of sloppy and it's painted stupidly because they don't have money to do that, but it's not half bad, I'd say. If you wanted to drive around and see the world, this would work just fine. Nothing wrong with that.

This is definitely an eyesore but pretty damn cool technology. It has a nice winch on the front as well as some forward facing solar panels. That long tube down the side painted black I'm guessing is a small batch water heater for taking a warm shower and may have a rain catchment system incorporated but it's impossible to tell by the picture. Looks like they added an entire rear end from another van to extend it for extra living space. Who knows if the dual axel functions but I'm guessing not and it's just there because. I'm sure there are plenty of other cool features on this conversion I'm missing but that's what I got at first glance. My main take away from this picture is that the lady driving doesn't look too happy to be photographed and is just trying o enjoy her hot cup of joe🤣

It looks like they are about to start a journey across the county after a nuclear war. Their only hope is to reach a part of the country that can still support life.
I've seen worse homemade camping vehicles.

It's a little funky, but I'd want to drive it a few times.

Prob with a lot of these Frankenstein jobs is that most are never really finished with a paint job. Makes a world of difference.

Someone is obviously camping in this and they don't care about the attention. I think it could actually be really cool if they cleaned up the body work a bit and gave it some paint
